    Nonlocal spectral properties of disordered alloys

    A general method is proposed for calculating a fully k-dependent, continuous, and causal spectral function A(k,E) within the recently introduced nonlocal version of the coherent-potential approximation (NLCPA). The method involves the combination of both periodic and anti-periodic solutions to the associated cluster problem and also leads to correct bulk quantities for small cluster sizes. We illustrate the method by investigating the Fermi surface of a two-dimensional alloy.     Investigation of the nonlocal coherent-potential approximation

    Recently the nonlocal coherent-potential approximation (NLCPA) has been introduced by Jarrell and Krishnamurthy for describing the electronic structure of substitutionally disordered systems. The NLCPA provides systematic corrections to the widely used coherent-potential approximation (CPA) whilst preserving the full symmetry of the underlying lattice. Here an analytical and systematic numerical study of the NLCPA is presented for a one-dimensional tight-binding model Hamiltonian, and comparisons with the embedded cluster method (ECM) and molecular coherent potential approximation (MCPA) are made.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    A Self-Consistent Marginally Stable State for Parallel Ion Cyclotron Waves

    We derive an equation whose solutions describe self-consistent states of marginal stability for a proton-electron plasma interacting with parallel-propagating ion cyclotron waves. Ion cyclotron waves propagating through this marginally stable plasma will neither grow nor damp. The dispersion relation of these waves, {\omega} (k), smoothly rises from the usual MHD behavior at small |k| to reach {\omega} = {\Omega}p as k \rightarrow \pm\infty. The proton distribution function has constant phase-space density along the characteristic resonant surfaces defined by this dispersion relation. Our equation contains a free function describing the variation of the proton phase-space density across these surfaces. Taking this free function to be a simple "box function", we obtain specific solutions of the marginally stable state for a range of proton parallel betas. The phase speeds of these waves are larger than those given by the cold plasma dispersion relation, and the characteristic surfaces are more sharply peaked in the v\bot direction. The threshold anisotropy for generation of ion cyclotron waves is also larger than that given by estimates which assume bi-Maxwellian proton distributions.Comment: in press in Physics of Plasma

    Health Literacy, Diabetes Prevention, and Self-Management

    International audienceOBJECTIVE:To identify the factors that can predict physicians' use of electronic prescribing.DESIGN:All primary care physicians who practised in a single geographic region in Quebec were invited to use a free, advanced, research-based electronic prescribing and drug management system. This natural experiment was studied with an expansion of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which was used to explain early adopters' use of this electronic prescribing technology.SETTING:Quebec city region.PARTICIPANTS:A total of 61 primary care physicians who practised in a single geographic region where there was no electronic prescribing.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:Actual use of electronic prescribing; physicians' perceptions of and intentions to use electronic prescribing; physician and practice characteristics.RESULTS:During the 9-month study period, 61 primary care physicians located in 26 practice sites used electronic prescribing to write 15 160 electronic prescriptions for 18 604 patients. Physician electronic prescribing rates varied considerably, from a low of 0 to a high of 75 per 100 patient visits, with a mean utilization rate of 30 per 100 patient visits. Overall, 34% of the variance in the use of electronic prescribing was explained by the expanded TAM. Computer experience (P=.001), physicians' information-acquisition style (P=.01), and mean medication use in the practice (P=.02) were significant predictors. Other TAM factors that generally predict new technology adoption (eg, intention to use, perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness) were not predictive in this study.CONCLUSION:The adoption of electronic prescribing was a highly challenging task, even among early adopters. The insight that this pilot study provides into the determinants of the adoption of electronic prescribing suggests that novel physician-related factors (eg, information-acquisition style) and practice-related variables (eg, prevalence of medication use) influence the adoption of electronic prescribing

    A Feedback System for the Motor Learning of Skills in Golf

    AbstractThis paper presents a feedback GUI to improve the motor skills of a subject performing a golf putt. In this paper inertial sensors (gyroscopes) and video were used to capture the swing. Feedback was provided by a graphical user interface created in Matlab and displayed the video of the putt and quantitative values such as the putt tempo (ratio Backswing duration: Downswing duration) and score which gives an indication of how close the putt tempo is to the ideal rato of (2:1). A zero-crossing method was used to determine the swing phases and durations from the rotational velocity.The effectiveness of the feedback GUI was tested using 10 participants (4 experienced and 6 inexperienced). Each participant executed two sets of 15 putts over distances of 3m, 6m and 9m on an artificial turf putting surface with feedback provided by the GUI between the two sets of putts. The results indicated that overall tempo ratio of experienced and inexperienced participants became closer to 2:1 after the feedback. The standard deviation also decreased which meant that participants also improved their putting consistency. The results indicate that the participants were able to improve their skill in terms of putting performance indicators after using the feedback GUI

    Estimation and Validation of Oceanic Mass Circulation from the GRACE Mission

    Since the launch of the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) in March 2002, the Earth's surface mass variations have been monitored with unprecedented accuracy and resolution. Compared to the classical spherical harmonic solutions, global high-resolution mascon solutions allows the retrieval of mass variations with higher spatial and temporal sampling (2 degrees and 10 days). We present here the validation of the GRACE global mascon solutions by comparing mass estimates to a set of about 100 ocean bottom pressure (OSP) records, and show that the forward modelling of continental hydrology prior to the inversion of the K-band range rate data allows better estimates of ocean mass variations. We also validate our GRACE results to OSP variations modelled by different state-of-the-art ocean general circulation models, including ECCO (Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean) and operational and reanalysis from the MERCATOR project

    The Feasibility of Health Trainer Improved Patient Self-Management in Patients with Low Health Literacy and Poorly Controlled Diabetes: A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial

    Type 2 diabetes mellitus is most prevalent in deprived communities and patients with low health literacy have worse glycaemic control and higher rates of diabetic complications. However, recruitment from this patient population into intervention trials is highly challenging. We conducted a study to explore the feasibility of recruitment and to assess the effect of a lay health trainer intervention, in patients with low health literacy and poorly controlled diabetes from a socioeconomically disadvantaged population, compared with usual care. Methods. A pilot RCT comparing the LHT intervention with usual care. Patients with HbA1c > 7.5 (58 mmol/mol) were recruited. Baseline and 7-month outcome data were entered directly onto a laptop to reduce patient burden. Results. 76 patients were recruited; 60.5% had low health literacy and 75% were from the most deprived areas of England. Participants in the LHT arm had significantly improved mental health (p = 0.049) and illness perception (p = 0.040). The intervention was associated with lower resource use, better patient self-care management, and better QALY profile at 7-month follow-up. Conclusion. This study describes successful recruitment strategies for hard-to-reach populations. Further research is warranted for this cost-effective, relatively low-cost intervention for a population currently suffering a disproportionate burden of diabetes, to demonstrate its sustained impact on treatment effects, health, and health inequalities

The present work constitutes the first atomistic-scale quantitative measurements of grain boundary and bulk compositions in the oxide scale of a current generation polycrystalline nickel superalloy performed through atom probe tomography. Titanium was found to be particularly detrimental to oxide scale growth through grain boundary diffusion

    An Iterated Global Mascon Solution with Focus on Land Ice Mass Evolution

    Land ice mass evolution is determined from a new GRACE global mascon solution. The solution is estimated directly from the reduction of the inter-satellite K-band range rate observations taking into account the full noise covariance, and formally iterating the solution. The new solution increases signal recovery while reducing the GRACE KBRR observation residuals. The mascons are estimated with 10-day and 1-arc-degree equal area sampling, applying anisotropic constraints for enhanced temporal and spatial resolution of the recovered land ice signal. The details of the solution are presented including error and resolution analysis. An Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) adaptive filter is applied to the mascon solution time series to compute timing of balance seasons and annual mass balances. The details and causes of the spatial and temporal variability of the land ice regions studied are discussed

    The relationship between dust and [C I] at z = 1 and beyond

    © 2018 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.Measuring molecular gas mass is vital for understanding the evolution of galaxies at high redshifts (z ≳ 1). Most measurements rely on CO as a tracer, but dependencies on metallicity, dynamics, and surface density lead to systematic uncertainties in high-z galaxies, where these physical properties are difficult to observe, and where the physical environments can differ systematically from those at z = 0. Dust continuum emission provides a potential alternative assuming a known dust/gas ratio, but this must be calibrated on a direct gas tracer at z ≳ 1. In this paper, we consider the [C I] 492-GHz emission line, which has been shown to trace molecular gas closely throughout Galactic clouds and has the advantages of being optically thin in typical conditions (unlike CO), and being observable at accessible frequencies at high redshifts (in contrast to the low-excitation lines of CO). We use the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array to measure [C I], CO(4–3), and dust emission in a representative sample of star-forming galaxies at z = 1, and combine these data with multiwavelength spectral energy distributions to study relationships between dust and gas components of galaxies. We uncover a strong [C I]–dust correlation, suggesting that both trace similar phases of the gas. By incorporating other samples from the literature, we show that this correlation persists over a wide range of luminosities and redshifts up to z ∼ 4. Finally, we explore the implications of our results as an independent test of literature calibrations for dust as a tracer of gas mass, and for predicting the C I abundance.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
