Detections and Constraints on White Dwarf Variability from Time-Series GALEX Observations
We search for photometric variability in more than 23,000 known and candidate
white dwarfs, the largest ultraviolet survey compiled for a single study of
white dwarfs. We use gPhoton, a publicly available calibration/reduction
pipeline, to generate time-series photometry of white dwarfs observed by GALEX.
By implementing a system of weighted metrics, we select sources with
variability due to pulsations and eclipses. Although GALEX observations have
short baselines (< 30 min), we identify intrinsic variability in sources as
faint as Gaia G = 20 mag. With our ranking algorithm, we identify 49 new
variable white dwarfs (WDs) in archival GALEX observations. We detect 41 new
pulsators: 37 have hydrogen-dominated atmospheres (DAVs), including one
possible massive DAV, and four are helium-dominated pulsators (DBVs). We also
detect eight new eclipsing systems; five are new discoveries, and three were
previously known spectroscopic binaries. We perform synthetic injections of the
light curve of WD 1145+017, a system with known transiting debris, to test our
ability to recover similar systems. We find that the 3{\sigma} maximum
occurrence rate of WD 1145+017-like transiting objects is < 0.5%.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figure
The Galactic Center with Roman
We advocate for a Galactic center (GC) field to be added to the Galactic
Bulge Time Domain Survey (GBTDS). The new field would yield high-cadence
photometric and astrometric measurements of an unprecedented 3.3
million stars toward the GC. This would enable a wide range of science cases,
such as finding star-compact object binaries that may ultimately merge as
LISA-detectable gravitational wave sources, constraining the mass function of
stars and compact objects in different environments, detecting populations of
microlensing and transiting exoplanets, studying stellar flares and variability
in young and old stars, and monitoring accretion onto the central supermassive
black hole. In addition, high-precision proper motions and parallaxes would
open a new window into the large-scale dynamics of stellar populations at the
GC, yielding insights into the formation and evolution of galactic nuclei and
their co-evolution with the growth of the supermassive black hole. We discuss
the possible trade-offs between the notional GBTDS and the addition of a GC
field with either an optimal or minimal cadence. Ultimately, the addition of a
GC field to the GBTDS would dramatically increase the science return of Roman
and provide a legacy dataset to study the mid-plane and innermost regions of

Roman CCS White Paper: Characterizing the Galactic population of isolated black holes
Although there are estimated to be 100 million isolated black holes (BHs) in
the Milky Way, only one has been found so far, resulting in significant
uncertainty about their properties. The Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey
provides the only opportunity in the coming decades to grow this catalog by
order(s) of magnitude. This can be achieved if 1) Roman's astrometric potential
is fully realized in the observation strategy and software pipelines, 2)
Roman's observational gaps of the Bulge are minimized, and 3) observations with
ground-based facilities are taken of the Bulge to fill in gaps during non-Bulge
seasons. A large sample of isolated BHs will enable a broad range of
astrophysical questions to be answered, such as massive stellar evolution,
origin of gravitational wave sources, supernova physics, and the growth of

The 1994 Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) shifted federal lands management from a focus on timber production to ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation. The plan established a network of conservation reserves and an ecosystem management strategy on ~10 million hectares from northern California to Washington State, USA, within the range of the federally threatened northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina). Several subsequent assessments—and 20 years of data from monitoring programs established under the plan—have demonstrated the effectiveness of this reserve network and ecosystem management approach in making progress toward attaining many of the plan’s conservation and ecosystem management goals. This paper (1) showcases the fundamental conservation biology and ecosystem management principles underpinning the NWFP as a case study for managers interested in large-landscape conservation; and (2) recommends improvements to the plan’s strategy in response to unprecedented climate change and land-use threats. Twenty years into plan implementation, however, the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, under pressure for increased timber harvest, are retreating from conservation measures. We believe that federal agencies should instead build on the NWFP to ensure continuing success in the Pacific Northwest. We urge federal land managers to (1) protect all remaining late-successional/old-growth forests; (2) identify climate refugia for at-risk species; (3) maintain or increase stream buffers and landscape connectivity; (4) decommission and repair failing roads to improve water quality; (5) reduce fire risk in fire-prone tree plantations; and (6) prevent logging after fires in areas of high conservation value. European Stroke Organisation guideline on endarterectomy and stenting for carotid artery stenosis
Atherosclerotic stenosis of the internal carotid artery is an important cause of stroke. The aim of this guideline is to analyse the evidence pertaining to medical, surgical and endovascular treatment of patients with carotid stenosis. These guidelines were developed based on the ESO standard operating procedure and followed the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. The working group identified relevant questions, performed systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the literature, assessed the quality of the available evidence, and wrote recommendations. Based on moderate quality evidence, we recommend carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in patients with ≥60–99% asymptomatic carotid stenosis considered to be at increased risk of stroke on best medical treatment (BMT) alone. We also recommend CEA for patients with ≥70–99% symptomatic stenosis, and we suggest CEA for patients with 50–69% symptomatic stenosis. Based on high quality evidence, we recommend CEA should be performed early, ideally within two weeks of the last retinal or cerebral ischaemic event in patients with ≥50–99% symptomatic stenosis. Based on low quality evidence, carotid artery stenting (CAS) may be considered in patients < 70 years old with symptomatic ≥50–99% carotid stenosis. Several randomised trials supporting these recommendations were started decades ago, and BMT, CEA and CAS have evolved since. The results of another large trial comparing outcomes after CAS versus CEA in patients with asymptomatic stenosis are anticipated in the near future. Further trials are needed to reassess the benefits of carotid revascularisation in combination with modern BMT in subgroups of patients with carotid stenosis
