    Catch-up growth strategies differ between body structures: interactions between age and structure-specific growth in wild nestling Alpine swifts

    1. Little is known on the occurrence and magnitude of faster than normal (catch-up) growth in response to periods of undernutrition in the wild, and the extent to which different body structures compensate and over what timescales is poorly understood. 2. We investigated catch-up growth in nestling Alpine Swifts, Apus melba, by comparing nestling growth trajectories in response to a naturally occurring 1-week period of inclement weather and undernutrition with growth of nestlings reared in a good year. 3. In response to undernutrition, nestlings exhibited a hierarchy of tissues preservation and compensation, with body mass being restored quickly after the end of the period of undernutrition, acceleration of skeletal growth occurring later in development, and compensation in wing length occurring mostly due to a prolongation of growth and delayed fledging. 4. The effect of undernutrition and subsequent catch-up growth was age-dependent, with older nestlings being more resilient to undernutrition, and in turn having less need to compensate later in the development. 5. This shows that young in a free-living bird population can compensate in body mass and body size for a naturally occurring period of undernutrition, and that the timing and extent of compensation varies with age and between body structures

    Big brother is watching you: eavesdropping to resolve family conflicts

    Adult animals can eavesdrop on behavioral interactions between potential opponents to assess their competitive ability and motivation to contest resources without interacting directly with them. Surprisingly, eavesdropping is not yet considered as an important factor used to resolve conflicts between family members. In this study, we show that nestling barn owls (Tyto alba) competing for food eavesdrop on nestmates' vocal interactions to assess the dominance status and food needs of opponents. During a first training playback session, we broadcasted to singleton bystander nestlings a simulated vocal interaction between 2 prerecorded individuals, 1 relatively old (i.e., senior) and 1 younger nestling (i.e., junior). One playback individual, the "responder,” called systematically just after the "initiator” playback individual, hence displaying a higher hunger level. To test whether nestlings have eavesdropped on this interaction, we broadcasted the same prerecorded individuals separately in a subsequent playback test session. Nestlings vocalized more rapidly after former initiators' than responders' calls and they produced more calls when the broadcasted individual was formerly a junior initiator. They chiefly challenged vocally juniors and initiators against whom the likelihood of winning a vocal contest is higher. Owlets, therefore, identified the age hierarchy between 2 competitors based on their vocalizations. They also memorized the dynamics of competitors' previous vocal interactions, and used this information to optimally adjust signaling level once interacting with only 1 of the competitor.     3D Lowest Landau Level Theory Applied to YBCO Magnetization and Specific Heat Data: Implications for the Critical Behavior in the H-T Plane

    We study the applicability of magnetization and specific heat equations derived from a lowest-Landau-level (LLL) calculation, to the high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) materials of the YBa2_2Cu3_3O7δ_{7-\delta} (YBCO) family. We find that significant information about these materials can be obtained from this analysis, even though the three-dimensional LLL functions are not quite as successful in describing them as the corresponding two-dimensional functions are in describing data for the more anisotropic HTSC Bi- and Tl-based materials. The results discussed include scaling fits, an alternative explanation for data claimed as evidence for a second order flux lattice melting transition, and reasons why 3DXY scaling may have less significance than previously believed. We also demonstrate how 3DXY scaling does not describe the specific heat data of YBCO samples in the critical region.     Randomized clinical trial on epidural versus patient-controlled analgesia for laparoscopic colorectal surgery within an enhanced recovery pathway.

    OBJECTIVE: To compare epidural analgesia (EDA) to patient-controlled opioid-based analgesia (PCA) in patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery. BACKGROUND: EDA is mainstay of multimodal pain management within enhanced recovery pathways [enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS)]. For laparoscopic colorectal resections, the benefit of epidurals remains debated. Some consider EDA as useful, whereas others perceive epidurals as unnecessary or even deleterious. METHODS: A total of 128 patients undergoing elective laparoscopic colorectal resections were enrolled in a randomized clinical trial comparing EDA versus PCA. Primary end point was medical recovery. Overall complications, hospital stay, perioperative vasopressor requirements, and postoperative pain scores were secondary outcome measures. Analysis was performed according to the intention-to-treat principle. RESULTS: Final analysis included 65 EDA patients and 57 PCA patients. Both groups were similar regarding baseline characteristics. Medical recovery required a median of 5 days (interquartile range [IQR], 3-7.5 days) in EDA patients and 4 days (IQR, 3-6 days) in the PCA group (P = 0.082). PCA patients had significantly less overall complications [19 (33%) vs 35 (54%); P = 0.029] but a similar hospital stay [5 days (IQR, 4-8 days) vs 7 days (IQR, 4.5-12 days); P = 0.434]. Significantly more EDA patients needed vasopressor treatment perioperatively (90% vs 74%, P = 0.018), the day of surgery (27% vs 4%, P < 0.001), and on postoperative day 1 (29% vs 4%, P < 0.001), whereas no difference in postoperative pain scores was noted. CONCLUSIONS: Epidurals seem to slow down recovery after laparoscopic colorectal resections without adding obvious benefits. EDA can therefore not be recommended as part of ERAS pathways in laparoscopic colorectal surgery

    Enhanced Recovery after Elective Colorectal Surgery - Reasons for Non-Compliance with the Protocol.

    Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols for elective colorectal surgery reduce the intensity of postoperative complications, hospital stays and costs. Improvements in clinical outcome are directly proportional to the adherence to the recommended pathway (compliance). The aim of the present study was to analyze reasons for the non-compliance of colorectal surgeries with the ERAS protocol. A consecutive cohort of patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery was prospectively analyzed with regards to the surgery's compliance with the ERAS protocol. The reason for every single protocol deviation was documented and the decision was categorized based on whether it was medically justified or not. During the 8-month study period, 76 patients were included. The overall compliance with 22 ERAS items was 76% (96% in the preoperative, 82% in the perioperative, and 63% in the postoperative period). The decision to deviate from the clinical pathway was mainly a medical decision, while patients and nurses were responsible in 26 and 14% of the cases, respectively. However, reasons for non-compliance were medically justified in 78% of the study participants. 'Non-compliance' with the ERAS protocol was observed mostly in the postoperative period. Most deviations from the pathway were decided by doctors and in a majority of cases it appeared that they were due to a medical necessity rather than non-compliance. However, almost a quarter of deviations that were absolutely required are still amenable to improvement

    Enhanced recovery pathway for urgent colectomy.

    BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery protocols have been proven to decrease complications and hospital stay following elective colorectal surgery. However, these principles have not yet been reported for urgent surgery procedures. We aimed to assess our initial experience with urgent colectomies performed within an established enhanced recovery pathway. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, all patients undergoing colonic resection between April 2012 and March 2013 were treated according to a standardized enhanced recovery protocol. Urgent surgeries were compared with the elective procedures with regards to baseline characteristics, compliance with enhanced recovery items, and clinical outcome. RESULTS: Patients (N = 28) requiring urgent colonic resection were included and compared with patients undergoing elective colectomy (N = 63). Overall compliance with the protocol was 57% for the urgent compared with 77% for the elective procedures (p = 0.006). The pre-operative compliance was 64 versus 96% (p < 0.001), the intra-operative compliance was 77 versus 86% (p = 0.145), and the post-operative compliance was 49 versus 67% (p = 0.015), for the urgent and elective resections, respectively. Overall, 18 urgent patients (64%) and 32 elective patients (51%) developed postoperative complications (p = 0.261). Median postoperative length of stay was 8 days in the urgent setting compared with 5 days in the elective setting (p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Many of the intra-operative and post-operative enhanced recovery items can also be applied to urgent colectomy, entailing outcomes that approach the results achieved in the elective setting

    Melanic color-dependent antipredator behavior strategies in barn owl nestlings

    The arms race between predators and prey has led to morphological and behavioral adaptations. Different antipredator strategies can coexist within a population if each strategy is the result of a trade-off with competing demands. Antipredator behavior can be associated with morphological traits, like color patterns, either because in the context of sexual selection, coloration signals the ability to avoid predators or because coloration is a naturally selected trait useful in avoiding predators. Because in the barn owl (Tyto alba), heritable eumelanic plumage coloration is associated with the glucocorticoid-dependent response to stress, we tested whether antipredator behavior is also related to this trait. Compared with small-spotted nestlings, individuals displaying larger black spots hissed more intensely in the presence of humans, feigned death longer, had a lower breathing rate under stress, and were more docile when handled. Cross-fostering experiments showed that the covariation between the spot size and the duration of feigning death was inherited from the biological mother, whereas covariation between spot size and docility was inherited from the biological father. Our results confirm that melanin-based coloration is associated with suites of behavioral traits, which are under both genetic and environmental influence. Coloration can thus evolve as a direct or indirect response to predation, but it can also be a signal of antipredator strategies to potential mate

    Evaluation of two minimally invasive techniques for electroencephalogram recording in wild or freely behaving animals

    Insight into the function of sleep may be gained by studying animals in the ecological context in which sleep evolved. Until recently, technological constraints prevented electroencephalogram (EEG) studies of animals sleeping in the wild. However, the recent development of a small recorder (Neurologger 2) that animals can carry on their head permitted the first recordings of sleep in nature. To facilitate sleep studies in the field and to improve the welfare of experimental animals, herein, we test the feasibility of using minimally invasive surface and subcutaneous electrodes to record the EEG in barn owls. The EEG and behaviour of four adult owls in captivity and of four chicks in a nest box in the field were recorded. We scored a 24-h period for each adult bird for wakefulness, slow-wave sleep (SWS), and rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep using 4s epochs. Although the quality and stability of the EEG signals recorded via subcutaneous electrodes were higher when compared to surface electrodes, the owls' state was readily identifiable using either electrode type. On average, the four adult owls spent 13.28h awake, 9.64h in SWS, and 1.05h in REM sleep.     Social huddling and physiological thermoregulation are related to melanism in the nocturnal barn owl.

    Endothermic animals vary in their physiological ability to maintain a constant body temperature. Since melanin-based coloration is related to thermoregulation and energy homeostasis, we predict that dark and pale melanic individuals adopt different behaviours to regulate their body temperature. Young animals are particularly sensitive to a decrease in ambient temperature because their physiological system is not yet mature and growth may be traded-off against thermoregulation. To reduce energy loss, offspring huddle during periods of cold weather. We investigated in nestling barn owls (Tyto alba) whether body temperature, oxygen consumption and huddling were associated with melanin-based coloration. Isolated owlets displaying more black feather spots had a lower body temperature and consumed more oxygen than those with fewer black spots. This suggests that highly melanic individuals display a different thermoregulation strategy. This interpretation is also supported by the finding that, at relatively low ambient temperature, owlets displaying more black spots huddled more rapidly and more often than those displaying fewer spots. Assuming that spot number is associated with the ability to thermoregulate not only in Swiss barn owls but also in other Tytonidae, our results could explain geographic variation in the degree of melanism. Indeed, in the northern hemisphere, barn owls and allies are less spotted polewards than close to the equator, and in the northern American continent, barn owls are also less spotted in colder regions. If melanic spots themselves helped thermoregulation, we would have expected the opposite results. We therefore suggest that some melanogenic genes pleiotropically regulate thermoregulatory processes
