Gesture analysis for physics education researchers
Systematic observations of student gestures can not only fill in gaps in
students' verbal expressions, but can also offer valuable information about
student ideas, including their source, their novelty to the speaker, and their
construction in real time. This paper provides a review of the research in
gesture analysis that is most relevant to physics education researchers and
illustrates gesture analysis for the purpose of better understanding student

Singular value decomposition and matrix reorderings in quantum information theory
We review Schmidt and Kraus decompositions in the form of singular value
decomposition using operations of reshaping, vectorization and reshuffling. We
use the introduced notation to analyse the correspondence between quantum
states and operations with the help of Jamiolkowski isomorphism. The presented
matrix reorderings allow us to obtain simple formulae for the composition of
quantum channels and partial operations used in quantum information theory. To
provide examples of the discussed operations we utilize a package for the
Mathematica computing system implementing basic functions used in the

Efficient preparation and detection of microwave dressed-state qubits and qutrits with trapped ions
We demonstrate a method for preparing and detecting all eigenstates of a three-level microwave dressed system with a single trapped ion. The method significantly reduces the experimental complexity of gate operations with dressed-state qubits, as well as allowing all three of the dressed states to be prepared and detected, thereby providing access to a qutrit that is well protected from magnetic field noise. In addition, we demonstrate individual addressing of the clock transitions in two ions using a strong static magnetic field gradient, showing that our method can be used to prepare and detect microwave dressed states in a string of ions when performing multi-ion quantum operations with microwave and radio frequency fields. The individual addressability of clock transitions could also allow for the control of pairwise interaction strengths between arbitrary ions in a string using lasers
Bose-Fermi mixtures in 1D optical superlattices
The zero temperature phase diagram of binary boson-fermion mixtures in
two-colour superlattices is investigated. The eigenvalue problem associated
with the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved using an exact numerical
diagonalization technique, supplemented by an adaptive basis truncation scheme.
The physically motivated basis truncation allows to access larger systems in a
fully controlled and very flexible framework. Several experimentally relevant
observables, such as the matter-wave interference pattern and the
condensatefraction, are investigated in order to explore the rich phase
diagram. At symmetric half filling a phase similar to the Mott-insulating phase
in a commensurate purely bosonic system is identified and an analogy to recent
experiments is pointed out. Furthermore a phase of complete localization of the
bosonic species generated by the repulsive boson-fermion interaction is
identified. These localized condensates are of a different nature than the
genuine Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Bingham Dai, Adolf Storfer, and the tentative beginnings of psychoanalytic culture in China, 1935-1941.
This paper looks at the work of two figures who, while marginal to theoretical developments within the history of psychoanalysis, each briefly played an important role in the dissemination of analytical ideas in China, contributing to an early psychoanalytic culture there. Bingham Dai, a native of China, while studying for a PhD in sociology at Chicago, received instruction from Harry Stack Sullivan and a psychoanalytic training under Karen Horney's supervision. However, the neo-Freudian outlook with which this experience imbued him had its roots in an earlier encounter with his experiments in personality education first conducted on students in a Tientsin high school, and later in Shantung under the direction of the conservative Confucian scholar and reformer, Liang Shu Ming. These experiences convinced him that a less orthodox psychoanalytic perspective was what Chinese patients with psychological problems required. He returned in 1935 to teach medical psychology to doctors at Peking Union Medical College, taking a few into analysis and treating some patients. However, the Sino-Japanese war brought these activities to a close and he left in 1939, just a few months after the former Freud publisher and Viennese émigré, Adolf Storfer, arrived. Storfer set about publishing "Gelbe Post," a German language periodical replete with articles on psychoanalysis, linguistics and Chinese culture. But limited finances, severe competition from a rival publisher, plus his own ill health, forced him to abandon this in spite of the support offered him through the many contributors in the international psychoanalytic community whose articles he published. Enhancement of the Deuteron-Fusion Reactions in Metals and its Experimental Implications
Recent measurements of the reaction d(d,p)t in metallic environments at very
low energies performed by different experimental groups point to an enhanced
electron screening effect. However, the resulting screening energies differ
strongly for divers host metals and different experiments. Here, we present new
experimental results and investigations of interfering processes in the
irradiated targets. These measurements inside metals set special challenges and
pitfalls which make them and the data analysis particularly error-prone. There
are multi-parameter collateral effects which are crucial for the correct
interpretation of the observed experimental yields. They mainly originate from
target surface contaminations due to residual gases in the vacuum as well as
from inhomogeneities and instabilities in the deuteron density distribution in
the targets. In order to address these problems an improved differential
analysis method beyond the standard procedures has been implemented. Profound
scrutiny of the other experiments demonstrates that the observed unusual
changes in the reaction yields are mainly due to deuteron density dynamics
simulating the alleged screening energy values. The experimental results are
compared with different theoretical models of the electron screening in metals.
The Debye-H\"{u}ckel model that has been previously proposed to explain the
influence of the electron screening on both nuclear reactions and radioactive

Hierarchical model for the scale-dependent velocity of seismic waves
Elastic waves of short wavelength propagating through the upper layer of the
Earth appear to move faster at large separations of source and receiver than at
short separations. This scale dependent velocity is a manifestation of Fermat's
principle of least time in a medium with random velocity fluctuations. Existing
perturbation theories predict a linear increase of the velocity shift with
increasing separation, and cannot describe the saturation of the velocity shift
at large separations that is seen in computer simulations. Here we show that
this long-standing problem in seismology can be solved using a model developed
originally in the context of polymer physics. We find that the saturation
velocity scales with the four-third power of the root-mean-square amplitude of
the velocity fluctuations, in good agreement with the computer simulations.Comment: 7 pages including 3 figure
A Study of the Antiferromagnetic Phase in the Hubbard Model by means of the Composite Operator Method
We have investigated the antiferromagnetic phase of the 2D, the 3D and the
extended Hubbard models on a bipartite cubic lattice by means of the Composite
Operator Method within a two-pole approximation. This approach yields a fully
self-consistent treatment of the antiferromagnetic state that respects the
symmetry properties of both the model and the algebra. The complete phase
diagram, as regards the antiferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phases, has been
drawn. We firstly reported, within a pole approximation, three kinds of
transitions at half-filling: Mott-Hubbard, Mott-Heisenberg and Heisenberg. We
have also found a metal-insulator transition, driven by doping, within the
antiferromagnetic phase. This latter is restricted to a very small region near
half filling and has, in contrast to what has been found by similar approaches,
a finite critical Coulomb interaction as lower bound at half filling. Finally,
it is worth noting that our antiferromagnetic gap has two independent
components: one due to the antiferromagnetic correlations and another coming

The Carnegie Supernova Project I: photometry data release of low-redshift stripped-envelope supernovae
The first phase of the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP-I) was a dedicated
supernova follow-up program based at the Las Campanas Observatory that
collected science data of young, low-redshift supernovae between 2004 and 2009.
Presented in this paper is the CSP-I photometric data release of low-redshift
stripped-envelope core-collapse supernovae. The data consist of optical
(uBgVri) photometry of 34 objects, with a subset of 26 having near-infrared
(YJH) photometry. Twenty objects have optical pre-maximum coverage with a
subset of 12 beginning at least five days prior to the epoch of B-band maximum
brightness. In the near-infrared, 17 objects have pre-maximum observations with
a subset of 14 beginning at least five days prior to the epoch of J-band
maximum brightness. Analysis of this photometric data release is presented in
companion papers focusing on techniques to estimate host-galaxy extinction
(Stritzinger et al., submitted) and the light-curve and progenitor star
properties of the sample (Taddia et al., submitted). The analysis of an
accompanying visual-wavelength spectroscopy sample of ~150 spectra will be the
