This paper investigates the well-known topos \u2018cities are men\u2019, first attested in Alcaeus, and mainly focuses on the gnomic statement found in fragment 828 from Euripides\u2019 Phrixus. The comparison of this fragment with previous occurrences of the topos not only clarifies its interpretation, but also allows to propose a relative dating of the Phrixus. Moreover, the analysis pursued here identifies a new occurrence of the topos in Euripides\u2019 Cyclops (vv. 115-116), and shows that the opposition between \u3c0\u3cc\u3bb\u3b9\u3c2/\u1f10\u3c1\u3b7\u3bc\u3af\u3b1 does not have evidence military implications in this case

In Calvino's work East and West are strictly correlated. East, in particular, offers cues to fantastically transform themes and styles that cross through his whole creative career. In 1977 Calvino, in collaboration with the artist Toti Scialoja, worked for the production of a series of six fairy-tales to be performed on stage – L'ussaro e la luna, Lo specchio e il bersaglio, La foresta-radice-labirinto, La città abbandonata, Le porte di Bagdad, Il naufrago Valdemaro – collected under the same title Il teatro dei ventagli. Starting from the analysis of these texts, the essay wants to know how in the author's intentions there is a clear contact and dialogue with a different culture. A dialogue that Calvino’s other works have hardly emphasized in a similar keen and suggestive manner, recalling, at the same time, with few but essential lines, few and significant gestures, a linear and bare theatre, plunged in a dreamlike and fantastic atmosphere, mindful of the Oriental lesson and of the deep symbolic charge of his subjects.

This paper investigates the well-known topos ‘cities are men’, first attested in Alcaeus, and mainly focuses on the gnomic statement found in fragment 828 from Euripides’ Phrixus. Una matrigna in frammenti: Ino

This paper aims to investigate the role of the ‘murderous stepmother’ in Euripidean fragmentary tragedies, by focusing on Ino, Phrixus and Helle’s stepmother in Phrixus A and B, in order to outline the main features through the analysis of these fragmentary plays and the comparison with other extant plays and fragmentary ones. Specifically, the clues found for reconstructing the tragic plot are the following: Ino turns out to be non-stereotypical character, namely a stepmother who pronounces a gnome concerning stepmothers’ hostility towards stepchildren as a self-warning, not with the intention of dispelling the rumour, but to accomplish her own plan without any obstacles (fr. 824 K); the verb μηχανάομαι attested in the hypothesis of Phrixus A, a key-word of the language of deception, seems to suggest that also fr. 874 K refers to Ino; in fr. 822b K distortion in communication between Ino, who swears up and down in order to get what she wants, and her husband Athamas, deprived of authority from his wife, highlights the opposition between female vs male as a key-theme of the tragic plot; lastly, the analysis of the fragmentary data available suggests that there is a female Chorus beside Ino, who is proven to be only a temporary interlocutor and, as opposed to what usually happens, banishes the stepmother in a condition of deep solitude

Digital Edition of Fragmentary Ancient Greek Tragedy (DEFrAG-Tragedy): idea progettuale e modello di codifica

    Get PDF
DEFrAG-Tragedy, acronym for Digital Edition of Fragmentary Ancient Greek Tragedy, is a project for a born-digital scholarly edition of Greek tragic fragments, starting from the analysis of a sample of Euripides’ lost plays. This edition – composed of introduction, critical text, translation and commentary – is entirely XML/TEI annotated, ‘usable’, dynamic, expandable and collaborative. The present paper illustrates the structure and functions of such a critical edition (also by means of the ‘prototype on paper’ of the graphical user interface) and defines XML/TEI annotation model, namely with reference to the annotation: (a) of the structure of lost tragedies; (b) of the text, critical apparatus, translation and commentary on tragic fragments; (c) of the introduction to tragedies and of the paratextual sections

Cell-cell interaction between somatic cells as well as gametes involves molecular events that have not been completely elucidated. Our research group has developed projects aimed at studying proteins and mechanisms participating in these interactions. Several modulators of sperm functions have been analyzed (i.e. incubation temperature, calcium ion concentration, and antisperm antibodies present in biological fluids upon sperm motility, capacitation and acrosomal exocytosis). In addition, proteins from spermatozoa (i.e. CaM Kinase IV, proacrosin/acrosin) and from secretions of the female tract (Grp78/BiP) have been characterized, and their role in the development of sperm fertilizing ability assessed. In some cases, their relationship with infertility was evaluated. In recent years, our projects have been extended to study members of the cadherin superfamily and related proteins; in particular, the expression of epithelial and neural cadherin in reproductive tissues and gametes was characterized and evidence of their participation in fertilization-related cell-cell adhesion events shown. Based on the vast evidence of the role of these proteins in tumor progression, our current research also involves studies of cancer models. Our projects have contributed to the understanding of the molecular basis of cell-cell interaction during fertilization as well as during tumor progression. The interplay between serine proteases and caspase-1 regulates the autophagy-mediated secretion of Interleukin-1 beta in human neutrophils

    Get PDF
Neutrophils play major roles against bacteria and fungi infections not only due to their microbicide properties but also because they release mediators like Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) that contribute to orchestrate the inflammatory response. This cytokine is a leaderless protein synthesized in the cytoplasm as a precursor (pro-IL-1β) that is proteolytically processed to its active isoform and released from human neutrophils by secretory autophagy. In most myeloid cells, pro-IL-1β is processed by caspase-1 upon inflammasome activation. Here we employed neutrophils from both healthy donors and patients with a gain-of-function (GOF) NLRP3-mutation to dissect IL-1β processing in these cells. We found that although caspase-1 is required for IL-1β secretion, it undergoes rapid inactivation, and instead, neutrophil serine proteases play a key role in pro-IL-1β processing. Our findings bring to light distinctive features of the regulation of caspase-1 activity in human neutrophils and reveal new molecular mechanisms that control human neutrophil IL-1β secretion.Fil: Keitelman, Irene Angélica.
