    Le galassie sono gli elementi costitutivi del nostro universo e questo elaborato vuole, in particolare, studiare le galassie ellittiche nella loro morfologia e la fisica che governa i processi d’emissione di radiazione che avvengono al loro interno. A tale proposito, dopo aver descritto la forma e la struttura delle galassie ellittiche (Sezione 1) e introdotto alcune delle leggi empiriche più importanti (Sezione 2), si porrà l’attenzione sui processi radiativi che caratterizzano tali galassie nella banda ottica, X e radio (Sezione 3), proponendo infine un esempio concreto facendo riferimento alla galassia ellittica M87 (Sezione 4)

    How subjective and non-physical parameters affect occupants’ environmental comfort perception

    Employees’ wellbeing and comfort perception demonstrated to largely influence their productivity and tolerability of slight thermal discomfort conditions in the working spaces. Their whole comfort perception indeed depends on several parameters related to physical boundary conditions but also to the adaptation capability of occupants themselves and other personal, difficult to measure, variables. According to the available standards and regulations, only physical and measurable environmental parameters must be considered to evaluate occupants’ comfort conditions. Therefore, non-measurable factors such as socio-psychological, physiological, medical ones are currently not systematically considered. The present work aims to identify possible benefits in terms of occupants’ comfort perception due to non-physical strategies aimed at improving the work-environment quality and livability. To this aim, the environmental multi-physics and multi-domain performance of a mixed industry-office building is investigated through coupled in-field microclimate monitoring and questionnaires campaigns. The experimental microclimate monitoring and survey campaign were carried out to understand (i) the realistic indoor environmental conditions in terms of physical and measurable parameters and (ii) the personal perceptions and attitudes of the occupants with respect to those same ambient parameters, including also acoustic, lighting and medical investigation. Moreover, the collected experimental data were used to determine occupants’ comfort level through the classic comfort models, to be compared to the identified role of non-physical parameters on occupants’ final perception about the indoor environment. The main results show that non-measurable factors induced by virtuous company policy to improve employees’ working environment are effectively able to positively influence their whole-comfort perception even if the majority of workers do not have the opportunity to control their working environment. In fact, the consolidated comfort theories underestimate people satisfaction, as demonstrated by more than the 80% employees, who declared to be positively influenced by the pleasant aesthetics and livability of the workplace. The year-round experimental campaign demonstrated the need to further investigate the key role of non-physical parameters for possible incorporation into whole-comfort prediction models and standards. The role of such strategies could therefore be realistically considered as energy saving opportunities since they make building occupants much more open to tolerate slight uncomfortable conditions

    Influence of the patellar button thickness on the knee flexion after total knee arthroplasty

    Purpose: One of the main problems of knee replacement is the limit of knee flexion. This study focuses on the knee implant and the patellar component currently in use in total knee arthroplasty, analyzing the influence of patellar thickness on the degree of knee flexion following surgery. Methods: A kinematics study was performed to evaluate whether an optimal patellar thickness can be identified, which enables the maximum flexion angle to be achieved. Using TC images, a healthy model was built. On this basis, a model of a knee joint which had undergone total knee arthroplasty using a Legion PS prosthesis was constructed. Initially, the standard thickness of patellar implant (9 mm) was used to build the model; then several different patellar implant thicknesses (in the range of 5–15 mm) were analyzed. Results: The results show a non-linear trend: a button thickness of less than 9 mm does not change the flexion angle, whereas a button thickness of over 9 mm results in a loss of flexion. The flexion loss is significant in the first two additions of thicknesses but negligible in the last ones. Conclusions: In the case studied, flexion reduction is not linearly proportional to the patellar thickness. The outcome of total knee arthroplasty is considered to be satisfactory with the standard patellar button. The results of this study could be used to compare the kinematics with other total prosthesis and patellar implants, and should enable the optimization of the patellar residue bone thickness to obtain deep flexion

    Traumi infantili, intelligenza emotiva e regolazione delle emozioni in un campione di autori di reati sessuali

    The aim of the following study is to examine in the Italian context, the prevalence of adverse childhood experience in a sample of detainee sexual offenders, and their correlation with risk of recidivism, emotional intelligence and emotion regulation. The sample is composed by 32 inmates. For the study the following instruments were used: ACE, DERS-16, TMMS and RM2000. The results show high presence of childhood traumas between sex offenders, and a strong correlation between adverse experiences and a higher risk of recidivism, a lower emotional intelligence and more difficulties in the regulation of bad emotions. Clinical consideration about treatment of sex offender are discussed.L’obiettivo del presente studio è quello di analizzare nel contesto italiano, la prevalenza di traumi infantili in un campione di autori di reati sessuali e indagare quale relazione intercorra tra i pregressi traumi infantili, il rischio di recidiva, l’intelligenza emotiva e la regolazione delle emozioni. Il campione è costituito da 32 soggetti detenuti. Per le rilevazioni sono stati usati i seguenti strumenti: ACE, DERS-16, TMMS e RM2000. Le analisi statistiche mostrano una significativa presenza di traumi infantili e evidenziano una forte correlazione tra questi, il rischio di recidiva, l’intelligenza emotiva e la capacità di gestione delle emozioni negative. Infine, sono discusse alcune implicazioni relative al trattamento conseguenti ai risultati ottenuti

    A model of anti-angiogenesis: differential transcriptosome profiling of microvascular endothelial cells from diffuse systemic sclerosis patients

    The objective of this work was to identify genes involved in impaired angiogenesis by comparing the transcriptosomes of microvascular endothelial cells from normal subjects and patients affected by systemic sclerosis (SSc), as a unique human model disease characterized by insufficient angiogenesis. Total RNAs, prepared from skin endothelial cells of clinically healthy subjects and SSc patients affected by the diffuse form of the disease, were pooled, labeled with fluorochromes, and hybridized to 14,000 70 mer oligonucleotide microarrays. Genes were analyzed based on gene expression levels and categorized into different functional groups based on the description of the Gene Ontology (GO) consortium to identify statistically significant terms. Quantitative PCR was used to validate the array results. After data processing and application of the filtering criteria, the analyzable features numbered 6,724. About 3% of analyzable transcripts (199) were differentially expressed, 141 more abundantly and 58 less abundantly in SSc endothelial cells. Surprisingly, SSc endothelial cells over-express pro-angiogenic transcripts, but also show up-regulation of genes exerting a powerful negative control, and down-regulation of genes critical to cell migration and extracellular matrix-cytoskeleton coupling, all alterations that provide an impediment to correct angiogenesis. We also identified transcripts controlling haemostasis, inflammation, stimulus transduction, transcription, protein synthesis, and genome organization. An up-regulation of transcripts related to protein degradation and ubiquitination was observed in SSc endothelial cells. We have validated data on the main anti-angiogenesis-related genes by RT-PCR, western blotting, in vitro angiogenesis and immunohistochemistry. These observations indicate that microvascular endothelial cells of patients with SSc show abnormalities in a variety of genes that are able to account for defective angiogenesis

    Liver involvement and mortality in COVID-19: A retrospective analysis from the CORACLE study group

    INTRODUCTION: liver abnormalities are common in COVID-19 patients and associated with higher morbidity and mortality. We aimed to investigate clinical significance and effect on the mortality of abnormal liver function tests (ALFTs) in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: we retrospectively evaluated in a multicentre study all patients admitted with confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. RESULTS: 434 patients were included in this analysis. Among overall patients, 311 (71.6%) had normal baseline ALT levels. 123 patients showed overall abnormal liver function tests (ALFTs) at baseline [101 ALFTs <2x UNL and 22 ≥2 UNL]. Overall in-hospital mortality was 14% and mean duration of hospitalization was 10.5 days. Hypertension (50.5%), cardiovascular diseases (39.6%), diabetes (23%) were frequent comorbidities and 53.7% of patients had ARDS. At multivariate analysis, the presence of ARDS at baseline (OR=6.11; 95% CI: 3.03–12.32; p<0.000); cardiovascular diseases (OR=4; 95% CI: 2.05–7.81; p<0.000); dementia (OR=3.93; 95%CI:1.87–8.26; p<0.000) and no smoking (OR=4.6; 95% CI: 1.45–14.61; p=0.010) resulted significantly predictive of in-hospital mortality. The presence of ALFTs at baseline was not significantly associated with mortality (OR=3.44; 95% CI=0.81–14.58; p=0.094). CONCLUSION: ALFTs was frequently observed in COVID-19 patients, but the overall in-hospital mortality was mainly determined by the severity of illness, comorbidities and presence of ARDS

    Knowledge and beliefs on vaccines among a sample of Italian pregnant women: results from the NAVIDAD study

    BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy is an emerging phenomenon in European countries and leads to decreasing trends in infant vaccine coverage. The aim of this study was to analyze the level of confidence and correct awareness about immunizations, which are crucial for the success of vaccination programmes. METHODS: As part of the NAVIDAD multicentre study, we examined vaccination confidence and complacency among a sample of 1820 pregnant women from 14 Italian cities. The questionnaire assessed the interviewee's knowledge, beliefs and misconceptions, as well as their socioeconomic status, information sources about vaccines and confidence in the Italian National Healthcare Service. RESULTS: Only 9% of women completely believed to the efficacy, necessity and safety of vaccinations. Almost 20% of them had misconceptions on most of the themes. There was a significant difference in the level of knowledge considering educational level: women with a high educational level have less probability of obtaining a low knowledge score (odds ratio (OR) 0.43 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.34-0.54]). The level of knowledge was also influenced by the sources of information: women who received information from their general practitioner (GP) and from institutional websites had a significantly lower chance of having misconceptions (OR 0.74 [95% CI 0.58-0.96]; OR 0.59 [95% CI 0.46-0.74]). Finally, the results underlined the influence of trust in healthcare professional information on the likelihood of having misconceptions (OR 0.49 [95% CI 0.27-0.89]). CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest the efficacy of GPs and institutional websites as a source of information to contrast misconceptions and underline the importance of confidence in the healthcare system to increase complacency and confidence in vaccines

    Localization of anatomical changes in patients during proton therapy with in-beam PET monitoring: a voxel-based morphometry approach exploiting Monte Carlo simulations

    Purpose: In-beam positron emission tomography (PET) is one of the modalities that can be used for in vivo noninvasive treatment monitoring in proton therapy. Although PET monitoring has been frequently applied for this purpose, there is still no straightforward method to translate the information obtained from the PET images into easy-to-interpret information for clinical personnel. The purpose of this work is to propose a statistical method for analyzing in-beam PET monitoring images that can be used to locate, quantify, and visualize regions with possible morphological changes occurring over the course of&nbsp;treatment. Methods: We selected a patient treated for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with proton therapy, to perform multiple Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the expected PET signal at the start of treatment, and to study how the PET signal may change along the treatment course due to morphological changes. We performed voxel-wise two-tailed statistical tests of the simulated PET images, resembling the voxel-based morphometry (VBM) method commonly used in neuroimaging data analysis, to locate regions with significant morphological changes and to quantify the&nbsp;change. Results: The VBM resembling method has been successfully applied to the simulated in-beam PET images, despite the fact that such images suffer from image artifacts and limited statistics. Three dimensional probability maps were obtained, that allowed to identify interfractional morphological changes and to visualize them superimposed on the computed tomography (CT) scan. In particular, the characteristic color patterns resulting from the two-tailed statistical tests lend themselves to trigger alarms in case of morphological changes along the course of&nbsp;treatment. Conclusions: The statistical method presented in this work is a promising method to apply to PET monitoring data to reveal interfractional morphological changes in patients, occurring over the course of treatment. Based on simulated in-beam PET treatment monitoring images, we showed that with our method it was possible to correctly identify the regions that changed. Moreover we could quantify the changes, and visualize them superimposed on the CT scan. The proposed method can possibly help clinical personnel in the replanning procedure in adaptive proton therapy treatments

    In-vivo range verification analysis with in-beam PET data for patients treated with proton therapy at CNAO

    Morphological changes that may arise through a treatment course are probably one of the most significant sources of range uncertainty in proton therapy. Non-invasive in-vivo treatment monitoring is useful to increase treatment quality. The INSIDE in-beam Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner performs in-vivo range monitoring in proton and carbon therapy treatments at the National Center of Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO). It is currently in a clinical trial (ID: NCT03662373) and has acquired in-beam PET data during the treatment of various patients. In this work we analyze the in-beam PET (IB-PET) data of eight patients treated with proton therapy at CNAO. The goal of the analysis is twofold. First, we assess the level of experimental fluctuations in inter-fractional range differences (sensitivity) of the INSIDE PET system by studying patients without morphological changes. Second, we use the obtained results to see whether we can observe anomalously large range variations in patients where morphological changes have occurred. The sensitivity of the INSIDE IB-PET scanner was quantified as the standard deviation of the range difference distributions observed for six patients that did not show morphological changes. Inter-fractional range variations with respect to a reference distribution were estimated using the Most-Likely-Shift (MLS) method. To establish the efficacy of this method, we made a comparison with the Beam's Eye View (BEV) method. For patients showing no morphological changes in the control CT the average range variation standard deviation was found to be 2.5&nbsp;mm with the MLS method and 2.3&nbsp;mm with the BEV method. On the other hand, for patients where some small anatomical changes occurred, we found larger standard deviation values. In these patients we evaluated where anomalous range differences were found and compared them with the CT. We found that the identified regions were mostly in agreement with the morphological changes seen in the CT scan
