    Theoretical Issues in Flavor Physics

Quark and lepton flavor physics presents us with a basic question: Can we understand the pattern of masses and mixings of the known quarks and leptons, and how do present and proposed measurements help to advance that goal? Topics discussed include the apparent suppression of new flavor-changing effects, the status of quark and lepton mixing, the implications of new measurements of CP asymmetries in heavy quark decays, the impications of forthcoming experiments on the muon's anomalous magnetic moment and its transitions to an electron, and what we can hope to learn from electric dipole moments.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, presentation at the DPF 2013 Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Particles and Fields, Santa Cruz, California, August 13-17, 2013. CP Violation: Past, Present, and Future

We discuss the history of CP violation and its manifestations in kaon physics, its explanation in terms of phases of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix describing charge-changing weak quark transitions, predictions for experiments involving BB mesons, and the light it can shed on physics beyond the Standard Model.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX, 8 figures, Invited talk presented at XXI Brazilian National Meeting on Particles and Fields, Sao Lourenco, Minas Gerais, October 23--26, 2000, proceedings to be published in a special issue of the Brazilian Journal of Physics. Some theoretical aspects of BB physics are reviewed. These include a brief recapitulation of information on weak quark transitions as described by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, a description of CP asymmetries in BB decays to CP eigenstates and self-tagging modes, a discussion of final-state phases in BB and charm decays, some topics on BsB_s properties and decays, the prospects for unusual excited BB states opened by discovery of some narrow csˉc \bar s resonances, and the prospects for seeing the heavier Q=1/3Q=1/3 quarks predicted in some extended grand unified theories.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, 12 figures, invited talk presented at Fourth Tropical Workshop, Cairns, Australia, 9--13 June 2003. Proceedings to be published by AIP. Some updated figure

M2 signatures in psi(2S) radiative decays

The sensitivity of observables in radiative decays psi(2S) -> gamma chi_{1,2} -> gamma gamma J/psi to quadrupole (M2) admixtures in the dominant electric dipole (E1) transitions is explored. Emphasis is placed on distributions in a single angle, and several examples are given.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev. D. Additional data and referenc

    Introduction to BB Physics

A short introduction to some current topics in BB physics is presented in order to set the stage for some results to be announced at this Workshop. After briefly reviewing the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix and information on its parameters, the decays of neutral BB mesons to several CP eigenstates, and some B→πKB \to \pi K decays, are discussed. It is shown that progress is being made on determination of all the angles of the unitarity triangle.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, 7 figures plus photo, invited talk presented at XXXVIII Rencontres de Moriond: Electroweak Interactions and Unified Theories, Les Arcs, France, March 15-22, 2003. To be published in the Proceedings. More typographic corrections; two figures improved furthe

Exotic states of matter in heavy meson decays

The potential of decays of mesons containing heavy quarks [including BB mesons and the Υ(1S)\Upsilon(1S)] for producing final states of matter with unusual quark configurations, such as qqqˉqˉq q \bar q \bar q or qqqqqˉq q q q \bar q, is investigated. The usefulness of antineutron detection in such searches is stressed.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D. References and some text adde
