Nonelastic nuclear reactions and accompanying gamma radiation
Several aspects of nonelastic nuclear reactions which proceed through the formation of a compound nucleus are dealt with. The full statistical model and the partial statistical model are described and computer programs based on these models are presented along with operating instructions and input and output for sample problems. A theoretical development of the expression for the reaction cross section for the hybrid case which involves a combination of the continuum aspects of the full statistical model with the discrete level aspects of the partial statistical model is presented. Cross sections for level excitation and gamma production by neutron inelastic scattering from the nuclei Al-27, Fe-56, Si-28, and Pb-208 are calculated and compared with avaliable experimental data
Possible re-entrant superconductivity in EuFe2As2 under pressure
We studied the temperature-pressure phase diagram of EuFe2As2 by measurements
of the electrical resistivity. The antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave
transition at T_0 associated with the FeAs-layers is continuously suppressed
with increasing pressure, while the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of
the Eu 2+ moments seems to be nearly pressure independent up to 2.6 GPa. Above
2 GPa a sharp drop of the resistivity, \rho(T), indicates the onset of
superconductivity at T_c \approx 29.5 K. Surprisingly, on further reducing the
temperature \rho(T) is increasing again and exhibiting a maximum caused by the
ordering of the Eu 2+ moments, a behavior which is reminiscent of re-entrant
superconductivity as it is observed in the ternary Chevrel phases or in the
rare-earth nickel borocarbides
Superconductivity in the New Platinum Germanides MPt4Ge12 (M = Rare-earth and Alkaline-earth Metals) with Filled Skutterudite Structure
New germanium-platinum compounds with the filled-skutterudite crystal
structure were synthesized. The structure and composition were investigated by
X-ray diffraction and microprobe analysis. Magnetic susceptibility, specific
heat, and electrical resistivity measurements evidence superconductivity in
LaPt4Ge12 and PrPt4Ge12 below 8.3K. The parameters of the normal and
superconducting states were established. Strong coupling and a crystal electric
field singlet groundstate is found for the Pr compound. Electronic structure
calculations show a large density of states at the Fermi level. Similar
behavior with lower T_c was observed for SrPt4Ge12 and BaPt4Ge12.Comment: RevTeX, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters July 12, 200
Competition between the BCS superconductivity and ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in MgCNi
The low temperature specific heat of the superconductor MgCNi and a
non-superconductor MgCNi is investigated in detail. An additional
contribution is observed from the data of MgCNi but absent in
MgCNi, which is demonstrated to be insensitive to the applied
magnetic field even up to 12 Tesla. A detailed discussion on its origin is then
presented. By subtracting this additional contribution, the zero field specific
heat of MgCNi can be well described by the BCS theory with the gap ratio
() determined by the previous tunneling measurements. The
conventional s-wave pairing state is further proved by the magnetic field
dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures and the behavior of the
upper critical field.Comment: To appear in Physical Review B, 6 pages, 7 figure
On the Mixing of the Scalar Mesons , and
Based on a mass matrix describing the mixing of the scalar states
, and , the hadronic decays of the three
states are investigated. Taking into account the two possible assumptions
concerning the mass level order of the bare states
, and in the
scalar sector, and , we obtain the
glueball-quarkonia content of the three states by solving the unlinear
equations. Some predictions about the decays of the three states in two cases
are presented, which can provide a stringent consistency check of the two
assumptions.Comment: revtex 10 pages, 1 eps figur
Evidence for s-wave pairing from measurement on lower critical field in
Magnetization measurements in the low field region have been carefully
performed on a well-shaped cylindrical and an ellipsoidal sample of
superconductor . Data from both samples show almost the same results.
The lower critical field and the London penetration depth
are thus derived. It is found that the result of normalized superfluid density
of can be well described by BCS
prediction with the expectation for an isotropic s-wave superconductivity.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Tight-binding parameters and exchange integrals of Ba_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2
Band structure calculations for Ba_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2 within the local density
approximation (LDA) are presented. The investigated compound is similar to the
antiferromagnetic parent compounds of cuprate superconductors but contains
additional Cu_B atoms in the planes. Within the LDA, metallic behavior is found
with two bands crossing the Fermi surface (FS). These bands are built mainly
from Cu 3d_{x^2-y^2} and O 2p_{x,y} orbitals, and a corresponding tight-binding
(TB) model has been parameterized. All orbitals can be subdivided in two sets
corresponding to the A- and B-subsystems, respectively, the coupling between
which is found to be small. To describe the experimentally observed
antiferromagnetic insulating state, we propose an extended Hubbard model with
the derived TB parameters and local correlation terms characteristic for
cuprates. Using the derived parameter set we calculate the exchange integrals
for the Cu_3O_4 plane. The results are in quite reasonable agreement with the
experimental values for the isostructural compound Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2.Comment: 5 pages (2 tables included), 4 ps-figure
X-ray absorption spectroscopy on layered cobaltates Na_xCoO_2
Measurements of polarization and temperature dependent soft x-ray absorption
have been performed on Na_xCoO_2 single crystals with x=0.4 and x=0.6. They
show a deviation of the local trigonal symmetry of the CoO_6 octahedra, which
is temperature independent in a temperature range between 25 K and 372 K. This
deviation was found to be different for Co^{3+} and Co^{4+} sites. With the
help of a cluster calculation we are able to interpret the Co L_{23}-edge
absorption spectrum and find a doping dependent energy splitting between the
t_{2g} and the e_g levels (10Dq) in Na_xCoO_2.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Pressure-induced phase transitions and high-pressure tetragonal phase of Fe1.08Te
We report the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the temperature-induced
phase transitions in Fe1.08Te in the pressure range 0-3 GPa using synchrotron
powder x-ray diffraction (XRD). The results reveal a plethora of phase
transitions. At ambient pressure, Fe1.08Te undergoes simultaneous first-order
structural symmetry-breaking and magnetic phase transitions, namely from the
paramagnetic tetragonal (P4/nmm) to the antiferromagnetic monoclinic (P2_1/m)
phase. We show that, at a pressure of 1.33 GPa, the low temperature structure
adopts an orthorhombic symmetry. More importantly, for pressures of 2.29 GPa
and higher, a symmetry-conserving tetragonal-tetragonal phase transition has
been identified from a change in the c/a ratio of the lattice parameters. The
succession of different pressure and temperature-induced structural and
magnetic phases indicates the presence of strong magneto-elastic coupling
effects in this material.Comment: 11 page
Meson Decay Constants from Isospin Mass Splittings in the Quark Model
Decay constants of and mesons are estimated within the framework of a
heavy-quark approach using measured isospin mass splittings in the , ,
and states to isolate the electromagnetic hyperfine interaction between
quarks. The values MeV and MeV are
obtained. Only experimental errors are given; possible theoretical ambiguities,
and suggestions for reducing them, are noted.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, EFI-92-3
