Design of a 12-GHz multicarrier earth-terminal for satellite-CATV interconnection
The design and development of the front-end for a multi-carrier system that allows multiplex signal transmission from satellite-borne transponders is described. Detailed systems analyses provided down-converter specifications. The 12 GHz carrier down-converter uses waveguide, coaxial, and microstrip transmission line elements in its implementation. Mixing is accomplished in a single-ended coaxial mixer employing a field-replacable cartridge style diode
Conductivity of Metallic Si:B near the Metal-Insulator Transition: Comparison between Unstressed and Uniaxially Stressed Samples
The low-temperature dc conductivities of barely metallic samples of p-type
Si:B are compared for a series of samples with different dopant concentrations,
n, in the absence of stress (cubic symmetry), and for a single sample driven
from the metallic into the insulating phase by uniaxial compression, S. For all
values of temperature and stress, the conductivity of the stressed sample
collapses onto a single universal scaling curve. The scaling fit indicates that
the conductivity of si:B is proportional to the square-root of T in the
critical range. Our data yield a critical conductivity exponent of 1.6,
considerably larger than the value reported in earlier experiments where the
transition was crossed by varying the dopant concentration. The larger exponent
is based on data in a narrow range of stress near the critical value within
which scaling holds. We show explicitly that the temperature dependences of the
conductivity of stressed and unstressed Si:B are different, suggesting that a
direct comparison of the critical behavior and critical exponents for stress-
tuned and concentration-tuned transitions may not be warranted

Die Hartz-Reform vollzog sich in einer Reihe von markanten Einzelschritten zwischen 2003 und 2005 und ging mit einer Vielzahl von Veränderungen in allen Bereichen der aktiven und passiven Arbeitsmarktpolitik einher. Ein Kerngedanke der Hartz-Kommission bestand dabei darin, die Arbeitslosigkeit durch eine Senkung der durchschnittlichen Arbeitslosigkeitsdauer zu reduzieren. Durch eine Verkürzung der durchschnittlichen Arbeitslosigkeitsdauer um ein Drittel sollte eine Halbierung der Arbeitslosigkeit erreicht werden (Kommission zum Abbau der Arbeitslosigkeit und zur Umstrukturierung der Bundesanstalt für Arbeit 2002). Dementsprechend waren die vorgeschlagenen Instrumente darauf ausgerichtet, zum einen Vermittlungsprozesse zu beschleunigen und zum an deren den Bezug von Lohnersatzleistungen weniger attraktiv zu machen. Letzteres bedeutete vor allem, die Inanspruchnahme der Arbeitslosenversicherung als faktisches Frühverrentungsinstrument einzuschränken
Quantum spin glass in anisotropic dipolar systems
The spin-glass phase in the \LHx compound is considered. At zero transverse
field this system is well described by the classical Ising model. At finite
transverse field deviations from the transverse field quantum Ising model are
significant, and one must take properly into account the hyperfine
interactions, the off-diagonal terms in the dipolar interactions, and details
of the full J=8 spin Hamiltonian to obtain the correct physical picture. In
particular, the system is not a spin glass at finite transverse fields and does

Percolating through networks of random thresholds: Finite temperature electron tunneling in metal nanocrystal arrays
We investigate how temperature affects transport through large networks of
nonlinear conductances with distributed thresholds. In monolayers of
weakly-coupled gold nanocrystals, quenched charge disorder produces a range of
local thresholds for the onset of electron tunneling. Our measurements
delineate two regimes separated by a cross-over temperature . Up to
the nonlinear zero-temperature shape of the current-voltage curves survives,
but with a threshold voltage for conduction that decreases linearly with
temperature. Above the threshold vanishes and the low-bias conductance
increases rapidly with temperature. We develop a model that accounts for these

The Electron Glass in a Switchable Mirror: Relaxation, Aging and Universality
The rare earth hydride YH can be tuned through the
metal-insulator transition both by changing and by illumination with
ultraviolet light. The transition is dominated by strong electron-electron
interactions, with transport in the insulator sensitive to both a Coulomb gap
and persistent quantum fluctuations. Via a systematic variation of UV
illumination time, photon flux, Coulomb gap depth, and temperature, we
demonstrate that polycrystalline YH serves as a model system for
studying the properties of the interacting electron glass. Prominent among its
features are logarithmic relaxation, aging, and universal scaling of the
conductivity
Local magnetometry at high fields and low temperatures using InAs Hall sensors
We characterize the temperature (0.3⩽T⩽300 K), magnetic field(0⩽H⩽80 kOe), and thickness (0.1, 0.5, and 2.5 μm) dependence of the Hall response of high purity InAs epilayers grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The high sensitivity, linearity, and temperature independence of the response make them attractive for local Hall probe magnetometry, and uniquely qualified for high field applications below liquid helium temperatures. As a stringent test of performance, we use a six element micron-sized array to monitor the internal field gradient during vortex avalanches at milliKelvin temperatures in a single crystal of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7−δ)
Critical Behavior of the Conductivity of Si:P at the Metal-Insulator Transition under Uniaxial Stress
We report new measurements of the electrical conductivity sigma of the
canonical three-dimensional metal-insulator system Si:P under uniaxial stress
S. The zero-temperature extrapolation of sigma(S,T -> 0) ~\S - S_c\^mu shows an
unprecidentedly sharp onset of finite conductivity at S_c with an exponent mu =
1. The value of mu differs significantly from that of earlier stress-tuning
results. Our data show dynamical sigma(S,T) scaling on both metallic and
insulating sides, viz. sigma(S,T) = sigma_c(T) F(\S - S_cT^y) where sigma_c(T)
is the conductivity at the critical stress S_c. We find y = 1/znu = 0.34 where
nu is the correlation-length exponent and z the dynamic critical exponent.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
High Resolution Study of Magnetic Ordering at Absolute Zero
High fidelity pressure measurements in the zero temperature limit provide a
unique opportunity to study the behavior of strongly interacting, itinerant
electrons with coupled spin and charge degrees of freedom. Approaching the
exactitude that has become the hallmark of experiments on classical critical
phenomena, we characterize the quantum critical behavior of the model,
elemental antiferromagnet chromium, lightly doped with vanadium. We resolve the
sharp doubling of the Hall coefficient at the quantum critical point and trace
the dominating effects of quantum fluctuations up to surprisingly high
