Study made of mechanics of deformation and fracture of fibrous composites

    Get PDF
Report summarizes the findings of studies made of the influence of both fiber and matrix characteristics upon the mechanics of deformation and fracture of fibrous composites. The major portion of the report is devoted to a study of the mechanics of tensile failure of a fibrous composite

A concept for improving the dimensional stability of filamentary composites in one direction

    Get PDF
Investigation of filamentary composites having high strength and stiffness and a zero thermal coefficient of expansion in one direction shows that advanced filament materials, such as boron, have substantial advantages over conventional filamentary composites. Various other results are discussed, including guidelines and analysis methods for further evaluation

    Testing filamentary composites

NOL ring split-dee tensile test has the advantages that the specimen is readily fabricated by winding and the test is performed in a conventional testing machine without special fixtures. Strain gages cannot be mounted, however, and substantial bending moments are introduced

Study reveals composite combination evaluations for boron binder reinforcements for unidirectly reinforced boron/epoxy, glass binder reinforcements for unidirectionally reinforced boron/epoxy, and glass binder reinforcements for unidrectionally reinforced glass/epoxy

    Unidirectional composite stiffening

Simple structural elements are explored with configurations selected to best utilize composite materials. Combination of the biaxial properties of beryllium or an isotropic composite with the uniaxial properties of one directional filamentary reinforcement is studied

A study of RSI under combined stresses

    Get PDF
The behavior of typical rigidized surface insulation material (RSI) under combined loading states was investigated. In particular, the thermal stress states induced during reentry of the space shuttle were of prime concern. A typical RSI tile was analyzed for reentry thermal stresses under computed thermal gradients for a model of the RSI material. The results of the thermal stress analyses were then used to aid in defining typical combined stress states for the failure analysis of RSI

    F-14A aircraft high-speed flow simulations

A model of the Grumman/Navy F-14A aircraft was developed for analyses using the NASA/Grumman Transonic Wing-Body Code. Computations were performed for isolated wing and wing fuselage glove arrangements to determine the extent of aerodynamic interference effects which propagate outward onto the main wing outer panel. Additional studies were conducted using the full potential analysis, FLO 22, to calibrate any inaccuracies that might accrue because of small disturbance code limitations. Comparisons indicate that the NASA/Grumman code provides excellent flow simulations for the range of wing sweep angles and flow conditions that will be of interest for the upcoming F-14 Variable Sweep Flight Transition Experiment

Development of a realistic stress analysis for fatigue analysis of notched composite laminates

    Get PDF
A finite element stress analysis which consists of a membrane and interlaminar shear spring analysis was developed. This approach was utilized in order to model physically realistic failure mechanisms while maintaining a high degree of computational economy. The accuracy of the stress analysis predictions is verified through comparisons with other solutions to the composite laminate edge effect problem. The stress analysis model was incorporated into an existing fatigue analysis methodology and the entire procedure computerized. A fatigue analysis is performed upon a square laminated composite plate with a circular central hole. A complete description and users guide for the computer code FLAC (Fatigue of Laminated Composites) is included as an appendix
