Exchange Rate Policy in Small Rich Economies

    Get PDF
We look at the exchange rate policy choices and outcomes for small rich economies. Small rich economies face significant policy challenges due to proportionately greater economic volatility than larger economies. These economies usually choose some form of fixed exchange rate regime, particularly in the very small economies where the per capita cost of independent monetary policy is relatively high. When such countries do choose a free or managed floating regime, they appear to derive no benefit from those regimes; their exchange rate volatility seems to rise without any significant change in fundamental economic volatility. Thus, for these countries, floating exchange rates seem to create problems for policy makers without solving any.

Deterministic annealing, constrained clustering, and optimization

    Get PDF
In previous work the authors (Phys. Rev. Let., vol.65, p.945-8, 1990) proposed the concept of deterministic annealing for the problem of clustering and vector quantization. This approach is summarized. The authors extend the clustering method to the constraint clustering method. Adding constraints to the deterministic annealing mechanism expands the variety of optimization problems which can be solved by this method. A brief presentation of the clustering approach is given. Two examples to which the constraint clustering approach can be applied are included

Probing the Weak Boson Sector in γeZe\gamma e\rightarrow Ze

We study possible deviations from the standard model in the reaction γeZe\gamma e\rightarrow Ze at a 500 GeV e+ee^+e^- collider. As a photon source we use a laser backscattered photon beam. We investigate the most general γZγ\gamma Z\gamma and γZZ\gamma ZZ vertices including operators up to energy-dimension-six which are Lorentz invariant. These vertices require four extra parameters; two are CP-conserving, h1γh^\gamma_1 and h1Zh^Z_1, and two are CP-violating, h2γh^\gamma_2 and h2Zh^Z_2. We present analytical expressions of the helicity amplitudes for the process γeZe\gamma e\rightarrow Ze for arbitrary values of anomalous couplings. Assuming Standard Model values are actually measured we present the allowed region in the (h1γ,h1Zh^\gamma_1,h^Z_1) plane at the 90\% confidence level. We then show how the angular correlation of the ZZ decay products can be used to extract detailed information on the anomalous (especially CP-violating) γZγ\gamma Z\gamma and γZZ\gamma ZZ couplings.Comment: Latex, 25 pages, 12 figures (not included). Teleological Essentialism

    Get PDF
Placeholder essentialism is the view that there is a causal essence that holds category members together, though we may not know what the essence is. Sometimes the placeholder can be filled in by scientific essences, such as when we acquire scientific knowledge that the atomic weight of gold is 79. We challenge the view that placeholders are elaborated by scientific essences. On our view, if placeholders are elaborated, they are elaborated Aristotelian essences, a telos. Utilizing the same kinds of experiments used by traditional essentialists—involving superficial change (study 1), transformation of insides (study 2), acquired traits (study 3) and inferences about offspring (study 4)—we find support for the view that essences are elaborated by a telos. And we find evidence (study 5) that teleological essences may generate category judgments

Angular Correlations in Internal Pair Conversion of Aligned Heavy Nuclei

    Get PDF
We calculate the spatial correlation of electrons and positrons emitted by internal pair conversion of Coulomb excited nuclei in heavy ion collisions. The alignment or polarization of the nucleus results in an anisotropic emission of the electron-positron pairs which is closely related to the anisotropic emission of γ\gamma-rays. However, the angular correlation in the case of internal pair conversion exhibits diverse patterns. This might be relevant when investigating atomic processes in heavy-ion collisions performed at the Coulomb barrier.Comment: 27 pages + 6 eps figures, uses revtex.sty and epsf.sty, tar-compressed and uuencoded with uufile

Tagging Scientific Publications using Wikipedia and Natural Language Processing Tools. Comparison on the ArXiv Dataset

In this work, we compare two simple methods of tagging scientific publications with labels reflecting their content. As a first source of labels Wikipedia is employed, second label set is constructed from the noun phrases occurring in the analyzed corpus. We examine the statistical properties and the effectiveness of both approaches on the dataset consisting of abstracts from 0.7 million of scientific documents deposited in the ArXiv preprint collection. We believe that obtained tags can be later on applied as useful document features in various machine learning tasks (document similarity, clustering, topic modelling, etc.)
