Coal-rock interface detector
A coal-rock interface detector is presented which employs a radioactive source and radiation sensor. The source and sensor are separately and independently suspended and positioned against a mine surface of hydraulic pistons, which are biased from an air cushioned source of pressurized hydraulic fluid
Learning medical alarms whilst performing other tasks.
Two studies are reported which first observe, and then attempt to replicate, the cognitive demands of intensive care unit (ICU) activity whilst concurrently learning audible alarms. The first study, an observational study in an ICU ward, showed that the alarms are very frequent and co-occur with some activities more than others. The three most frequently observed activities observed in the ICU were drugs (calculation, preparation and administration), patient observation and talking. The cognitive demands of these activities were simulated in a second, laboratory-based experiment in which alarms were learned. The results showed that performance in the alarm task generally improved as participants were exposed to more repetitions of those alarms, but that performance decrements were observed in the secondary tasks, particularly when there were two or three of them. Some confusions between the alarms persisted to the end of the study despite prolonged exposure to the alarms, confusions which were likely caused by both acoustic and verbal labelling similarities. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: The cognitive demands of working in an ICU were observed and simulated whilst alarms were learned. Alarms should generally avoid sharing similar rhythmic (and other) characteristics. The simulation task described here could be used for testing alarm learning without requiring a clinical environment
What Have We Learned from Policy Transfer Research? Dolowitz and Marsh Revisited
Over the last decade, policy transfer has emerged as an important concept within public policy analysis, guiding both theoretical and empirical research spanning many venues and issue areas. Using Dolowitz and Marsh's 1996 stocktake as its starting point, this article reviews what has been learned by whom and for what purpose. It finds that the literature has evolved from its rather narrow, state-centred roots to cover many more actors and venues. While policy transfer still represents a niche topic for some researchers, an increasing number have successfully assimilated it into wider debates on topics such as globalisation, Europeanisation and policy innovation. This article assesses the concept's position in the overall ‘tool-kit’ of policy analysis, examines some possible future directions and reflects on their associated risks and opportunities
Spin projection and spin current density within relativistic electronic transport calculations
A spin projection scheme is presented which allows the decomposition of the
electric conductivity into two different spin channels within fully
relativistic transport calculations that account for the impact
of spin-orbit coupling. This is demonstrated by calculations of the
spin-resolved conductivity of FeCr and CoPt disordered
alloys on the basis of the corresponding Kubo-Greenwood equation implemented
using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent potential approximation (KKR-CPA)
band structure method. In addition, results for the residual resistivity of
diluted Ni-based alloys are presented that are compared to theoretical and
experimental ones that rely on Mott's two-current model for spin-polarized

Measured and predicted pressure distributions on the AFTI/F-111 mission adaptive wing
Flight tests have been conducted using an F-111 aircraft modified with a mission adaptive wing (MAW). The MAW has variable-camber leading and trailing edge surfaces that can change the wing camber in flight, while preserving smooth upper surface contours. This paper contains wing surface pressure measurements obtained during flight tests at Dryden Flight Research Facility of NASA Ames Research Center. Upper and lower surface steady pressure distributions were measured along four streamwise rows of static pressure orifices on the right wing for a leading-edge sweep angle of 26 deg. The airplane, wing, instrumentation, and test conditions are discussed. Steady pressure results are presented for selected wing camber deflections flown at subsonic Mach numbers up to 0.90 and an angle-of-attack range of 5 to 12 deg. The Reynolds number was 26 million, based on the mean aerodynamic chord. The MAW flight data are compared to MAW wind tunnel data, transonic aircraft technology (TACT) flight data, and predicted pressure distributions. Correction, improvement and model verification of CARE 3, version 3
An independent verification of the CARE 3 mathematical model and computer code was conducted and reported in NASA Contractor Report 166096, Review and Verification of CARE 3 Mathematical Model and Code: Interim Report. The study uncovered some implementation errors that were corrected and are reported in this document. The corrected CARE 3 program is called version 4. Thus the document, correction. improvement, and model verification of CARE 3, version 3 was written in April 1984. It is being published now as it has been determined to contain a more accurate representation of CARE 3 than the preceding document of April 1983. This edition supercedes NASA-CR-166122 entitled, 'Correction and Improvement of CARE 3,' version 3, April 1983
HST and Spitzer point source detection and optical extinction in powerful narrow-line radio galaxies
We present the analysis of infrared HST and Spitzer data for a sample of 13
FRII radio galaxies at 0.03<z<0.11 that are classified as narrow-line radio
galaxies (NLRG). In the context of the unified schemes for active galactic
nuclei (AGN), our direct view of the AGN in NLRG is impeded by a parsec-scale
dusty torus structure. Our high resolution infrared observations provide new
information about the degree of extinction induced by the torus, and the
incidence of obscured AGN in NLRG.
We find that the point-like nucleus detection rate increases from 25 per cent
at 1.025m, to 80 per cent at 2.05m, and to 100 per cent at 8.0m.
This supports the idea that most NLRG host an obscured AGN in their centre. We
estimate the extinction from the obscuring structures using X-ray, near-IR and
mid-IR data. We find that the optical extinction derived from the 9.7m
silicate absorption feature is consistently lower than the extinction derived
using other techniques. This discrepancy challenges the assumption that all the
mid-infrared emission of NLRG is extinguished by a simple screen of dust at
larger radii. This disagreement can be explained in terms of either weakening
of the silicate absorption feature by (i) thermal mid-IR emission from the
narrow-line region, (ii) non-thermal emission from the base of the radio jets,
or (iii) by direct warm dust emission that leaks through a clumpy torus without

Coherent description of the intrinsic and extrinsic anomalous Hall effect in disordered alloys on an level
A coherent description of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is presented that
is applicable to pure as well as disordered alloy systems by treating all
sources of the AHE on equal footing. This is achieved by an implementation of
the Kubo-St\v{r}eda equation using the fully relativistic
Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green's function method in combination with the
Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory. Applications to the pure
elemental ferromagnets bcc-Fe and fcc-Ni led to results in full accordance with
previous work. For the alloy systems fcc-FePd and
fcc-NiPd very satisfying agreement with experiment could be
achieved for the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) over the whole range of
concentration. To interpret these results an extension of the definition for
the intrinsic AHC is suggested. Plotting the corresponding extrinsic AHC versus
the longitudinal conductivity a linear relation is found in the dilute regimes,
that allows a detailed discussion of the role of the skew and side-jump
