Young Australians, illness and education: report on the national database project
Chronically-ill children who need to take extended absences from school are neither officially acknowledged nor assisted to keep up, according to this report.
Executive summary
Australiaâs health system faces many challenges related to chronic and complex health conditions. Major advances in biomedicine mean that children and young people are now surviving conditions that would have meant early death just a short time ago. This has major implications for Australiaâs education systems.
A troubling side effect of this success in medicine is the number of children and young people who manage their chronic health conditions, but who can easily remain overlooked in education. In many ways this is a new frontier for teachers, schools and education systems. Never before have so many students been present in our classrooms, who have survived major health challenges, but who are not yet systematically supported to thrive in education.
This report provides a detailed summary of education, health and demographic information about Australian children and young people who live with significant health conditions. This study closely examined an important national database of 2360 such individuals.
This study is contextualised within recent international literature from the fields of education, medicine, oncology, public health, paediatric nursing, psychology, counselling, psychiatry and social policy. Socio-economic indexes developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics were employed in the analysis of data.
As Australian government figures are not available about these young people as an educational cohort, the major purpose of this study was to provide an empirical base for policy recommendation and further investigation. An important secondary aim of the study was to contribute to the growing body of evidence about pressing educational issues related to these children and young people. Concern about the education of this group is expected to escalate as this cohort of Australian students continues to expand, due to advances in biomedicine
Closed-Circuit Television in Electron Microscopy
Closed-circuit television adapts well to the educational aspects of electron microscopy in terms of extending immediate student participation. The advantages and some examples of the dual role in education and research of such a system are presented
Examining the Engagement and Academic Success of Students in Blended Science Classrooms
Many educators believe traditional learning environments need to be enhanced to be more engaging to students. New educational methods need to be dynamic and responsive to connect with todayâs learners. One of the most popular new methods is blended learning, which combines dynamic online content with engaging face-to-face learning activities. This review of literature aims to explore the impacts this learning model has made in science classrooms. By changing the way that information is delivered to students, teachers are able to create more in-class learning opportunities for students. Students are able to practice more in the presence of their teacher, and classes can incorporate more hands-on learning. Although the initial set up of a blended classroom may take more time, there are positive outcomes for students
Carbonate Concretions in the Karlicher Loess Profile, Rheinland
A loess profile near the town of Karlich in the Rhein-land of Western Germany contains various forms of carbonate which are described in detail. A systematic relationship concerning a transition from finely divided grains of carbonate to large complex concretions is given. The stratigraphic presence of three distinct zones of carbonate concretions and the results of analysis for carbonate content in the entire profile are presented as additional evidence for a ternary (and possibly a quaternary) climatic differentiation of the most recent glacial stage in the Middle Rhein region
The Future of Man, the Great Disperser
We are living in a world which, depending on personal attitude, may to some degree be materialistic in its value orientation, but most certainly is materials-oriented. (Materials are defined here as substances that become useful to society after some form of processing, e.g., mining, harvesting, refining, or fabrication. This excludes foods, drugs, water, and fossil fuels). There are strong indications that the rate and degree of change in the use of materials by our children -and theirs- will reach a point beyond what we can presently envision. In fact, the current emphasis on precarious supplies of fossil fuels has tended to obscure similar trends in certain materials resources. The real problem then is how to get from here to there with a minimum of societal tension but without having a clear picture of where and what there is
