Public Engagement with, and Trust in, Online News Media in French-Speaking Belgium

This paper analyzes the French-speaking Belgian public’s reception of, and trust in, online news media. Based on a qualitative research carried out in 2009-2010, it will be showed that online newsreaders hold divided conceptions of media credibility and trust, some of which fall out of the theoretical/methodological canon of current media credibility research.  Furthermore, respondents appeared to draw upon four heuristics to decide whether or not they place their trust in online news: the transparency heuristic, the accountability heuristic, the reputation heuristic, and the recommendation heuristic. The relevance of these heuristics to trust is clear insofar as they affect both newsreaders’ attributions of trustworthiness to online journalists and news media, and their willingness to engage in trusting relationships with them. At the end of the paper, some conclusions and implications for future research on trust in online news are discussed. This paper analyzes the French-speaking Belgian public’s reception of, and trust in, online news media.

Based on a qualitative study carried out between 2009-2010 with Belgian users of online news sites, this paper provides an ethical analysis of trust in online journalism built upon three moral values highlighted by participants in the study: (1) Journalists’ credibility as a function of their moral responsibility when doing fact checking, (2) online news sites’ reporting and financial transparency, and (3) building networks of trust among readers aimed at promoting online news sites they consider as trustworth

This paper analyzes some implications of computer ethics for online journalism. By drawing on two specific trends, namely Value Sensitive Design and Disclosive Computer Ethics, it will be argued that the design of some computer technologies in online journalism constrain journalists’ and audiences’ action patterns and, consequently, affect core moral values such as privacy, autonomy, justice and democracy. Some relevant conclusions and prospectives for future research will be provided in the final section

Depth of field simulation for still digital images using a 3D camera

High-throughput replica-pinning approach to screen for yeast genes controlling low-frequency events

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a leading model system for genome-wide screens, but low-frequency events (e.g., point mutations, recombination events) are difficult to detect with existing approaches. Here, we describe a high-throughput screening technique to detect low-frequency events using high-throughput replica pinning of high-density arrays of yeast colonies. This approach can be used to screen genes that control any process involving low-frequency events for which genetically selectable reporters are available, e.g., spontaneous mutations, recombination, and transcription errors. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to (Novarina et al., 2020a, 2020b)

La estructura disposicional de los sentimientos

    Get PDF

Geometrical constraints on dark energy models

This contribution intends to give a pedagogical introduction to the topic of dark energy (the mysterious agent supposed to drive the observed late time acceleration of the Universe) and to various observational tests which require only assumptions on the geometry of the Universe. Those tests are the supernovae luminosity, the CMB shift, the direct Hubble data, and the baryon acoustic oscillations test. An historical overview of Cosmology is followed by some generalities on FRW spacetimes (the best large-scale description of the Universe), and then the test themselves are discussed. A convenient section on statistical inference is included as well.Comment: 28 pages, 15 pages, lecture notes prepared for the ``Advanced Summer School in Physics 2007" organized by Cinvestav (Mexico DF
