Why worry about awareness in choice problems? Econometric analysis of screening for cervical cancer
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and curable forms of cancer. Since 1991 there has been a concerted effort in Australia to recommend and encourage women to have Pap smears every two years. Part of the success of this National Cervical Screening Program can be gauged by exploring the determinants of screening for cervical cancer among high-risk women and by addressing the specific question of whether screening is associated with socio-economic status. Accessibility to health services remains a core goal in health policy in Australia but evidence on whether the goal is being met is limited. Using unit record data from the 1995 National Health Survey, an econometric model is developed for whether women have ever screened or not. A proportion of women in the sample contend that they have never heard of a Pap test. The analysis characterizes this group of women and accounts for their presence in our modellingScreening choice; Awareness; Censored probit; Cervical cancer
Comparison of bread wheat varieties with different breeding origin under organic and low input management
The aims of the study were to compare 37 bread wheat varieties with different breeding origin under conventional and organic farming conditions in Hungary and Austria for three years and to identify traits highly sensitive to management systems that could be separated according to their suggested selecting environments. According to the results, heading date, sensitivity to leaf rust and powdery mildew had high heritability, thus, for economic reasons, it is reasonable to select for these traits in conventional fields even if the selection target is organic agriculture. On the contrary, selection for grain yield, test weight, leaf-inclination and vigorous growth should be done later in the target environment. It was concluded that the selecting environment has measurable effects on the performance of bread wheat varieties. Our results could help organic breeders in their selection work, especially in the continental climatic zone of Europe
Technology in Catholic Schools: Are Schools Using the Technology They Have?
This article examines important questions related to the use of computer technology in Catholic schools. Under consideration are issues related to how teachers use the Internet in classrooms, communicate with parents, and design lessons with technological support. Differences in computer use between high-poverty and low-poverty schools are also examined
Protective Role of Superoxide Dismutase against Diabetogenic Drugs
Copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD) is present in relatively high concentrations in the β-cells of human islets. The activity of the extracted enzyme is partially inhibited upon incubation with the diabetogenic drugs alloxan, streptozotocin, or Vacor. The role of this enzyme in protecting β-cells against chemically induced diabetes was further investigated. Incubation of intact canine islets with alloxan (0.2 mg/ml) and 4 mM glucose decreased the insulin secretory response by 87% during subsequent exposure to 28 mM glucose. Concomitantly the SOD-specific activity (units of enzyme activity per milligram immunoreactive SOD) decreased 50% in alloxan-exposed islets. When islets were protected from alloxan toxicity by including 28 mM glucose with alloxan, the insulin secretory response and SOD specific activity remained identical to controls. Thus, SOD specific activity correlates with maintenance of β-cell function. To test the effectiveness of SOD against streptozotocin in vitro, canine islets were incubated 10 min with or without streptozotocin (0.1 mg/ml) with 4 mM glucose; their functional integrity was tested subsequently as the insulin secretory response to 28 mM glucose. Exposure to streptozotocin alone decreased the response by 70%; inclusion of SOD (1.5 mg/ml) before and during exposure to streptozotocin completely prevented this effect. Cyanide-inactivated SOD was not effective. The potential of SOD to prevent streptozotocin-induced diabetes was tested in rats in vivo. SOD injected 10 s or 50 min before streptozotocin prevented or significantly attenuated diabetes. Injection of SOD and streptozotocin simultaneously was much less effective, and cyanide-inactivated SOP was ineffective. No protection was afforded by injection of SOD 12 or 24 h before streptozotocin. Our results support hypotheses that (a) oxygen radicals mediate the β-cell toxicity of both alloxan and streptozotocin, and (b) β-cells may be particularly vulnerable to oxygen radical damage
There\u27s More to Young Adult Unemployment Than Mental Health: What Else to Look For [English and Spanish versions]
A Spanish translation of this publication is available to download under Additional Files below.
High unemployment among young adults with serious mental health conditions (SMHCs) should not only be attributed to their mental health conditions. Research should take an intersectional approach where, in addition to looking at mental health condition factors, other indicators of social and demographic inequalities are also taken into account
Visualizing the Template of a Chaotic Attractor
Chaotic attractors are solutions of deterministic processes, of which the
topology can be described by templates. We consider templates of chaotic
attractors bounded by a genus-1 torus described by a linking matrix. This
article introduces a novel and unique tool to validate a linking matrix, to
optimize the compactness of the corresponding template and to draw this
template. The article provides a detailed description of the different
validation steps and the extraction of an order of crossings from the linking
matrix leading to a template of minimal height. Finally, the drawing process of
the template corresponding to the matrix is saved in a Scalable Vector Graphics

Attitudes Towards Guns: Associations with Alcohol Use and Impulsive Behaviors
This study was an investigation of the association of attitudes toward guns with self-reports of alcohol/drug use, and impulsivity. Participants included 160 male and female high school students, who completed five questions regarding attitudes toward guns, in addition to questions about alcohol/drug use. Data were analyzed using t-tests. Males were more likely to feel that a home was safer with a gun. Feeling positively about a gun was associated with alcohol use in males and impulsive, aggressive behavior in males and females. A greater understanding of attitudes toward guns must take into account gender, alcohol use, and impulsive and aggressive tendencies
