Neste artigo, o autor tece algumas reflexões sobre a possibilidade da utilização harmoniosa do programa etnomatemática e da metodologia da modelagem matemática na educação matemática para o ensino e aprendizagem em matemática. A modelagem atua como uma ponte entre a etnomatemática e a matemática acadêmica para a ação pedagógica que será requerida nas atividades presentes na sociedade contemporânea. Deve-se ter consciência de que cada grupo cultural desenvolveu um conjunto de ideias matemáticas próprias; dentre as quais se destacam algumas ferramentas básicas que são utilizadas no processo da modelagem

The application of ethnomathematical techniques and tools of modeling allow us to examine systems taken from reality and give us insight into forms of mathematics done in a holistic way. The pedagogical approach that connects a diversity of cultural forms of mathematics is best represented through ethnomodeling, which is a process of translation and elaboration of problems and the questions taken from real world contexts. Seen in this way, we would like to broaden the discussion of possibilities for the inclusion of ethnomathematics and associated ethnomodeling perspectives that respect the social diversity of distinct cultural groups with guarantees for the development of understanding different ways of doing mathematics through dialogue and respect

Since quilts may be considered as cultural artifacts as well as artistic and mathematical manifestations and expressions of the daily life of slaves, who were part of a particular cultural group. La historia de las matemáticas en el currículo para la formación de profesores de matemáticas

En este artículo se presentan las justificaciones y las alternativas a la utilización de la Historia de las Matemáticas en el currículo para la formación profesores de Matemáticas. Fueron analizadas las respuestas de los participantes en la investigación a una encuesta para la evaluación de la asignatura en la cual fueron realizadas investigaciones y presentaciones de seminarios como instrumentos de evaluación y de aprendizaje. Los datos cualitativos y cuantitativos fueron colectados, analizados concomitantemente, de modo igualitario en el método mixto QUAN+QUAL que posibilitó complementariedad de los datos analizados, para la obtención de informaciones completas y complejas en este estudio. En general, los resultados apuntaron a que el abordaje metodológico y evaluativo en este estudio contribuyeron para el aprendizaje de los contenidos relacionados con la Historia de las Matemáticas de modo eficiente, constante y continuo

Un estudio etnomatemático de las esteras (Pop) sagradas de los mayas

El contexto holístico de la etnomatemáticas busca estudiar, reflejar, y comprender las relaciones existentes entre los componentes del grupo cultural a través del análisis constante de cada individuo en el propio ambiente cultural. En este contexto, los mayas utilizaron padrones geométricos llamados de esteras o Pop que se tornaron sagrados. Esos padrones eran esculpidos en piedras, utilizados como joyas y dibujados en tejidos. Algunos objetos encontrados en México y en América Central muestran que los sacerdotes mayas tomaban ciertas decisiones basadas en las esteras sagradas, pues ellas contenían significados sagrados basados en valores finales de cada padrón. Los autores demuestran aspectos etnomatemáticos de la cultura maya que están basados en las pesquisas realizadas sobre las ideas y practicas matemáticas de este pueblo

Three approaches in the research field of ethnomodeling: emic (local), etic (global), and dialogical (glocal)

The acquisition of both emic (local) and etic (global) knowledge is an alternative goal for the implementation of ethnomodeling research. Emic knowledge is essential for an intuitive and empathic understanding of mathematical ideas, procedures, and practices developed by the members of distinct cultural groups. It is essential for conducting effective ethnographic fieldwork. Furthermore, emic knowledge is a valuable source of inspiration for etic hypotheses. Etic knowledge is essential for cross-cultural comparisons, which are based on the components of ethnology. In this regard, such comparisons demand standard units and categories to facilitate communication. Dialogical (glocal) is a third approach for ethnomodeling research that makes use of both emic and etic knowledge traditions through processes of dialogue and interaction. Ethnomodeling is defined as the study of mathematical phenomena within a culture because it is a social construct and is culturally bound. Finally, the objective of this article is to show how we have come to use a combination of emic, etic and dialogical (glocal) approaches in our work in the area of ethnomodeling, which contributes to the acquisition of a more complete understanding of mathematical practices developed by the members of distinct cultural groups

Symmetrical freedom quilts: the ethnomathematics of ways of communication, liberation, and art

Symmetrical Freedom Quilts may be considered as links between mathematics, history, ethnomathematics, and the art of quilting. A quilt theme is a pedagogical way to integrate mathematics, art, and history in an interdisciplinary approach. This article combines an ethnomathematical-historical perspective by elaborating a history project related to the Underground Railroad. This work will allow teachers to develop classroom projects that help students to better understand geometry, especially concepts of symmetry and transformations. One of the objectives of this project is to stimulate student’s creativity and interest, because quilts may be considered as cultural and mathematical expressions of student’s daily life

Etnomatemática e modelagem: a análise de um problema retórico babilônio

Nessa investigação, a modelagem matemática foi utilizada como um processo que providencia a tradução de um sistema, que representa um aspecto do conhecimento matemático babilônio, para a matemática acadêmica. No programa etnomatemática, a modelagem pode ser descrita como uma linguagem utilizada para traduzir e descrever, matematicamente, os sistemas retirados do cotidiano de grupos culturais distintos. Assim, a ênfase dessa investigação está direcionada para o aspecto etnomatemático e retórico da resolução de situações-problema relacionadas com a área de figuras retangulares, que foi amplamente utilizada pelos babilônios na antiguidade para resolver problemas enfrentados no cotidiano. Outro aspecto importante desse estudo é a tradução dessa prática para a matemática acadêmica com a utilização dos recursos e técnicas da modelagem buscando o seu relacionamento com os objetivos do programa etnomatemática
