Primeiro registro de epidemias causadas pelo vírus Oropouche nos Estados do Maranhão e Goiás, Brasil
The authors describe the occurrence of outbreaks caused by Oropouche virus (ORO) in the states of Maranhão and Goiás, Brazil in 1988. 36 strains of the virus were obtained from the intracerebral inoculation of the blood of 120 patients into 2-3 day-old infant mice. The illness was characterized by headache, fever, pain in the muscles, joints and back, photophobia, retrobulbar pain, nausea and dizziness. 128 of 197 people examined in Porto Franco, MA, had hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies to the agent, while 106 of them had IgM antibodies by MAC ELISA test. All age groups were infected, although the incidence was higher among who had 10 to 19 years old. There was no difference, in relation to sex infections. Recurrence of symptoms was reported in 56% of sick people. Mice inoculated with 3624 Culicoides paraensis (Ceratopogonidae) and 1970 Culex (Cux.) quinquefasciatus (Culicidae) collected in Porto Franco resulted in one single isolation of ORO virus, from the Culicoides. These are the first confirmed cases of ORO infection in Maranhão and Goiás states.
Characterization of the Gamboa virus serogroup (Orthobunyavirus genus, Peribunyaviridae family)
Comprehensive comparative phylogenetic analyses were performed on 17 Gamboa serogroup viruses (GAMSVs) from distinct geographic regions in the Americas and other representative members of the genus Orthobunyavirus (Peribunyaviridae), based on small (S), medium (M), and large (L) open reading frame full-length and partial sequences. Genome characterization showed that the GAMSVs divide into four clades or genotypes. The GAMSVs have a genetic organization similar to other orthobunyaviruses, except that they have a larger NSm protein than other orthobunyaviruses. A serosurvey for Gamboa virus antibodies was performed in plasma from birds, other wild animals, and humans living around the Tucuruí hydroelectric dam in Pará state, northern Brazil, a known focus of GAMSV activity. Newborn chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) were experimentally infected with a GAMSV, and the pathogenesis is described. Histopathological changes were primarily in the lungs and liver. Also, a review of the ecology of the GAMSVs in the Americas is included. In sum, this study presents the genomic and evolutionary characterization of the Gamboa group and the potential model of pathogenesis, which would be helpful for diagnostic purposes, epidemiology, and immunopathogenesis studies

Original source: Isolated by Belem Virus Laboratory from whole blood of apparently well young male Proechimys guyannensis 1 collected on 19 April 1966 in Utinga forest, Lat. 1°28'S,Long. 48°27'W. Habitat: Floor of watershed forest. Storage: Frozen at -60°C.
Method of isolation in laboratory: Blood inoculated ic into infant mice on 20 April 1966.
Validity of isolation: Reisolation not tried and presence of homologous antibody in source animal not tested. However, four more strains isolated from Proechimys guyannensis captured in the same area.
Properties of virus: Physical: No data. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 1:2 ether; control titer 103.8, after-treatment titer 101.3. Sensitive to 1:1,000 sodium deoxycholate; control titer 105.0, after-treatment titer 101.0. Antigenic: Hemagglutinin detected using infected suckling mouse brains extracted with sucrose-acetone, treated with protamine sulfate, and tested with goose erythrocytes at pH 5.8 through 6.2 and at room temperature. Optimum pH was 6.0

Belém, PA, Brasil.Serological studies (complement-fixation, immunofluorescent and plaque reduction
neutralization) were carried out with 50 vertebrate rhabdoviruses to determine their
antigenic relationships. On the basis of these studies, an antigenic classification ofrhabdoviruses
infecting terrestrial vertebrates is proposed. This classification includesthree
major and four minor serogroups. Several new members of the vesicular
stomatitis serogroup were identified
