Support to parents with children with learning disablities

    Get PDF
This dissertation attempts to understand what support from the school parents would most value when their child has been diagnosed with a learning disability. The method employed was qualitative in nature, using eight in-depth interviews with the mothers. The interviews confirmed that parents experience emotions similar to those when grieving. They also tend to feel isolated from their communities. Before embarking on a support program the school needs to recognize the depth of these emotions. The interviews also revealed that parents require timeous communication from the teacher. Parents concerns should be taken seriously or time goes by without the disability being attended to. The terminology used by professionals is often not fully understood by parents, and this causes them to feel unsure of how therapy is helping their child in the classroom and what its value is. Various guidelines are offered to support parents with regard to the above-mentioned aspects.Educational StudiesM. Ed. (Guidance and Counselling

An Anatomic Study on the Overlap Patterns of Structural Components in the Keystone Area in Noses of Koreans

ObjectivesThe keystone area has critical importance in maintaining the stability of the nasal dorsum. However, overlap patterns between structural components in the keystone area have rarely been studied, especially in the noses of Koreans.MethodsDissections were performed on 18 cadaveric noses. The length and width of the structural components in the keystone area were measured. The shape of the caudal margin of the nasal bone and the overlap patterns between the upper lateral cartilage and the nasal bone were classified.ResultsThe shape of the caudal margin of the nasal bone were classified as follows: type A, curvilinear margin; type B, paramedian retractions or "M" shape; type C, elongated midline; and type D, retracted midline. The overlap area between the upper lateral cartilage and the nasal bone was classified as follows: type Ao, crescent shape; type Bo, short midline extension; and type Co, long midline extension. The cephalocaudal length of the overlap area between the upper lateral cartilage and the nasal bone was 4-10 mm (mean, 7 mm) in the midline, and 0-7 mm (mean, 3.1 mm) in the paramedian area. The overlap width of the upper lateral cartilage with the nasal bone was 8-14 mm (mean, 9.7 mm).ConclusionThe overlap pattern of the structural components in the keystone area is variable. Therefore, a thorough understanding and a cautious evaluation of the relationships of these components before and during surgery is important in performing safe and effective nasal procedures

Investigating performance improvements in wireless networks using probabilistic graphical models

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2016.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Probabilistic Graphical Models (PGMs) have proven to be a powerful and effective tool for predicting the behaviour of probabilistic systems. Their applicability for improving the performance of wireless networks, where most strategies are probabilistically founded, is therefore worth exploring. PGMs can infer states and conditions within the network and allow protocols to act accordingly. However, as this implies decision-making under uncertainty, investigating the application of PGMs for this purpose would have merit. In this work, we create an effective method for making decisions under uncertainty by expanding the current theory of strong junction trees to allow for loopy decision cluster graphs. However, similarly to the behaviour of loopy cluster graphs, this method also leads to imprecise probabilities and utilities, and sub-optimal decision strategies. We created 3 PGM-augmented Round Robin Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols by using different PGMs to determine which slave node the master node should poll next. This resulted in reduced latency for packets during unequal traffic loads. Furthermore, we created a PGM-augmented Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) MAC protocol by using a PGM in order to estimate the number of contending nodes and allowing the node to change the length of its contention window accordingly.
