Precision spectroscopy with two correlated atoms
We discuss techniques that allow for long coherence times in laser
spectroscopy experiments with two trapped ions. We show that for this purpose
not only entangled ions prepared in decoherence-free subspaces can be used but
also a pair of ions that are not entangled but subject to the same kind of
phase noise. We apply this technique to a measurement of the electric
quadrupole moment of the 3d D5/2 state of 40Ca+ and to a measurement of the
linewidth of an ultrastable laser exciting a pair of 40Ca+ ions

Randomly Crosslinked Macromolecular Systems: Vulcanisation Transition to and Properties of the Amorphous Solid State
As Charles Goodyear discovered in 1839, when he first vulcanised rubber, a
macromolecular liquid is transformed into a solid when a sufficient density of
permanent crosslinks is introduced at random. At this continuous equi- librium
phase transition, the liquid state, in which all macromolecules are
delocalised, is transformed into a solid state, in which a nonzero fraction of
macromolecules have spontaneously become localised. This solid state is a most
unusual one: localisation occurs about mean positions that are distributed
homogeneously and randomly, and to an extent that varies randomly from monomer
to monomer. Thus, the solid state emerging at the vulcanisation transition is
an equilibrium amorphous solid state: it is properly viewed as a solid state
that bears the same relationship to the liquid and crystalline states as the
spin glass state of certain magnetic systems bears to the paramagnetic and
ferromagnetic states, in the sense that, like the spin glass state, it is
diagnosed by a subtle order parameter.
In this review we give a detailed exposition of a theoretical approach to the
physical properties of systems of randomly, permanently crosslinked
macromolecules. Our primary focus is on the equilibrium properties of such

Correlation effects in single-particle overlap functions and one-nucleon removal reactions
Single-particle overlap functions and spectroscopic factors are calculated on
the basis of the one-body density matrices (ODM) obtained for the nucleus
employing different approaches to account for the effects of
correlations. The calculations use the relationship between the overlap
functions related to bound states of the (A-1)-particle system and the ODM for
the ground state of the A-particle system. The resulting bound-state overlap
functions are compared and tested in the description of the experimental data

Repeated-root cyclic and negacyclic codes over a finite chain ring
AbstractWe show that repeated-root cyclic codes over a finite chain ring are in general not principally generated. Repeated-root negacyclic codes are principally generated if the ring is a Galois ring with characteristic a power of 2. For any other finite chain ring they are in general not principally generated. We also prove results on the structure, cardinality and Hamming distance of repeated-root cyclic and negacyclic codes over a finite chain ring
Follow-up infarct volume as a mediator of endovascular treatment effect on functional outcome in ischaemic stroke
Objective: The putative mechanism for the favourable effect of endovascular treatment (EVT) on functional outcome after acute ischaemic stroke is preventing follow-up infarct volume (FIV) progression. We aimed to assess to what extent difference in FIV explains the effect of EVT on functional outcome in a randomised trial of EVT versus no EVT (MR CLEAN). Methods: FIV was assessed on non-contrast CT scan 5–7 days after stroke. Functional outcome was the score on the modified Rankin Scale at 3 months. We tested the causal pathway from intervention, via FIV to functional outcome with a mediation model, using linear and ordinal regression, adjusted for relevant baseline covariates, including stroke severity. Explained effect was assessed by taking the ratio of the log odds ratios of treatment with and without adjustment for FIV. Results: Of the 500 patients included in MR CLEAN, 60 died and four patients underwent hemicraniectomy before FIV was assessed, leaving 436 patients for analysis. Patients in the intervention group had better functional outcomes (adjusted common odds ratio (acOR) 2.30 (95% CI 1.62–3.26) than controls and smaller FIV (median 53 vs. 81 ml) (difference 28 ml; 95% CI 13–41). Smaller FIV was associated with better outcome (acOR per 10 ml 0.60, 95% CI 0.52–0.68). After adjustment for FIV the effect of intervention on functional outcome decreased but remained substantial (acOR 2.05, 95% CI 1.44–2.91). This implies that preventing FIV progression explains 14% (95% CI 0–34) of the beneficial effect of EVT on outcome. Conclusion: The effect of EVT on FIV explains only part of the treatment effect on functional outcome. Key Points: • Endovascular treatment in acute ischaemic stroke patients prevents progression of follow-up infarct volume on non-contrast CT at 5–7 days.• Follow-up infarct volume was related to functional outcome, but only explained a modest part of the effect of intervention on functional outcome.• A large proportion of treatment effect on functional outcome remains unexplained, suggesting FIV alone cannot be used as an early surrogate imaging marker of functional outcome

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 199 patients for whom thin-section NCCT and CTA within 30 minutes from each other were available in the Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial of Endovascular Treatment for Acute ischemic stroke in the Netherlands (MR CLEAN) study. Are Insider Sales Always Bad News? Evidence On Large Sales By Key Insiders
Investors often scrutinize stock trades by corporate insiders, hoping to infer the nature of any privileged information which may have motivated the trades. Conventional wisdom suggests that sales of stock by insiders reveal negative information; this interpretation is supported by empirical work such as the series of papers by Seyhun. However, this common interpretation fails to distinguish between sales by atomistic insiders and sales by controlling blockholders. In this paper, I present evidence which suggests that sales by controlling insiders should not be considered bad news. Using both a series of logit regressions and traditional event-study tests, I examine the relationship between a firm's performance and the willingness of its controlling shareholder to sell a significant proportion of his shares. I find that firm value is just as likely to rise on the news of large insider sales as it is to fall, so that large sales need not imply negative private information. One possible explanation for a positive response to a controlling blockholder's large sale is that such a sale makes the insider vulnerable to meaningful oversight by outside shareholders. Thus, a large sale may be a signal of the insider's willingness to expose himself to shareholder monitoring and discipline. However, regardless of the interpretation, the empirical evidence presented in the paper forces the conclusion that it is inappropriate to interpret all insider sales as bad news: insider sales occur in a variety of contexts, and creating buy/sell rules which ignore those contexts is simplistic and erroneous
