The symbolic sculptures of John Robinson

    Get PDF
The aim of this article is to explore the questions of ‘Knowledge: representation and interpretation’ in the context of the Universe Series of Symbolic Sculptures by John Robinson. The intention is to point out some questions, and ask for help in pursuing them. One reason for this article is that in the broad sweep of this volume it seemed reasonable for art to have some place. Certainly an artist is involved with representation and interpretation. This is particularly clear in Robinson’s work, with his notion and use of‘symbol’ which we will explore later. This leaves the open question of whether we should call the work of an artist ‘knowledge’. Asking this question is in no way intended to devalue art, and it may be even be doing the opposite. It is partly a question of use of words

Mathematical Structure: Knowledge, Representation and Interpretation

    Get PDF
The main theme of this article is to show the abstraction processes of mathematics allow hierarchies of structure, in which for example a ‘comparison’ becomes an object and so allows for methods of comparison themselves to be compared. Further, a representation of an object need not be unique, and the comparison of representations is important for our understanding and use of an abstraction process

Do 2 with VCU: A Community Engagement Initiative

    Get PDF
Do 2 with VCU will be a day-long Expo highlighting volunteer activities and opportunities with up to 100 community partners. VCU faculty and staff will be encouraged to collaborate with these community partners by using their 16 hours of community service leave provided by VCU. The Expo will culminate with a Keynote Speaker for this inaugural event. This year we have selected author and activist, Elaine Brown; she will deliver an address on the importance of community activism and service which will be marketed to the greater Richmond area. This project was designed around Theme IV of the VCU Quest for Distinction: “Become a national model for community engagement and regional impact.

The Morality of Heart Transplants: A Debate

    Get PDF
Over a year has passed since the first heart transplant was accomplished, and in that short year, many questions concerning ethics, law, and theology have come forth to be debated. So many questions exist that a very exhaustive study would be needed; however, three main considerations will give a basic understanding of the implications of heart transplants. The Religion and Philosophy Honors Seminar has been exploring heart transplants this past semester. This paper is a summary of the three main issues concerning heart transplants with emphasis upon the theological and philosophical implications involved

The Predictable Relationship between Demographic Factors and Persistence of First-Year Students at a Historically Black College & University

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship and predictability of demographic factors, on the persistence rates among first-year, full-time, four-year degree-seeking students at a Historically Black College and University. Specifically, this study focused on the predictive power of demographic factors (gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status), and (high school GPA and number of hours passed) on the persistence rates among first-year, full-time, four-year degree-seeking students attending a Historically Black College and University. The study approached the research questions from a correlational research design perspective. This type of research design was the most appropriate for this study because the researcher examined the predictable relationship between two or more predictor variables and one criterion variable (Babbie, 2014). This approach is centered on gathering statistical data. Further, this type of research method enables the researcher the opportunity to analyze the linear combination effects of the predictor variables on the criterion variable (Gay et al., 2016)
