On the umbilic set of immersed surfaces in three-dimensional space forms

We prove that under some assumptions on the mean curvature the set of umbilical points of an immersed surface in a 33-dimensional space form has positive measure. In case of an immersed sphere our result can be seen as a generalization of the celebrated Hopf theorem

Georeferencing accuracy analysis of a single worldview-3 image collected over Milan

    Get PDF
The use of rational functions has become a standard for very high-resolution satellite imagery (VHRSI). On the other hand, the overall geolocalization accuracy via direct georeferencing from on board navigation components is much worse than image ground sampling distance (predicted < 3.5 m CE90 for WorldView-3, whereas GSD = 0.31 m for panchromatic images at nadir). This paper presents the georeferencing accuracy results obtained from a single WorldView-3 image processed with a bias compensated RPC camera model. Orientation results for an image collected over Milan are illustrated and discussed for both direct and indirect georeferencing strategies as well as different bias correction parameters estimated from a set of ground control points. Results highlight that the use of a correction based on two shift parameters is optimal for the considered dataset

What Is the Slope of this Pitch?

    Get PDF
The FIFA Quality Concept (2012) requires a slope lower than 1% for soccer fields (<0.5% recommended). On the other hand, the use of a single constraint is not sufficient to capture the singularities and local anomalies of the pitch. This paper presents a procedure able to (1) reconstruct the entire pitch surface and (2) analyze its shape. The method can be intended as a multi-step methodology where three-dimensional coordinates are captured with accurate and rapid surveying techniques, a model of the pitch is extracted with automated techniques for data interpolation based on non-uniform rational B-spline curves and surfaces, and raster algebra provides a detailed and exhaustive visualization of slope distribution and profile curvature

Fisheye Photogrammetry to Survey Narrow Spaces in Architecture and a Hypogea Environment

    Get PDF
Nowadays, the increasing computation power of commercial grade processors has actively led to a vast spreading of image-based reconstruction software as well as its application in different disciplines. As a result, new frontiers regarding the use of photogrammetry in a vast range of investigation activities are being explored. This paper investigates the implementation of fisheye lenses in non-classical survey activities along with the related problematics. Fisheye lenses are outstanding because of their large field of view. This characteristic alone can be a game changer in reducing the amount of data required, thus speeding up the photogrammetric process when needed. Although they come at a cost, field of view (FOV), speed and manoeuvrability are key to the success of those optics as shown by two of the presented case studies: the survey of a very narrow spiral staircase located in the Duomo di Milano and the survey of a very narrow hypogea structure in Rome. A third case study, which deals with low-cost sensors, shows the metric evaluation of a commercial spherical camera equipped with fisheye lenses

Inflammatory cells, apoptosis and Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in atherosclerosis

    Get PDF
Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP), chromosomal alterations and apoptosis were suggested as contributing factors in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Early (EP) and unstable plaques (UP) were studied in order to assess infiltrate composition, the apoptotic index, chromosome 7 stability and to investigate the concurrent presence of CP in EP and UP. Paraffin embedded sections of three iliac arteries and four aortas from young donors (EP), and four coronaries and nine carotid arteries (UP) were used. Aside from histological techniques, immunophenotypification for macrophages, T and B cells, smooth muscle and endothelial cells; FISH and DNA nick end labeling were performed. The amplifications with PCR for CP infection were negative in all specimens. In the EP, a focal myointimal thickening with foam cells and scarce smooth muscle cells was observed. Macrophages were most frequent in the intima (10.8%) while T and B cells were found in 2.3 and 1.5%. In the UP a thin cap covering a lipid-rich core with widespread vascularization and with severe luminal obstruction was observed. Macrophages were increased (21%), and T (1.5%) and B cells (3.5%) in the caps and inner areas of the lipid cores. At these sites, the FISH showed trisomy and tetrasomy of chromosome 7 and apoptosis was very frequent (10-30%). Macrophages in intimal lesions is one of the most prominent, consistent and permanent features in EP, and an elevated apoptotic index and chromosome 7 instability might contribute to evolution from stable to complicated plaques, while CP seems to play no role. However, further studies are needed with more cases to confirm this last observation. Copyright (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.Fil: Matturri, Luigi. Università degli Studi di Milano; Italia. Monitoring riverbank erosion in mountain catchments using terrestrial laser scanning

    Get PDF
Sediment yield is a key factor in river basins management due to the various and adverse consequences that erosion and sediment transport in rivers may have on the environment. Although various contributions can be found in the literature about sediment yield modeling and bank erosion monitoring, the link between weather conditions, river flow rate and bank erosion remains scarcely known. Thus, a basin scale assessment of sediment yield due to riverbank erosion is an objective hard to be reached. In order to enhance the current knowledge in this field, a monitoring method based on high resolution 3D model reconstruction of riverbanks, surveyed by multi-temporal terrestrial laser scanning, was applied to four banks in Val Tartano, Northern Italy. Six data acquisitions over one year were taken, with the aim to better understand the erosion processes and their triggering factors by means of more frequent observations compared to usual annual campaigns. The objective of the research is to address three key questions concerning bank erosion: "how" erosion happens, "when" during the year and "how much" sediment is eroded. The method proved to be effective and able to measure both eroded and deposited volume in the surveyed area. Finally an attempt to extrapolate basin scale volume for bank erosion is presented
