Maternal Binge Eating Disorder (BED) has been suggested to be associated with poor parent–infant interactions during feeding and with children’s emotional and behavioral problems during infancy (Blissett and Haycraft, 2011). The role of fathers has received increasing consideration in recent years, yet the research has not focused on interactional patterns between fathers with BED and their children. The present study aimed to longitudinally investigate the influence of BED diagnosis, in one or both parents, on parent–infant feeding interactions and on children’s emotional–behavioral functioning. 612 subjects (408 parents; 204 children), recruited in mental health services and pre-schools in Central Italy, were divided into four groups: Group 1 included families with both parents diagnosed with BED, Group 2 and 3 included families with one parent diagnosed with BED, Group 0 was a healthy control. The assessment took place at T1 (18 months of age of children) and T2 (36 months of age of children): feeding interactions were assessed through the Scale for the Assessment of Feeding Interactions (SVIA) while child emotional–behavioral functioning was evaluated with the Child Behavior Check-List (CBCL). When compared to healthy controls, the groups with one or both parents diagnosed with BED showed higher scores on the SVIA and on the CBCL internalizing and externalizing scales, indicating poorer adult–child feeding interactions and higher emotional–behavioral difficulties. A direct influence of parental psychiatric diagnosis on the quality of mother–infant and father–infant interactions was also found, both at T1 and T2. Moreover, dyadic feeding interactions mediated the influence of parental diagnosis on children’s psychological functioning. The presence of BED diagnosis in one or both parents seems to influence the severity of maladaptive parent–infant exchanges during feeding and offspring’s emotional–behavioral problems over time, consequently affecting different areas of children’s psychological functioning. This is the first study to demonstrate the specific effects of maternal and paternal BED on infant development. These results could inform prevention and intervention programs in families with one or both parents diagnosed with BED

Does alexithymia have a mediating effect between impulsivity and emotional-behavioral functioning in adolescents with binge eating disorder?

Objective: Binge eating Disorder (BeD) has recently been included in the Dsm-5. like many other eating disorder symptoms, BED is often present in adolescence. No studies have specifically investigated the influence of impulsivity and alexithymia on the emotional-behavioural functioning of adolescents diagnosed with BeD. Method: in this study, we recruited n = 162 adolescents (age range: 14-18) and divided them into two groups: 78 adolescents diagnosed with BeD, according to the Dsm-5 criteria (group A), and 84 healthy controls (group B). participants completed the youth self-report (ysr/11-18), the toronto Alexithymia scale (tAs-20) and the Barratt impulsiveness scale (Bis-11). Results: the results showed that group A had higher scores of alexithymia, impulsivity and maladaptive emotionalbehavioural functioning than Group B. Furthermore, alexithymia had a mediating effect on the relationship between impulsivity and emotional-behavioural functioning. Conclusions: These results allow us to hypothesise that alexithymia is a key variable influencing the emotional and behavioural problems of adolescents affected by BED. Our data confirms the previous studies underlining the association of impulsivity and alexithymia with the diagnosis of BeD in adolescents, and our study contributes to the previous literature, emphasising the central role of alexithymia in the mediating effect between impulsivity and emotional and behavioural problems. these results suggest the importance of promoting prevention and treatment polices focused on alexithymia

The single machine earliness and tardiness scheduling problem: lower bounds and a branch-and-bound algorithm

Get PDF
This paper addresses the single machine scheduling problem with a common due date aiming to minimize earliness and tardiness penalties. Due to its complexity, most of the previous studies in the literature deal with this problem using heuristics and metaheuristics approaches. With the intention of contributing to the study of this problem, a branch-and-bound algorithm is proposed. Lower bounds and pruning rules that exploit properties of the problem are introduced. The proposed approach is examined through a computational comparative study with 280 problems involving different due date scenarios. In addition, the values of optimal solutions for small problems from a known benchmark are provided.Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo - FAPESP[06/03496-3]""Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico"" - CNPq[486124/2007-0]""Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico"" - CNPq[307399/2006-0

References are listed under the heading(s) of the chapter(s) in which they are cited. The idea in duplicating some references in this way is to enable readers interested in one particular chapter, for example the informal sector, to be readily able to identify all the references made in that chapter. The 1993 SNA and two compendia are listed in the first section labelled General. The lists also include some references that are not explicitly cited in the Handbook but that provide useful background material or elaboration of the text. The documents are in English except where otherwise noted

The management of knee osteoarthritis in elderly: results from a national survey compared to ESCEO guidelines

OBJECTIVE: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative and inflammatory disease with a rising incidence and prevalence worldwide. Various therapeutic strategies have been proposed over time, depending on the degrees of severity and usually based on individual clinical practice. However, several European and international scientific societies published guidelines, to provide practical clinical stepwise guidance and to facilitate individualized therapeutic decisions regarding the management of KOA. The aim of this prospective multicentre observational study was to describe the real outpatient territorial management of patients with knee osteoarthritis and to compare it with the ESCEO guidelines, in order to identify operational strategies for delivering patient-centric care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The educational project was divided in three modules: the first and the last through webinar; the second held in daily practice. The participants had to register structured observations. RESULTS: The project has been joined by 155 discussants, and the 2,656 observations collected allowed the understanding of the most common therapeutic approaches for knee osteoarthritis on the Italian territory. CONCLUSIONS: The educational project proved to be useful for updating on the state of the art of therapeutic management of knee osteoarthritis, and to increase expertise in detecting prevention and treatment strategies according to ESCEO guidelines to apply in the Real-Life context

State of art in intra-articular hip injections of different medications for osteoarthritis: a systematic review

Background: Intra-articular hip injections for osteoarthritis represent a useful instrument to reduce pain and disability in the common clinical practice. Several medications can be injected locally with different level of evidence-based efficacy. Objective: The objective of this systematic review is to investigate the effectiveness of intra-articular injections of different medications or substances for the pain treatment and the management of disability in subjects affected by hip osteoarthritis. Methods: Two reviewers selected independently randomised controlled trials published in the last 10 years, using PubMed and Scopus databases. The risk of bias was evaluated with Cochrane library assessment tool. Results: 12 randomised controlled trials have been selected. We found 8 papers comparing hyaluronic acid with platelet rich plasma, with corticosteroids and with saline solution; 1 paper compares two types of hyaluronic acid with different molecular weights; 3 papers study the effects of corticosteroids alone or compared to ketorolac or saline solution. Conclusions: The studies reviewed were heterogeneous regarding sample size, level of osteoarthritis, evaluated with Kellegren-Lawrence score, medications used and follow up timings. However, we have observed that intra-articular injections of platelet-rich plasma seem to decrease pain at short term and disability at long term, in patients affected by hip osteoarthritis better than hyaluronic acid. The association of hyaluronic acid and corticosteroids could give better results compared to hyaluronic acid alone, while the use of intra-articular ketorolac and saline solution requires more studies

Relax-and-fix heuristics applied to a real-world lot-sizing and scheduling problem in the personal care consumer goods industry

This paper addresses an integrated lot-sizing and scheduling problem in the industry of consumer goods for personal care, a very competitive market in which the good customer service level and the cost management show up in the competition for the clients. In this research, a complex operational environment composed of unrelated parallel machines with limited production capacity and sequence-dependent setup times and costs is studied. There is also a limited finished-goods storage capacity, a characteristic not found in the literature. Backordering is allowed but it is extremely undesirable. The problem is described through a mixed integer linear programming formulation. Since the problem is NP-hard, relax-and-fix heuristics with hybrid partitioning strategies are investigated. Computational experiments with randomly generated and also with real-world instances are presented. The results show the efficacy and efficiency of the proposed approaches. Compared to current solutions used by the company, the best proposed strategies yield results with substantially lower costs, primarily from the reduction in inventory levels and better allocation of production batches on the machines

Little Ado about Everything: η\etaCDM, a Cosmological Model with Fluctuation-driven Acceleration at Late Times

[abridged] We propose a model of the Universe (dubbed η\etaCDM) featuring a stochastic evolution of the cosmological quantities, that is meant to render small deviations from homogeneity/isotropy on scales of 30−50 h−130-50\, h^{-1} Mpc at late cosmic times, associated to the emergence of the cosmic web. Specifically, we prescribe that the behavior of the matter/radiation energy densities in different patches of the Universe with such a size can be effectively described by a stochastic version of the mass-energy evolution equation. The latter includes an appropriate noise term that statistically accounts for local fluctuations due to inhomogeneities, anisotropic stresses and matter flows. The evolution of the different patches as a function of cosmic time is rendered via the diverse realizations of the noise term; meanwhile, at any given cosmic time, sampling the ensemble of patches will originate a nontrivial spatial distribution of the cosmological quantities. The overall behavior of the Universe will be obtained by averaging over the patch ensemble. We assume a physically reasonable parameterization of the noise term, gauging it against a wealth of cosmological datasets. We find that, with respect to standard Λ\LambdaCDM, the ensemble-averaged cosmic dynamics in the η\etaCDM model is substantially altered in three main respects: (i) an accelerated expansion is enforced at late cosmic times without the need for any additional exotic component (e.g., dark energy); (ii) the spatial curvature can stay small even in a low-density Universe; (iii) matter can acquire an effective negative pressure at late times. We provide predictions for the variance of the cosmological quantities among different patches of the Universe at late cosmic times. Finally, we show that in η\etaCDM the Hubble-tension is solved, and the cosmic coincidence problem is relieved without invoking the anthropic principle.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, typos corrected.
