    Is Hilbert space discrete?

    We show that discretization of spacetime naturally suggests discretization of Hilbert space itself. Specifically, in a universe with a minimal length (for example, due to quantum gravity), no experiment can exclude the possibility that Hilbert space is discrete. We give some simple examples involving qubits and the Schrodinger wavefunction, and discuss implications for quantum information and quantum gravity.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 1 figur

    Clinical BERTScore: An Improved Measure of Automatic Speech Recognition Performance in Clinical Settings

    Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in medical contexts has the potential to save time, cut costs, increase report accuracy, and reduce physician burnout. However, the healthcare industry has been slower to adopt this technology, in part due to the importance of avoiding medically-relevant transcription mistakes. In this work, we present the Clinical BERTScore (CBERTScore), an ASR metric that penalizes clinically-relevant mistakes more than others. We demonstrate that this metric more closely aligns with clinician preferences on medical sentences as compared to other metrics (WER, BLUE, METEOR, etc), sometimes by wide margins. We collect a benchmark of 13 clinician preferences on 149 realistic medical sentences called the Clinician Transcript Preference benchmark (CTP), demonstrate that CBERTScore more closely matches what clinicians prefer, and release the benchmark for the community to further develop clinically-aware ASR metrics

    Look ahead of the bit while drilling: potential impacts and challenges in the McMurray Formation

    International audienceThe oil and gas industry, operating and service companies, and academia are actively looking for ways to see ahead of the drillbit while drilling to reduce the risks and costs of the operation and improve the well-placement process. Optimal drilling in the challenging and highly heterogeneous reservoirs, where geological interpretations overlook the high-frequency variations in the rock properties, requires reliable subsurface information from around and ahead of the drillbit. To provide this, we have developed a seismic-while-drilling imaging algorithm based on signal processing, drillstring modeling, and pre-stack wave-equation migration. To extend the visibility ahead-of-the-bit, we use the drillbit as a seismic source and image the changes in acoustic properties of rocks both around and ahead of the drillbit. The common practice is to build a reverse vertical seismic profile (R-VSP) gathers. Here, we use a blind deconvolution algorithm to estimate the drillbit source signature from the data directly. Alternatively, we can estimate such a signature through drillstring modeling and top-drive measurements (i.e., force and velocity). The drillstring dynamics is modeled by using Riemann's invariants and a backstepping approach. Next, we input the estimated source signature to the pre-stack wave-equation depth imaging workflow. Our simulations show that providing drillbit source signature to the pre-stack wave equation depth migration consistently delivers reliable subsurface images around and ahead of the drillbit. The output of our workflow is a high-resolution subsurface image that provides vital information in oil sands reservoirs for placement of steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) well pairs. Compared to conventional practices, the proposed methodology images around and ahead of the drillbit enabling interactive decision making and optimal well-placement. The key feature of the presented methodology is that instead of cross-correlating the seismic-while-drilling data with the pilot trace and building R-VSP gathers, we use the estimated drillbit source signature and deliver high-resolution pre-stack depth migrated images. Through numerical modeling, we tested the potential impacts, validity, and challenges of the proposed methodology in drilling horizontal wells in SAGD settings with an emphasis on the McMurray Formation.     The unreasonable effectiveness of AI CADe polyp detectors to generalize to new countries

    Background and aims\textbf{Background and aims}: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computer-Aided Detection (CADe) is commonly used for polyp detection, but data seen in clinical settings can differ from model training. Few studies evaluate how well CADe detectors perform on colonoscopies from countries not seen during training, and none are able to evaluate performance without collecting expensive and time-intensive labels. Methods\textbf{Methods}: We trained a CADe polyp detector on Israeli colonoscopy videos (5004 videos, 1106 hours) and evaluated on Japanese videos (354 videos, 128 hours) by measuring the True Positive Rate (TPR) versus false alarms per minute (FAPM). We introduce a colonoscopy dissimilarity measure called "MAsked mediCal Embedding Distance" (MACE) to quantify differences between colonoscopies, without labels. We evaluated CADe on all Japan videos and on those with the highest MACE. Results\textbf{Results}: MACE correctly quantifies that narrow-band imaging (NBI) and chromoendoscopy (CE) frames are less similar to Israel data than Japan whitelight (bootstrapped z-test, |z| > 690, p < 10−810^{-8} for both). Despite differences in the data, CADe performance on Japan colonoscopies was non-inferior to Israel ones without additional training (TPR at 0.5 FAPM: 0.957 and 0.972 for Israel and Japan; TPR at 1.0 FAPM: 0.972 and 0.989 for Israel and Japan; superiority test t > 45.2, p < 10−810^{-8}). Despite not being trained on NBI or CE, TPR on those subsets were non-inferior to Japan overall (non-inferiority test t > 47.3, p < 10−810^{-8}, δ\delta = 1.5% for both). Conclusion\textbf{Conclusion}: Differences that prevent CADe detectors from performing well in non-medical settings do not degrade the performance of our AI CADe polyp detector when applied to data from a new country. MACE can help medical AI models internationalize by identifying the most "dissimilar" data on which to evaluate models

    Stick-slip and Torsional Friction Factors in Inclined Wellbores

    Stick slip is usually considered a phenomenon of bit-rock interaction, but is also often observed in the field with the bit off bottom. In this paper we present a distributed model of a drill string with an along-string Coulomb stiction to investigate the effect of borehole inclination and borehole friction on the incidence of stick-slip. This model is validated with high frequency surface and downhole data and then used to estimate static and dynamic friction. A derivation of the torsional drill string model is shown and includes the along-string Coulomb stiction of the borehole acting on the string and the ‘velocity weakening’ between static and dynamic friction. The relative effects of these two frictions is investigated and the resulting drillstring behavior is presented. To isolate the effect of the along-string friction from the bit-rock interaction, field data from rotational start-ups after a connection (with bit off bottom) is considered. This high frequency surface and downhole data is then used to validate the surface and downhole behavior predicted by the model. The model is shown to have a good match with the surface and downhole behavior of two deviated wellbores for depths ranging from 1500 to 3000 meters. In particular, the model replicates the amplitude and period of the oscillations, in both the topside torque and the downhole RPM, as caused by the along-string stick slip. It is further shown that by using the surface behavior of the drill-string during rotational startup, an estimate of the static and dynamic friction factors along the wellbore can be obtained, even during stick-slip oscillations, if axial tension in the drillstring is considered. This presents a possible method to estimate friction factors in the field when off-bottom stick slip is encountered, and points in the direction of avoiding stick slip through the design of an appropriate torsional start-up procedure without the need of an explicit friction test
