Travel cost is a barrier for many tourists who wish to visit faraway destinations. This affects exotic tourism destinations located far from key markets since it the great majority of travelers from these markets will find travel cost prohibitively high. However, exotic tourism destinations might attract more visitors if they are able to improve market access through improved international air connectivity. The objective of this study is to test whether an increase in the number of long-haul flights has positive impacts on the number of tourist arrivals. We estimate a dynamic demand model using panel data of tourist arrivals to Peru and flight connections from 75 origin countries spanning the years 2004 to 2009, and find significant positive direct and indirect effects of long haul flights on demand for air travel to Peru.Air travel demand, nonstop flights, tourism arrivals, Peru

The Price Responsiveness of Salmon Supply in the Short and Long Run

Productivity growth and competitiveness indicate that salmon supply is price responsive. However, in the short run supply is likely to be constrained by the biological production process, regulations, and capacity constraints. In this article, we estimate a restricted profit function for Norwegian salmon producers, which allows us to examine the industry’s short-run and long-run supply responsiveness separately. Using data spanning 1985 to 2004, we find that there is close to zero, own-price supply responsiveness in the short run. In the long run, this changes substantially as supply becomes elastic. This result can contribute to explaining the observed cyclical profitability in the salmon farming industry.Restricted profit function, supply, salmon farming, profit cycles, Demand and Price Analysis, Productivity Analysis, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies, Research Methods/ Statistical Methods, D24, Q21, Q22,

Modelling Production Risk in Small Scale Subsistence Agriculture

In this paper we are investigating how production risk may influence the way a risk averse producer like a subsistence farmer chooses optimal input levels. Risk averse producers will take into account both the mean and the variance of output, and therefore we expect them to choose input levels which differ form the optimal input level of risk neutral producers. Production risk is of particular importance in developing countries, since variance in production here may have grave consequences for the farmer and his family. To model the production decision problem under such circumstances we have made use of the fact that production risk can be treated as heteroskedasticity. Our analysis is based on a dataset obtained from a survey on smallholders in the Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania. Since evidence of output risk in inputs is found, we reestimate the mean and variance function using a maximum likelihood estimator, and correct the standard errors to provide valid inference.Farm Management,

Financial Anxiety in Low- and Moderate-Income Households: Findings From the Household Financial Survey

Despite significant gains in the U.S. economy following the Great Recession, finances remain a common source of stress for many American households. In 2016, 52% of U.S. workers reported that their financial position made them stressed, and research reveals that stress and anxiety associated with finances are particularly common among low-income Americans. In this brief, we explore the topic of financial anxiety, particularly its relationship to demographic and financial characteristics, measures of hardship, and financial behaviors. We find that financial anxiety is strongly linked to the overall levels of debt and assets held by low-income households, as well as their ability to access resources in an emergency, but is not closely linked with income measures. Households incapable of saving due to their expenses and those experiencing material hardships also have higher levels of financial anxiety. Policymakers and program designers could help address this issue in several ways. For example, they might work to expand access to programs intended to provide financial slack to low-income households; assistance in building emergency savings and access to low-cost credit products would improve slack in these households while improving protection against income and expense volatility and its associated stresses

The State of State EITCs: An Overview and Their Implications for Low- and Moderate-Income Households

The success of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has prompted numerous states to develop and administer their own EITC programs. This brief presents the results of analyses that used data from a large sample of low- and moderate-income households to learn more about the relationship between state and federal EITCs as well as about their relationships, respective and combined, with financial behaviors and the experience of financial and material hardship. Given that many EITC beneficiaries face substantial risk of experiencing income volatility and financial shocks, insights gained from this brief can assist policymakers in understanding the importance of expanded EITCs and promoting emergency saving at tax time

Cross-Cultural Content Validity of the Autism Program Environment Rating Scale in Sweden

Increasing rates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and younger age at diagnosis pose a challenge to preschool intervention systems. In Sweden, most young autistic children receive intervention service in community-based preschool programs, but no tool is yet available to assess the quality of the preschool learning environment. This study adapted the Autism Program Environment Rating Scale Preschool/Elementary to Swedish community context (APERS-P-SE). Following translation and a multistep modification process, independent experts rated the content validity of the adaptation. Findings indicate high cross-cultural validity of the adapted APERS-P-SE. The cultural adaption process of the APERS-P-SE highlights similarities and differences between the American and Swedish preschool systems and their impact on early ASD intervention
