Changes in Grape Maturity Induced by Spraying Ethanol

Get PDF
Three different ethanol solutions were sprayed onto Cabernet Sauvignon (Vitis vinifera L.) clusters during the ripening period: 2.5, 5 and 10% by volume in water. Controls were sprayed with water alone. Three different times of spraying were also tested: 8, 10 and 13 weeks post-flowering. One of the observed changes was a lower titratable acidity in grape samples at harvest, when the clusters were sprayed with ethanol at 10 weeks, in comparison with controls. The wines made with grapes treated with ethanol after mid-veraison, had higher ODs at 520 nm than did the controls. This may due to a combined effect of red pigment levels and acidity. In addition, following malolactic fermentation, the acidity levels of wines made with ethanoltreated grapes were slightly higher than those made with the control grapes. Spraying ethanol at 13 weeks post-flowering increased the berry weight by 10% at harvest without decreasing the °Brix value. The corresponding wines had similar degrees of alcohol. This observation was made for the first time in 2001

Thyroxine Therapy in Euthyroid Patients Does Not Affect Body Composition or Muscular Function

OBJECTIVE:The main objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of small increments in thyroxine (T4) levels following levothyroxine (L-T4) administration on the body composition of women patients. The secondary objective was to assess the effect of the therapy on energy expenditure and muscular function. METHODS: The prospective, randomized study consisted of a 12-month follow-up of 37 women with thyroid nodules. The patients were divided into two groups for comparison, one treated with L-T4 (20 women) and the other untreated (17 women). L-T4 dose was individually adjusted to obtain a serum thyroid-stimulating hormone in the lower portion of the normal range. Multiple tests, including bioelectrical impedance analysis, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, air displacement plethysmography, measurement of waist circumference, and skinfold anthropometry, were used to investigate the muscular, fat, and water compartments; energy expenditure and muscular function were assessed by cycle ergometry. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in body composition, heart rate, energy metabolism, or muscular function between the group of women treated with L-T4 and the untreated group. CONCLUSION: The controlled increase of circulating T4 does not appear to modify the body composition or muscular function in women patients

Hypochloremia and hyponatremia as the initial presentation of cystic fibrosis in three adults

Get PDF
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. Most diagnoses of CF are made during infancy or childhood, and are based on respiratory or digestive involvement. Initial extracellular dehydration leading to the diagnosis of CF is usual in infants but has only exceptionally been reported in adults. We describe three new adult cases of CF initially presenting with depletive hyponatremia and hypochloremia following exposure to heat. At first consultation, these patients had no symptoms suggestive of CF. One patient presented with a seizure induced by hyponatremia. The two other patients were siblings carrying a novel c.4434insA mutation in exon 24 of CFTR. Acute dehydration is a very rare initial manifestation of CF but may be life-threatening. The possibility of CF should not be ignored in cases of depletive hyponatremia, hypochloremia or hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, even in otherwise healthy patients

To our knowledge, this is the first time that an intact polyfunctionalised BHP with the “geological” 17α,21β(H) configuration has been identified in a sediment. Previously, this structure has only been observed in species of the nitrogen fixing bacterium Frankia. Its presence here in the sedimentary environment has implications for the interpretation of hopanoid ββ/αβ ratios in the geological record. This work was supported by grants from the Australian Antarctic Science Advisory Committee (1166 to J.V.) and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO; 851.20.006 to J.S.S.D. and NWO-VENI grant 016.051.014 to M.J.L.C.)

Predicted Infrared and Raman Spectra for Neutral Ti_8C_12 Isomers

Using a density-functional based algorithm, the full IR and Raman spectra are calculated for the neutral Ti_8C_12 cluster assuming geometries of Th, Td, D2d and C3v symmetry. The Th pentagonal dodecahedron is found to be dynamically unstable. The calculated properties of the relaxed structure having C3v symmetry are found to be in excellent agreement with experimental gas phase infrared results, ionization potential and electron affinity measurements. Consequently, the results presented may be used as a reference for further experimental characterization using vibrational spectroscopy.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Physical Review A, 2002 (in press

A case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma associated with hypercalcemia.

A patient with a diffuse, small cleaved cell, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma associated with marked hypecalcemia was described. Antibody to the adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma virus was absent. Although bone marrow was infiltrated by lymphoma cells, destructive or lytic bone lesions could not be detected. The serum level of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone C-terminal (PTH-C) was normal. The serum level of 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D was lower than normal. This case suggests that other humoral substances produced by lymphoma cells may be responsible for hypercalcemia.</P></p
