Carnarvon trip report -- July/August 2005
The main aim of this trip was to get the station running again after the May floods by fitting a new rain detector and a new amplifier/V-F module for Mark V, and by trying out new detector modules in Jabba. A few other repair and maintenance tasks were also achieved
Oral delivery of biologics via the intestine
Biologics are currently one of the most promising avenues for therapeutic interventions in conditions such as metabolic disease, ageing and inflammatory disorders, and for chronic ailments, oral delivery of such medicines has for years been recognised as an important goal. Despite decades of intensive research, oral delivery of biologics is only just starting to prove feasible. There has been much talk about the barriers to uptake of biologics, and indeed, one function of the intestine is to prevent, in one way or another, passage of unwanted materials across the gut, and yet, grams of biological agents both large and small pass across the intestinal cell wall every day. This review first describes the functioning of the gut under normal circumstances, then identifies the principle biological mechanisms which have been harnessed successfully, to date, to achieve oral uptake, outlining the pros and cons of each approach. Examples with different biologics are given, and information on result of the latest clinical trials is provided, where available
High power impulse magnetron sputtering discharges: Instabilities and plasma self-organization
We report on instabilities in high power impulse magnetron sputtering plasmas which are likely to be of the generalized drift wave type. They are characterized by well defined regions of high and low plasma emissivity along the racetrack of the magnetron and cause periodic shifts in floating potential. The azimuthal mode number m depends on plasma current, plasma density, and gas pressure. The structures rotate in × direction at velocities of ∼10 km s−1 and frequencies up to 200 kHz. Collisions with residual gas atoms slow down the rotating wave, whereas increasing ionization degree of the gas and plasma conductivity speeds it up

The conservation of panel paintings and related objects
Until the early 17th century almost all portable paintings were created on wood
supports, including masterpieces by famous painters, ranging from Giotto to Dürer
to Rembrandt. The structural conservation of these paintings requires specific
knowledge and skills as the supports are susceptible to damage caused by unstable
environmental conditions.
Unfortunately, past structural interventions often caused significant damage due
to insufficient knowledge of the behaviour of the wood panels, glue and paint
layers. Over the last fifty years, the field has developed treatment strategies based
on interdisciplinary collaboration and on the knowledge of specialist conservators.
Most current conservation protocols rely on empirical knowledge of conservators
and are not necessarily based on a scientific understanding of the nature and
behaviour of wood and paint layers.
In order to move the field forward, it is imperative to strengthen scientific research
into the production methods, ageing and future behaviour of panel paintings,
being an intricate interplay between different materials. A deeper understanding of
the processes that adversely affect panel paintings over time will contribute to the
improved care and conservation of these artworks.
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam brought together a group of experts from different disciplines to
recommend specific areas in the field that would benefit from systematic research.
The experts concluded that targeted interdisciplinary research projects are key to
understanding the behaviour of panel paintings and help conservators make better
informed decisions. Research into chemical and physical properties of wood, glue
and paint layers should be combined with an evaluation of past and current
conservation treatments. Research should also consider the history of the object,
studio practice, conservation history and thoughts on long-term impact of
treatments
