    Higher Spin Alternating Sign Matrices

    Get PDF
We define a higher spin alternating sign matrix to be an integer-entry square matrix in which, for a nonnegative integer r, all complete row and column sums are r, and all partial row and column sums extending from each end of the row or column are nonnegative. Such matrices correspond to configurations of spin r/2 statistical mechanical vertex models with domain-wall boundary conditions. The case r=1 gives standard alternating sign matrices, while the case in which all matrix entries are nonnegative gives semimagic squares. We show that the higher spin alternating sign matrices of size n are the integer points of the r-th dilate of an integral convex polytope of dimension (n-1)^2 whose vertices are the standard alternating sign matrices of size n. It then follows that, for fixed n, these matrices are enumerated by an Ehrhart polynomial in r.Comment: 41 pages; v2: minor change

    Clickbait.

    Get PDF
Clickbait is a surround-sound, audio, video, and audience participation work for live electronics that connects its listeners to the music through the use of a variety of interconnected technologies. The topic of internet clickbait was the initial inspiration that grew into a personal and cultural question. Technological mechanics of live web-based services and data-mining informed those themes further. The interactive nature of internet clickbait drove efforts to establish a deeper connection between the audience and the music. To develop connections between people, applications, and the piece, Node.js, Google Cloud Services, VoiceRSS, and Max/MSP/Jitter video tools were used. This underpins a composition of unique, computer-based music created with modular synthesis, Spitfire Audio’s software instruments, and Max’s MIDI capabilities showcasing explorations of effects processing using Max’s audio tools, Circuit Music Labs’ Petra, and IRCAM’s SuperVP and Spat5. The implementations of these technologies were in service of a central, conceptual theme allowing Clickbait to transcend beyond the normal limits of an ordinary audio work

Sugar, Steam and Steel: The Industrial Project in Colonial Java, 1830-1850

    Get PDF
Sugar, Steam and Steel is about cane sugar and the transformation of an Indonesian island into the â Oriental Cubaâ during the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Between the 1830s and the 1880s, sweetener manufacture in Dutch-controlled Java â the crown jewel of the erstwhile Netherlands Indies â drew decisively away in matters of technology and sugar science from other Asian centres of production which had once equaled or, more often, surpassed it in terms of both output and know-how. Along with its larger and altogether more famous Caribbean counterpart, Javaâ s industry came to occupy a position at the apex of the trade in what had become by this date a key global commodity

ABSTRAK the tendency is to think of power in terms of simple schemas. reducing the field of hegemony to a polarised contest between dominant and subaltern forces. Hegemony. however. may be better thought of as an ongoing jostle. ever in motion and requiring continuous effort. ...Even in polarised situations... it is important to monitor the actual transactions taking place and to probe into the nodal points of interaction. u..Neden-een Pieterse. \u27The Cultural Turn in Development: Questions of Power\u27. In this paper, we explore the competitive significance of both bundled and loyalty discounts. The paper proceeds as follows. In Section II, we examine the antitrust treatment of both bundled discounts and loyalty discounts in the United States. In Section III, we examine bundled discounts and discuss their competitive significance. In Section IV, we examine loyalty discounts as well as their competitive significance. In Section V, we suggest that the courts evaluate bundled discounts and loyalty discounts under the Rule of Reason. In Section VI, we close with some concluding remarks and policy recommendations

THE WHEAT AND STOCKER CATTLE ANALYZER: A MICROCOMPUTER DECISION AID FOR EVALUATING WHEAT PRODUCTION AND STOCKER CATTLE GRAZING DECISIONS

    Get PDF
The Wheat and Stocker Cattle Analyzer is a microcomputer decision aid for evaluating interrelated wheat production and stocker cattle grazing decisions under yield, weight gain, and price uncertainty. An important feature of the model is that wheat commodity program provisions are incorporated into the analysis. A wide range of alternatives including wheat production for grain only, owned stocker cattle grazing, and wheat pasture leasing can be evaluated by the program.Crop Production/Industries, Livestock Production/Industries,

An ‘Indies’ Couple: Colonial Communities and Issues Surrounding Identity in the Dutch East Indies, ca. 1890-1930s

The life-stories of two individuals – the married couple Johanna Bezoet de Bie and Alexander MacNeill – provide the context for discussion of segments of the upper strata of the Dutch creole communities in the Dutch East Indies/Colonial Indonesia around the turn of the twentieth century. In particular, it focuses on the characteristic pervasiveness of regular family formation and sociability among people established there, in some cases, over several generations. In addition to its exploitation of recently digitalised materials relating to family history, the reconstruction attempted here also makes extensive use of the visual record, in a context in which the agency of the photograph is much to the fore. The argument turns, however, on the extent to which the couple in question sought to differentiate – even distance – themselves from the extensively referenced Indisch environment in which they were located, and in so doing underscores the complexity and fluidity of diasporic identities.L’histoire des vies de deux individus ‒ le couple marié Johanna Bezoet de Bie et Alexander MacNeill ‒ fournissent le contexte d’une réflexion sur des segments des couches supérieures des communautés créoles néerlandaises aux Indes orientales néerlandaises (l’Indonésie coloniale) au tournant du XXe siècle.
