    Quasar Jets and their Fields

    Observations of jets from quasars and other types of accreting black hole are briefly summarized. The importance of beaming and γ\gamma-ray observations for understanding the origin of these jets is emphasised. It is argued that both the power source and the collimation are likely to be magnetic in origin, although the details remain controversial. Ultrarelativistic jets may be formed by the spinning hole and collimated by a hydromagnetic disc wind. Progress in understanding jets has been handicapped by our inadequate knowledge of how magnetic field really behaves under cosmic conditions. Fortunately, significant insights are coming from solar observations, numerical simulation and laboratory plasma experiments. Some possible, evolutionary ramifications are briefly discussed and it is suggested that it is the mass of the black hole relative to that of the galaxy which determines the eventual galaxy morphology.Comment: Latex. 17pages Proc Discusison Meeting on Magnetic Activity in Stars, Discs and Quasars.     Imaging Redshift Estimates for BL Lacertae Objects

    We have obtained high dynamic range, good natural seeing i' images of BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) to search for the AGN host and thus constrain the source redshift. These objects are drawn from a sample of bright flat-spectrum radio sources that are either known (via recent Fermi LAT observations) gamma-ray emitters or similar sources that might be detected in continuing gamma-ray observations. All had spectroscopic confirmation as BL Lac sources, but no redshift solution. We detected hosts for 25/49 objects. As these galaxies have been argued to be standard candles, our measured host magnitudes provide redshift estimates (ranging from 0.2--1.0). Lower bounds are established on the redshifts of non-detections. The mean of the fit redshifts (and lower limits) is higher than those of spectroscopic solutions in the radio- and gamma-ray- loud parent samples, suggesting corrections may be needed for the luminosity function and evolution of these sources.Comment: 15 pages, to appear in the Astrophysical Journa

    Stellar contents and Star formation in the young cluster Stock 18

    We have carried out deep (V∼\sim21 mag) \ubvri photometric study of the star cluster Stock 18. These along with archival Infrared data have been used to derive the basic cluster parameters and also to study the star formation processes in and around the cluster region. The distance to the cluster is derived as 2.8±\pm0.2 kpc while its age is estimated as 6.0±2.06.0\pm2.0 Myr. Present study indicates that interstellar reddening is normal in the direction of the cluster. The mass function slope is found to be -1.37±\pm0.27 for the mass range 1<M/M⊙<<M/M_\odot<11.9. There is no evidence found for the effect of mass segregation in main-sequence stars of the cluster. A young stellar population with age between 1-2 Myr have been found in and around the cluster region. The presence of IRAS and AKARI sources with MSX intensity map also show the youth of the Sh2-170 region.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables (Accepted for publication in New Astronomy

    Yang-Lee and Fisher Zeros of Multisite Interaction Ising Models on the Cayley-type Lattices

    A general analytical formula for recurrence relations of multisite interaction Ising models in an external magnetic field on the Cayley-type lattices is derived. Using the theory of complex analytical dynamics on the Riemann sphere, a numerical algorithm to obtain Yang-Lee and Fisher zeros of the models is developed. It is shown that the sets of Yang-Lee and Fisher zeros are almost always fractals, that could be associated with Mandelbrot-like sets on the complex magnetic field and temperature planes respectively.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; with minor correction

    Perturbation theories for the S=1/2 spin ladder with four-spin ring exchange

    The isotropic S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin ladder with additional four-spin ring exchange is studied perturbatively in the strong coupling regime with the help of cluster expansion technique, and by means of bosonization in the weak coupling limit. It is found that a sufficiently large strength of ring exchange leads to a second-order phase transition, and the shape of the boundary in the vicinity of the known exact transition point is obtained. The critical exponent for the gap is found to be η≃1\eta\simeq1, in agreement both with exact results available for the dimer line and with the bosonization analysis. The phase emerging for high values of the ring exchange is argued to be gapped and spontaneously dimerized. The results for the transition line from strong coupling and from weak coupling match with each other naturally.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, some minor changes in text and reference
