    First petrophysical trials over dimension stones of Tierra del Fuego

    Se muestran aquí los primeros ensayos de laboratorio sobre las rocas dimensionales de Tierra del Fuego, región que tenía una potencialidad no evaluada respecto al uso posible de este recurso nativo. Nunca habían sido empleadas hasta ahora rocas duras (ígneas) ni pizarras en la construcción residencial, el revestimiento de fachadas ó pisos. Dos pequeñas canteras de rocas plutónicas han sido abiertas recientemente: una de ellas en el cerro Jeu-Jepén, aprovechada para la construcción de la escollera marina del puerto de Río Grande y la ruta nacional, y la otra en la península de Ushuaia, iniciada con el propósito de remover un morro para localizar el aeropuerto y usada últimamente como revestimiento de viviendas. Sobre un grupo de muestras fueguinas se realizaron para este trabajo ensayos físicos de densidad aparente, absorción de agua y porosidad abierta, como asimismo ensayos mecánicos de resistencia a la compresión y a la tensión, y también algunos ensayos Dorry para medir su resistencia a la abrasión. En la Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego los tipos más apropiados como rocas ornamentales han resultado ser las distintas variedades de rocas granitoides, con relativamente altas resistencias a la compresión y a la tensión. Las rocas del cerro Jeu-Jepén analizadas reúnen entonces las mejores condiciones para su aprovechamiento inmediato: buenos resultados petrofísicos, posibilidad de obtención de bloques de tamaño adecuado, descubrimiento de la cantera y fácil acceso.These are the first trials in laboratory over dimension stones of Tierra del Fuego. The Fuegian territory had a not evaluated potential respect of the possible use of this native resource. Neither hard rocks nor metamorphic rocks (slates) have been applied ever for residential construction, facades and flooring in Fuegian buildings until now. Only in recent years, two little quarries of plutonic rocks have been opened. One of them in the Jeu-Jepen hill, worked firstly to build the breakwaves of Río Grande harbour and then the National railroad. The other one is located in the Ushuaia Peninsula and was started initially to remove a hill for locate the airport and lately used for facings. In the present work, selected stone samples were analysed under standard ASTM test methods for determining compressional strength and modulus of rupture, practiced in accord to IRAM specification for determining apparent density, water absorption and open porosity and Dorry hardness test for measuring the resistance to abrasion. In Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego the major types of dimension rocks are scarce and randomly distributed granitic bodies, any of them with relatively high compressional and tensional resistance. Therefore, the analyzed rocks of the Jeu-Jepén hill combine among others the best conditions for its immediate use: high petrophysical responses, possibility of obtaining useful-sized blocks, open quarry and easy access.Fil: Acevedo, Rogelio Daniel.     Jurassic-Cretaceous basic magmatism in the Fuegian Andes and their relationship with the Rocas Verdes marginal basin

    Numerosos filones capa, diques y coladas básicas bordean las ofiolitas de la cuenca marginal Rocas Verdes, afectados por metamorfismo regional de bajo grado. Se distinguen tres variedades según su paragénesis primaria: lavas y filones de plagioclasa-piroxeno, lavas y filones de plagioclasa y filones con hornblenda. Las dos primeras se intercalan en la Formación Lemaire (Jurásico Superior) sin afectar unidades suprayacentes (Formaciones Yahgán y Beauvoir). Muchos filones de estas dos variedades presentan evidencias de emplazamiento en sedimentos no consolidados, indicando contemporaneidad con la Formación Lemaire y coladas basálticas. Las lavas de plagioclasa-piroxeno son semejantes químicamente con sus equivalentes intrusivos y serían co-genéticas. Las variedades de plagioclasa constituyen los bordes de algunos filones de plagioclasa-piroxeno, o bien filones independientes; su geoquímica sugiere que derivan de las variedades de plagioclasa-piroxeno por asimilación cortical. En base a la información de campo y geoquímica, el origen de las variedades de plagioclasa-piroxeno y plagioclasa es atribuido a las etapas iniciales del rifting, previo al desarrollo de la dorsal centro-oceánica, confirmando interpretaciones anteriores. En los sectores alejados del eje de la cuenca, las rocas básicas, excepto variedades con hornblenda, se emplazaron previamente a la depositación de la Formación Yahgán, que caracteriza la etapa más avanzada de la cuenca. Contrariamente, las diabasas con hornblenda cortan a la Formación Yahgán y tienen una petrografía y geoquímica distinta a las demás variedades. Todo indica que se trata de una unidad diferente y más moderna. Se adopta el nombre formacional de Gabro Puente Quemado para esta unidad.Several basic sills, dykes and lavas crop-out flanking the ophiolitic remnants of the Rocas Verdes marginal basin, affected by low-grade regional metamorphism. Three varieties are distinguished accordingly to their primary paragenesis: plagioclase-pyroxene lavas and sills, plagioclase lavas and sills, and hornblende-bearing sills. The former two are intercalated in the Late Jurassic Lemaire Formation, but do not extend into overlying units (Yahgán and Beauvoir Formations). Several sills of these two varieties show evidences of emplacement into unconsolidated sediments, which indicate they are coeval with Lemaire Formation and basaltic lavas. The plagioclase-pyroxene lavas and sills are chemically similar, suggesting they are co-genetic. The plagioclase varieties appear towards the margins of some pyroxene-plagioclase varieties or as independent sills; its geochemistry suggests they derive from the pyroxene-plagioclase varieties by crustal assimilation. Based on field relations and chemistry, the origin of the plagioclase-pyroxene and plagioclase varieties is related to the initial stages of rifting, before the development of the oceanic spreading ridges. This interpretation, along with the field observation, suggests that in areas away from the axis of the basin all basic rocks, except the hornblende diabases, were emplaced prior to the deposition of the Yahgán Formation, which represents the most evolved stage of the marginal basin. Contrarily, the hornblende diabases cut the Yahgán Formation and are petrographically and chemically distinct from the other varieties. Thus they constitute a different, younger unit.     Ovulatory and embryonic response to recombinant bovine somatotropin in goats super ovulated with FSHp

    Artículo científico publicado en revista indizada.El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la somatotropina bovina recombinante (rBST) en la actividad ovárica, cantidad y calidad de embriones transferibles en cabras durante el anestro estacional. Se utilizaron 30 cabras multíparas sincronizadas con protocolo corto de CIDR y superovuladas con FSHp, asignadas a tres tratamientos (n = 10): T1 = control, sin rBST, T2 = 100 mg rBST y T3 = 200 mg rBST. Las variables cuantitativas se analizaron mediante prueba de Kruskal-Wallis; el porcentaje de estro y de embriones recuperados, mediante prueba de Chi - cuadrada. Las cabras del T3 tuvieron mayor número de CL, seguidas del T2 (p = 0.002). El número de embriones recuperados y de blastocitos fue mayor en T3 (p = 0.001). El número de mórulas fue mayor en T1 (p = 0.001). La aplicación de rBST al inicio del estro incrementa la actividad ovárica y la cantidad de embriones transferibles en cabras

    Molecular Analysis of Activation-Induced Cytidine Deaminase Gene in Immunoglobulin-E Deficient Patients

    Understanding how class switch recombination (CSR) is regulated to produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) has become fundamental because of the dramatic increase in the prevalence of IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions. CSR requires the induction of the enzyme AICDA in B cells. Mutations in AICDA have been linked to Hyper-IgM syndrome (HIGM2), which shows absence of switching to IgE as well as to IgG and IgA. Although isolated IgE deficiency is a rare entity, here we show some individuals with normal serum IgM, IgG, and IgA levels that had undetectable total serum IgE levels. We have analyzed the AICDA gene in these individuals to determine if there are mutations in AICDA that could lead to selective IgE deficiency. Conformational sensitive gel electrophoresis (CSGE) and sequencing analysis of AICDA coding sequences demonstrated sequence heterogeneity due to 5923A/G and 7888C/T polymorphisms, but did not reveal any novel mutation that might explain the selective IgE deficit

    Acute abdomen is a common and sometimes dramatic clinical condition, which can be fatal if diagnosis is not made in time. There are many etiologies for acute abdominal pain; therefore, the diagnostic approach should be based on clinical assessment, including laboratory and image studies. Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant condition, characterized by cutaneous pigmentation and tumor formation along nerves in the brain, skin and other organs, the gastrointestinal stromal tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms associated with NF1. The close correlation between both pathologies is well known, and the clinical relevance relies on the different pathogenesis from sporadic gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), with important therapeutic implications as the use of imatinib prior or after surgery, regarding the individual context of the patient.
