    Fashion and Identity in Georgian Britain: the Grand Tour Portraits of Pompeo Batoni

    Portrait artist to popes, royalty, and nobility, Pompeo Batoni was hailed as the premier portrait painter in Rome during his career in the mid to late eighteenth century. Batoni’s reputation as the de rigueur portraitist amongst wealthy British Grand Tourists was solidified by the late 1750s, and he dominated this market until his death in 1787. This thesis will examine the different types of fashion displayed in Batoni’s Grand Tour portraits, and argue that many of the Georgian men depicted paid great attention to their dress and how it augmented their self-fashioned identities. The portrayal of British patrons in French-inspired continental dress, a style of clothing that was often ridiculed and seen as ostentatious at home, was integral to the images that Georgian aristocrats constructed of themselves as cosmopolitan elites worthy of being members of the ruling class. By exploring both the clothing itself and the cultural contexts in which such dress was appropriate, I will demonstrate that Batoni’s Grand Tour portraits went beyond naturalistic representation and were in fact carefully executed portrayals of how Georgian elites wished to view themselves, and how they wished to be viewed by their peers and social subordinates. Consideration of these aspects of Batoni’s Grand Tour portraits will provide new insight into the role of clothing in the literal self-fashioning of elite Georgian men, an avenue under-explored in the context of art history

    Super-Razor and Searches for Sleptons and Charginos at the LHC

    Direct searches for electroweak pair production of new particles at the LHC are a difficult proposition, due to the large background and low signal cross sections. We demonstrate how these searches can be improved by a combination of new razor variables and shape analysis of signal and background kinematics. We assume that the pair-produced particles decay to charged leptons and missing energy, either directly or through a W boson. In both cases the final state is a pair of opposite sign leptons plus missing transverse energy. We estimate exclusion reach in terms of sleptons and charginos as realized in minimal supersymmetry. We compare this super-razor approach in detail to analyses based on other kinematic variables, showing how the super-razor uses more of the relevant kinematic information while achieving higher selection efficiency on signals, including cases with compressed spectra.Comment: 33 pages, 33 figure

    The Space Between: a geospatial analysis of connectivity between lion populations in East Africa

    Lion (Panthera leo) populations and habitat range are in steep decline. Lions are increasingly isolated in protected areas and other pockets of habitat. Habitat fragmentation lowers effective population size and increases vulnerability to threats such as inbreeding depression and localized catastrophes. Conserving connecting habitat between lion populations is critical for mitigating effects from fragmentation. With approximately half of all remaining lions and a rich network of protected areas, the East African Community presents vital opportunities to preserve connectivity. I collected 69,068 lion presence locations from field researchers and overlaid these locations with a suite of environmental variables. Due to strong biases in the presence data, I used an intuitive approach of creating a habitat envelope from observed presence data, and then identified combinations of environmental conditions that are conducive to lion presence. By determining the distribution of these environmental conditions, I predict areas with habitat through which lions can disperse, though may not be resident. I then identify contiguous patches of connecting habitat that link protected areas with documented lion populations. I find that while many protected areas remain connected, Uganda’s lion populations in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks are critically isolated. Furthermore, my analysis suggests several bottlenecks and gaps that constitute high priority areas for conserving or restoring connectivity

    Hypoxia alters posterior cingulate cortex metabolism during a memory task: a 1H fMRS study

    Environmental hypoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen (F(I)O(2)) ~ 0.120) is known to trigger a global increase in cerebral blood flow (CBF). However, regionally, a heterogeneous response is reported, particularly within the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) where decreased CBF is found after two hours of hypoxic exposure. Furthermore, hypoxia reverses task-evoked BOLD signals within the PCC, and other regions of the default mode network, suggesting a reversal of neurovascular coupling. An alternative explanation is that the neural architecture supporting cognitive tasks is reorganised. Therefore, to confirm if this previous result is neural or vascular in origin, a measure of neural activity that is not haemodynamic-dependant is required. To achieve this, we utilised functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy to probe the glutamate response to memory recall in the PCC during normoxia (F(I)O(2) = 0.209) and after two hours of poikilocapnic hypoxia (F(I)O(2) = 0.120). We also acquired ASL-based measures of CBF to confirm previous findings of reduced CBF within the PCC in hypoxia. Consistent with previous findings, hypoxia induced a reduction in CBF within the PCC and other regions of the default mode network. Under normoxic conditions, memory recall was associated with an 8% increase in PCC glutamate compared to rest (P = 0.019); a change which was not observed during hypoxia. However, exploratory analysis of other neurometabolites showed that PCC glucose was reduced during hypoxia compared to normoxia both at rest (P = 0.039) and during the task (P = 0.046). We conclude that hypoxia alters the activity-induced increase in glutamate, which may reflect a reduction in oxidative metabolism within the PCC. The reduction in glucose in hypoxia reflects continued metabolism, presumably by non-oxidative means, without replacement of glucose due to reduced CBF

    A Unified Analytic Framework for Prioritization of Non-Coding Variants of Uncertain Significance in Heritable Breast and Ovarian Cancer

    Background Sequencing of both healthy and disease singletons yields many novel and low frequency variants of uncertain significance (VUS). Complete gene and genome sequencing by next generation sequencing (NGS) significantly increases the number of VUS detected. While prior studies have emphasized protein coding variants, non-coding sequence variants have also been proven to significantly contribute to high penetrance disorders, such as hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC). We present a strategy for analyzing different functional classes of non-coding variants based on information theory (IT) and prioritizing patients with large intragenic deletions. Methods We captured and enriched for coding and non-coding variants in genes known to harbor mutations that increase HBOC risk. Custom oligonucleotide baits spanning the complete coding, non-coding, and intergenic regions 10 kb up- and downstream of ATM, BRCA1, BRCA2, CDH1, CHEK2, PALB2, and TP53 were synthesized for solution hybridization enrichment. Unique and divergent repetitive sequences were sequenced in 102 high-risk, anonymized patients without identified mutations in BRCA1/2. Aside from protein coding and copy number changes, IT-based sequence analysis was used to identify and prioritize pathogenic non-coding variants that occurred within sequence elements predicted to be recognized by proteins or protein complexes involved in mRNA splicing, transcription, and untranslated region (UTR) binding and structure. This approach was supplemented by in silico and laboratory analysis of UTR structure. Results 15,311 unique variants were identified, of which 245 occurred in coding regions. With the unified IT-framework, 132 variants were identified and 87 functionally significant VUS were further prioritized. An intragenic 32.1 kb interval in BRCA2 that was likely hemizygous was detected in one patient. We also identified 4 stop-gain variants and 3 reading-frame altering exonic insertions/deletions (indels). Conclusions We have presented a strategy for complete gene sequence analysis followed by a unified framework for interpreting non-coding variants that may affect gene expression. This approach distills large numbers of variants detected by NGS to a limited set of variants prioritized as potential deleterious changes

    Socioeconomic drivers of illegal bushmeat hunting in a Southern African Savanna

    Illegal bushmeat hunting of economically and ecologically valuable wildlife populations is emerging as a threat across African savannas. Due to the cryptic nature of illegal hunting, little information exists on the drivers of the bushmeat industry. Here we report on the socioeconomic drivers identified in a broader investigation into illegal bushmeat hunting in rural villages around a southern African savanna ecosystem, the Okavango Delta, Botswana. We conducted interviews with bushmeat hunters and heads of rural households about hunting activities, rural livelihoods, attitudes towards wildlife, and market characteristics of illegal bushmeat. Using generalized linear models, we identified and investigated a set of independent variables that characterize illegal-hunter households. Results revealed that compared to non-hunter households, illegal hunter households (n = 119, 25% of the sample) lived in closer proximity to wildlife, were more likely to farm crops, and more often received income from formal employment by at least one household member. Bushmeat hunting was positively correlated with livestock wealth but not associated with household income. Only 11.4% (n = 44) of non-hunter households reported purchasing bushmeat. Most households (84%) reported incurring costs associated with living near wildlife (e.g., damages to crops or livestock), with no difference between hunter and non-hunter households. Hunters were more likely to say they valued wildlife. We conclude that bushmeat hunting in Botswana is generally supplemental to household core income sources rather than essential for subsistence. We propose two interventions to counter the negative impacts of illegal hunting on the region's lucrative wildlife-based economy: 1) more effective law enforcement that imposes costs for hunting illegally, and 2) development of alternative wildlife-based revenue streams that motivate communities to conserve wildlife.The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations provided the majority of funding for this research under Technical Cooperation Programme project TCP/BOT/3501.
