Fracture Toughness Of Nanoscale Zirconia Coatings On Titanium Substrates
In the biomedical field, the surface modification of titanium aims to inhibit wear, reduce corrosion and ion release, and promote biocompatibility. Sol-gel-derived ceramic nanoscale coatings show promise due to their relative ease of production, ability to form a physically and chemically uniform coating over complex geometric shapes, and their potential to deliver exceptional mechanical properties due to their nanocrystalline structure. Vanishing Preons in the Fifth Dimension
We examine supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=5 gauged supergravity coupled
to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets using the spinorial
geometry method. By making use of methods developed in hep-th/0606049 to

Analysis of Coplanar On-Chip Interconnects on Lossy Semiconducting Substrates
In this paper, a method for analysis and modeling of coplanar transmission interconnect lines that are placed on top of silicon-silicon oxide substrates is presented. The potential function is expressed by series expansions in terms of solutions of the Laplace equation for each homogeneous region of layered structure. The expansion coefficients of different series are related to each other and to potentials applied to the conductors via boundary conditions. In the plane of conductors, boundary conditions are satisfied at Nd discrete points with Nd being equal to the number of terms in the series expansions. The resulting system of inhomogeneous linear equations is solved by matrix inversion. No iterations are required. A discussion of the calculated line admittance parameters as functions of width of conductors, thickness of the layers, and frequency is given. The interconnect capacitance and conductance per unit length results are given and compared with those obtained using full wave solutions, and good agreement have been obtained in all the cases treated
Non-propagating degrees of freedom in supergravity and very extended G_2
Recently a correspondence between non-propagating degrees of freedom in
maximal supergravity and the very extended algebra E_11 has been found. We
perform a similar analysis for a supergravity theory with eight supercharges
and very extended G_2. In particular, in the context of d=5 minimal
supergravity, we study whether supersymmetry can be realised on higher-rank
tensors with no propagating degrees of freedom. We find that in this case the

Seven-branes and Supersymmetry
We re-investigate the construction of half-supersymmetric 7-brane solutions
of IIB supergravity. Our method is based on the requirement of having globally
well-defined Killing spinors and the inclusion of SL(2,Z)-invariant source
terms. In addition to the well-known solutions going back to Greene, Shapere,
Vafa and Yau we find new supersymmetric configurations, containing objects
whose monodromies are not related to the monodromy of a D7-brane by an SL(2,Z)
