A Pure Space To Be Mexican: Ethnic Mexicans And The Mexico-u.S. Soccer Rivalry, 1990-2002

This thesis examines the soccer rivalry between Mexico and the United States that has been evolving since the early 1990s. Neither Mexico nor the United States are soccer powerhouse nations, yet their rivalry is arguably one of the most passionate contests in the world. For the Mexican National team the rivalry has become a struggle to maintain dominance and power in one of the few arenas where Mexico traditionally has had an advantage. The ability of the United States to challenge Mexican hegemony has intensified the rivalry. Although the United States has been able to score some victories inside the field, acceptance in their home venues has been elusive. When playing against Mexico, even as the host team, the United States is consistently treated as the visiting team by the ethnic Mexicans living in the United States who compose the majority of the spectators. The rivalry has increased as a result of ethnic Mexicans\u27 overt preference for the Mexican National team. In the U.S. public sphere, ethnic Mexicans have been segregated, discriminated against, economically marginalized and considered invisible. Outside of the stadium, ethnic Mexicans in general have been sidelined by U.S. society. Inside the stadium, they have made their presence known and have become highly visible. By chanting for the Mexican team, wearing the colors of El Tri, and carrying the Mexican flag, the fans have asserted their identity and heritage

At the Movies: Avoiding Head-to-Head Competition on the Big Screen: The Economics of Movie Distribution

This paper provides theoretical explanations for devices that movie distributors use to avoid head-to-head competition. We use a simple static model to show how revenuse sharing exhibition contracts providex multiplex owners with incentives to take cross effects on demand into account. Then we simulate a dynamic version of the model to explian the practice of staggering the release dates of hit movies and consider how vertical integration affects release patterns and the allocation of movies to screens. Real Time Railway Traffic Management Modeling Track-Circuits

The real time railway traffic management seeks for the train routing and scheduling that minimize delays after an unexpected event perturbs the operations. In this paper, we propose a mixed-integer linear programming formulation for tackling this problem, modeling the infrastructure in terms of track-circuits, which are the basic components for train detection. This formulation considers all possible alternatives for train rerouting in the infrastructure and all rescheduling alternatives for trains along these routes. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first formulation that solves this problem to optimality. We tested the proposed formulation on real perturbation instances representing traffic in a control area including the Lille Flandres station (France), achieving very good performance in terms of computation time

Substance Use in Jaltenango, Chiapas: Finding dignified approaches to treat addiction

Substance use disorders in Mexico have been prevalent for years, and increased since the COVID-19 pandemic. In rural areas of Chiapas, hardly reached by medical attention, let alone mental health services, treating addiction has become a challenge. In Mexico, substance use is strongly linked to gender norms, socioeconomic situations, education and psychoemotional factors. This capstone explores current treatment methods in Mexico’s “anexos”, and proposes alternative and dignified approaches for recovery from a public health lens and a holistic approach. The literature review covers the determinants of substance use, social consequences, existing treatment options and access barriers. Through qualitative interviews with stakeholders, the needs, pains, and gaps of the target population were listened and understood, as well as the best practices according to mental health experts, resulting in a project proposal to provide quality, dignified attention to substance use disorders in rural Chiapas. This project involves training for non-specialized staff, professional staffing, skill-building activities for patients, and support groups for families of patients, in order to address the problem as a system that does not only depend on the patient’s abstinence, but the social support around them, too
