Structural strength of glass and impact of scale factor
Glass is a typical elastic brittle material with a predominant influence of glass surface state
on the damaging, fracture and strength of the elements under thermo-mechanical loading. Basing on the
continual mechanics as well as on fracture mechanics there were analyzed the regularities of a structural
strength for sheet float glass under different modes of stress state. It was shown that fracture resistance,
strength and resource of glass structural elements depend on structure of surface cracked layer first of all. This
layer is formed during the production of float glass, as well as under the glass cutting and machining of the
details. The defects and micro-cracks in this layer are not in the constant state. Their sizes and shapes change
permanently in the result of diffuse and localized damaging of the glass surface under the production and
installation operations, and under the influence of normal and extreme operation conditions. There were
analyzed the experimental methods of structural strength of glass plates evaluation under the bending. The
paper shows the need to consider the influence the size of defects in the surface of samples and components
during mechanical testing of the structural strength of glass. It was obtained that the depth of critical
technological defects, which are typical for large size architectural glass parts is significantly larger than the
depth of cracks formed under processing of conventional small and standard specimens for strength control. So
the results of these specimens’ tests don’t reflect the factual values of building structures made of float glass. The
use of large specimens with a length up to 3.2 m or more for the experimental estimation of surface quality and
the real strength of structural components of sheet float glass is more effective than the use of standard
techniques, which specify the use of small samples. To estimate the strength of glass beams with vertical load-
bearing plates test method with bending the plates in vertical position is recommended. These methods were
proposed for the use at the implementation of complex technical approach for the guaranteeing of required
strength and durability of the architectural glass structures. This technical approach was realized in the building
industry. It includes the special set of the mechanical tests of small specimens and large size samples of glass
with the dimensions comparable with real glass constructions. The full scale experiments on the real building
structures may be made to obtain the important data on surface state, types and sizes of typical damages and
critical parameters of surface micro-cracks. The estimation of real strength level and durability of load-bearing
glass structures was made basing on the results of mechanical tests and micrographs of specimens and
structural elements with a fracture focus analysis. The results may be used for the development of glass
technology and structures optimized basing on strength and durability parameters
Thermoresistant Nano-filled Glass-ceramics
AbstractIt is known that replacing microscopic particles by nano-particles in a composite formulation results in improved physical properties. The authors investigated the possibility adding of nanoparticles SiO2 and TiO2 in an amount of 10-30% in the slurry to produce glass-ceramics. Mechanical strength of the glass-ceramics parts greatly depends on micro-defects of surface and internal structures substantially connected with the factual quality of used production technology, mechanical and heat treatment. There is analyzed a special complex of the destructive and nondestructive methods of strength and quality control of glass-ceramics developed to guarantee the durability of structures used in the usual and extreme service conditions with the temperature up to 1000 ˚C. The methods based on the precise preproduction tests of specimens and real structural elements such as plates and shells were supplemented with the additional non-standard methods for effective use in the working environment which is typical for line production of super thermal-resistant glass-ceramic. As a result of the research found that the adding of nanoparticles in the slurry increases the density of the structure, improves the physical properties and provides high stability of glass-ceramics
Strengthening of carbide cutting tool for heavy machinery on the base of surface and bulk modification by physical methods
Analysis of the tool work and refusals ,when heavy cutting, showed that in addition with the tool wear, almost half of refusals are caused by brittle fracture of the cutting carbides, which manifests itself in the microchipping of cutting edges and tool cutting part chipping. This determines necessity to use methods of surface and bulk modification to improve tool performance and life time. As the method of surface modification the plasma vapor deposition (PVD) was chosen and the pulsed magnetic field treatment was suggested as a method for bulk modification. It is proposed to create discrete surface topography coatings with purposeful chosen parameters that can prevent the loss of stability of coating elements under the action of compressive residual stresses and cohesion cracking under tensile stresses. For longitudinal compression, the discrete region size is calculated using the theory of stability of elastic systems; under tensile stresses сohesion cracking of a coating can be avoided if a coating region size would be determined from the calculated crack step. This increases the efficiency of PVD – coatings and extends the sphere of their application to carbide cutting tool for heavy machines. Tests in industrial conditions showed that the life time of replaceable insert SNMN 190912T with TiN discrete coating increases in 3.7 times and 1.45 times as compared with the uncoated tool and one with continuous coating. It is obtained that the treatment of carbide tool with pulsed magnetic field leads to an increase in bending strength limit under static load by 16 ... 27%. The dependence of this increase on the treatment regime and tool material was found. Laboratory tests for carbide cutting tool by "breaking feeding "method showed that the pulsed magnetic field treatment leads to an increase in the period of resistance to fracture by 17% and reduce the coefficient of variation by 34%. Application of pulsed magnetic field minimizes scatter values of indicators characterizing operational reliability of cutting tool. It is concluded that promising methods to improve tool performance and life time are techniques that combine surface and bulk modification
Covariance properties and regularization of conserved currents in tetrad gravity
We discuss the properties of the gravitational energy-momentum 3-form within
the tetrad formulation of general relativity theory. We derive the covariance
properties of the quantities describing the energy-momentum content under
Lorentz transformations of the tetrad. As an application, we consider the
computation of the total energy (mass) of some exact solutions of Einstein's
general relativity theory which describe compact sources with asymptotically
flat spacetime geometry. As it is known, depending on the choice of tetrad
frame, the formal total integral for such configurations may diverge. We
propose a natural regularization method which yields finite values for the
total energy-momentum of the system and demonstrate how it works on a number of
explicit examples.Comment: 36 pages, Revtex, no figures; small changes, published versio
The latest recommendations of the American Thyroid Association have caused serious disagreements between the nuclear medicine and endocrinologist communities regarding the radioactive iodine use. In 2018 eighteen experts from 8 countries and 4 leading organizations (ATA, EANM, SNMMI and ETA) met for the first time to establish mutual understanding in the role of radioiodine therapy for differentiated thyroid cancer. After much discussion and exchange of experience, the participants developed a consensus document based on the so-called nine principles of Martinique. We present an overview of the article published 2019 in Thyroid, entitled «Controversies, consensus, and collaboration in the use of 131I therapy in differentiated thyroid cancer: a joint statement from the American Thyroid Association, the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, and the European Thyroid Association».
A cyclic universe with colour fields
The topology of the universe is discussed in relation to the singularity
problem. We explore the possibility that the initial state of the universe
might have had a structure with 3-Klein bottle topology, which would lead to a
model of a nonsingular oscillating (cyclic) universe with a well-defined
boundary condition. The same topology is assumed to be intrinsic to the nature
of the hypothetical primitive constituents of matter (usually called preons)
giving rise to the observed variety of elementary particles. Some
phenomenological implications of this approach are also discussed.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures; v.4: final versio
Exchange interaction in the diluted semimagnetic semiconductors Hg1-xMnxSe under pressure
Galvanomagnetic properties and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in n-type Hg1-xMnxSe diluted solutions for Mn concentrations 0.001≤x≤0.23 in magnetic fields up to 7 T at temperatures T=(0.2 to 20) K under hydrostatic pressure up to 1.6 GPa are investigated. New methods based on oscillation measurements are proposed to determine magnetic characteristics (value and sign of exchange interaction energy for magnetic ion clusters and average cluster size) of semimagnetic semiconductor diluted solid solutions. These methods permit to determine the magnetic subsystem characteristics in the range of low temperatures between the spin-glass transition and the temperature corresponding to the binding energy of magnetic atoms in the cluste
