    Public awareness of health issues after the Surgeon General tweets

    Health information distributed on social media may benefit public health by aiding in disease management and increasing awareness, however, not all information disseminated on social media is reliable. Therefore, a need exists for credible, evidence-based information that is accessible by the public. In the United States, the Surgeon General serves as the highest public health official and could serve as a solution to this need. In our study, we used Google Trends to evaluate the search interest of topics related to tweets sent out by the Surgeon General. We then used an autoregressive integrated moving algorithm to determine whether the tweets were associated with search volumes that were greater than the expected search volumes without the tweet. Thirteen tweets were analyzed and a significant positive mean search interest was found for only 2 tweets. One of the significant tweets had a mean search interest increase of 7.50% (95% CI, 0.8 - 14.2), which was a tweet the Surgeon General retweeted from another account. Given the public's limited engagement with the Surgeon General's current Twitter account, strategies to increase the number of followers is greatly needed if the Surgeon General is to make effective use of these outlets. One viable solution to the Surgeon General reaching a greater audience may be through celebrity partnerships

    Large scale interoperability, integrating the Daidalos project

    This paper discusses the challenges of large scale integration within the context of the massive collaborative mobile & wireless systems beyond 3G research project Daidalos. It first examines the relationship of the Daidalos architecture. It then identifies an integration model that was used for the project, with an overview of the testing processes, tools, and methodologies employed. Next, discusses the Daidalos demonstration scenario, and shows how it was used in the integration execution validation and verification activity of the project. The article closes with a discussion of the research necessary to develop these capabilities further

    Exploring the longer-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical and mental health of people with inflammatory rheumatic diseases: a cross-sectional survey

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the longer term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the self-reported physical and mental health of people with inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRDs). METHODS: Two thousand twenty-four patients with IRDs were randomly selected from electronic health records. Survey invitations were sent (August 2021 coinciding with relaxation of UK COVID-19 restrictions) using SMS and postal approaches. Self-reported data included demographics, shielding status and physical (MSK-HQ) and mental health (PHQ8 and GAD7). RESULTS: Six hundred thirty-nine people completed the survey (mean (SD) age 64.5 (13.1) years, 384 (60%) female). Moderate/severe impact of the pandemic on physical and mental health was reported by 250 (41%) and 241 (39%) respectively. One hundred seventy-two (29%) reported moderate/severe depression (PHQ8 ≥ 10) and 135 (22%) moderate/severe anxiety (GAD7 ≥ 10). Females reported greater impacts of the pandemic on physical health (44% vs 34%), mental health (44% vs 34%), arthritis symptoms (49% vs 36%) and lifestyle factors (weight gain and reduced exercise and physical activity) than males. The physical and mental impacts were less in people with RA compared with other IRDs. Physical health impacts did not differ between age groups, but younger patients reported greater impacts on mental health. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the physical and mental health of people with IRDs. These effects were greatest in females. Recovery needs to address the negative impact of the pandemic on lifestyle factors to minimise the long-term impacts for people with IRDs.     Scintillation Observations and Response of The Ionosphere to Electrodynamics (SORTIE) Mission First Light

    At low and middle latitudes, wave-like plasma perturbations are thought to provide the seeds for larger perturbations that may evolve non-linearly to produce irregularities, which in turn have deleterious effects on HF communications and global positioning systems. Unfortunately, there is currently no comprehensive atlas of measurements describing the global spatial or temporal distribution of wave-like perturbations in the ionosphere. The SORTIE mission, a CubeSat experiment with team members from ASTRA, AFRL, UTD, and Boston College, was designed to help map and further understand the wave-like plasma perturbation distributions throughout the ionosphere. The SORTIE 6U CubeSat sensor package measures key in-situ plasma parameters, and includes an ion velocity meter and a planar Langmuir probe. SORTIE will provide (1) the initial spectrum of wave perturbations which are the starting point for plasma instabilities; (2) measured electric fields which determine the magnitude of the instability growth rate near the region where plasma bubbles are generated; (3) initial observations of irregularities in plasma density which result from plasma instability growth. The SORTIE spacecraft was deployed from the ISS in February 2020 and began data collections shortly after orbit insertion. The measurements are expected to continue for at least a year. In this presentation we present the first light results of the SORTIE mission, as well as reviewing the science objectives and providing an overview of the spacecraft and instruments
