Scaling Tests of the Cross Section for Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering
We present the first measurements of the \vec{e}p->epg cross section in the
deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region.
The Q^2 dependence (from 1.5 to 2.3 GeV^2) of the helicity-dependent cross
section indicates the twist-2 dominance of DVCS, proving that generalized
parton distributions (GPDs) are accessible to experiment at moderate Q^2. The
helicity-independent cross section is also measured at Q^2=2.3 GeV^2. We
present the first model-independent measurement of linear combinations of GPDs
and GPD integrals up to the twist-3 approximation.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. Text shortened for publication.

Q^2 Evolution of the Neutron Spin Structure Moments using a He-3 Target
We have measured the spin structure functions and of He in a
double-spin experiment by inclusively scattering polarized electrons at
energies ranging from 0.862 to 5.07 GeV off a polarized He target at a
15.5 scattering angle. Excitation energies covered the resonance and
the onset of the deep inelastic regions. We have determined for the first time
the evolution of ,
and for the neutron in the range 0.1 GeV 0.9 GeV with good precision. displays a smooth
variation from high to low . The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule holds
within uncertainties and is non-zero over the measured range.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett.. Updated Hermes

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering off the neutron
The present experiment exploits the interference between the Deeply Virtual
Compton Scattering (DVCS) and the Bethe-Heitler processes to extract the
imaginary part of DVCS amplitudes on the neutron and on the deuteron from the
helicity-dependent D cross section measured at =1.9
GeV and =0.36. We extract a linear combination of generalized parton
distributions (GPDs) particularly sensitive to , the least constrained
GPD. A model dependent constraint on the contribution of the up and down quarks
to the nucleon spin is deduced.Comment: Published in Phys. Rev. Let
The E00-110 experiment in Jefferson Lab's Hall A: Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering off the Proton at 6 GeV
We present final results on the photon electroproduction
() cross section in the deeply virtual Compton
scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region from Jefferson Lab
experiment E00-110. Results from an analysis of a subset of these data were
published before, but the analysis has been improved which is described here at
length, together with details on the experimental setup. Furthermore,
additional data have been analyzed resulting in photon electroproduction cross
sections at new kinematic settings, for a total of 588 experimental bins.
Results of the - and -dependences of both the helicity-dependent and
helicity-independent cross sections are discussed. The -dependence
illustrates the dominance of the twist-2 handbag amplitude in the kinematics of
the experiment, as previously noted. Thanks to the excellent accuracy of this
high luminosity experiment, it becomes clear that the unpolarized cross section
shows a significant deviation from the Bethe-Heitler process in our kinematics,
compatible with a large contribution from the leading twist-2 DVCS term to
the photon electroproduction cross section. The necessity to include
higher-twist corrections in order to fully reproduce the shape of the data is
also discussed. The DVCS cross sections in this paper represent the final set
of experimental results from E00-110, superseding the previous publication.Comment: 48 pages, 32 figure
Exclusive Neutral Pion Electroproduction in the Deeply Virtual Regime
We present measurements of the ep->ep pi^0 cross section extracted at two
values of four-momentum transfer Q^2=1.9 GeV^2 and Q^2=2.3 GeV^2 at Jefferson
Lab Hall A. The kinematic range allows to study the evolution of the extracted
hadronic tensor as a function of Q^2 and W. Results will be confronted with
Regge inspired calculations and GPD predictions. An intepretation of our data
within the framework of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering has also been
attempted

The non-coding RNA 7SK is the scaffold for a small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (7SKsnRNP) which regulates the function of the positive transcription elongation factor P-TEFb in the control of RNA polymerase II elongation in metazoans. The La-related protein LARP7 is a component of the 7SKsnRNP required for stability and function of the RNA. To address the function of LARP7 we determined the crystal structure of its La module, which binds a stretch of uridines at the 3'-end of 7SK. The structure shows that the penultimate uridine is tethered by the two domains, the La-motif and the RNA-recognition motif (RRM1), and reveals that the RRM1 is significantly smaller and more exposed than in the La protein. Sequence analysis suggests that this impacts interaction with 7SK. Binding assays, footprinting and small-angle scattering experiments show that a second RRM domain located at the C-terminus binds the apical loop of the 3' hairpin of 7SK, while the N-terminal domains bind at its foot. Our results suggest that LARP7 uses both its N- and C-terminal domains to stabilize 7SK in a closed structure, which forms by joining conserved sequences at the 5'-end with the foot of the 3' hairpin and has thus functional implications
Measurement of the Generalized Forward Spin Polarizabilities of the Neutron
The generalized forward spin polarizabilities and of
the neutron have been extracted for the first time in a range from 0.1 to
0.9 GeV. Since is sensitive to nucleon resonances and
is insensitive to the resonance, it is expected that the
pair of forward spin polarizabilities should provide benchmark tests of the
current understanding of the chiral dynamics of QCD. The new results on
show significant disagreement with Chiral Perturbation Theory
calculations, while the data for at low are in good agreement
with a next-to-lead order Relativistic Baryon Chiral Perturbation theory
calculation. The data show good agreement with the phenomenological MAID model.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, corrected typo in author name, published in PR
Measurement of the Proton and Deuteron Spin Structure Function g_1 in the Resonance Region
We have measured the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g_1^p and
g_1^d in the region of the nucleon resonances for W^2 < 5 GeV^2 and and GeV^2 by inelastically scattering 9.7 GeV polarized
electrons off polarized and targets. We observe
significant structure in g_1^p in the resonance region. We have used the
present results, together with the deep-inelastic data at higher W^2, to
extract . This is the first
information on the low-Q^2 evolution of Gamma toward the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn
limit at Q^2 = 0.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
New Measurement of Parity Violation in Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering and Implications for Strange Form Factors
We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic
scattering of polarized electrons from the proton. The result is A = -15.05 +-
0.98(stat) +- 0.56(syst) ppm at the kinematic point theta_lab = 12.3 degrees
and Q^2 = 0.477 (GeV/c)^2. The measurement implies that the value for the
strange form factor (G_E^s + 0.392 G_M^s) = 0.025 +- 0.020 +- 0.014, where the
first error is experimental and the second arises from the uncertainties in
electromagnetic form factors. This measurement is the first fixed-target parity
violation experiment that used either a `strained' GaAs photocathode to produce
highly polarized electrons or a Compton polarimeter to continuously monitor the
electron beam polarization.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Tex, elsart.cls; revised version as accepted for

The ratio of proton's electric to magnetic form factors measured by polarization transfer
The ratio of the proton's elastic electromagnetic form factors was obtained
by measuring the transverse and longitudinal polarizations of recoiling protons
from the elastic scattering of polarized electrons with unpolarized protons.
The ratio of the electric to magnetic form factor is proportional to the ratio
of the transverse to longitudinal recoil polarizations. The ratio was measured
over a range of four-momentum transfer squared between 0.5 and 3.5 GeV-squared.
Simultaneous measurement of transverse and longitudinal polarizations in a
polarimeter provides good control of the systematic uncertainty. The results
for the ratio of the proton's electric to magnetic form factors show a
systematic decrease with increasing four momentum squared, indicating for the
first time a marked difference in the spatial distribution of charge and
magnetization currents in the proton.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, version of paper after corrections due to
