    The first part of this paper includes a summary of the most relevant studies on the relationship between accidents and indicators of tire-pavement traction. The results of this research are the basis for the design standards in various Countries in the world for the management of road surface and for defining threshold levels of skid resistance. The second part of this work proposes a review of levels of skid resistance for an existing road and introduces a relationship between the SFC (Sideway-Force Coefficient) parameter and road geometry (radius of curves, superelevation, design speed), and, consequently, with the demand of traction

    Exact and heuristic solution of the consistent vehicle-routing problem

    Providing consistent service by satisfying customer demands with the same driver (driver consistency) at approximately the same time (arrival-time consistency) allows companies in last-mile distribution to stand out among competitors. The consistent vehicle-routing problem (ConVRP) is a multiday problem addressing such consistency requirements along with traditional constraints on vehicle capacity and route duration. The literature offers several heuristics but no exact method for this problem. The state-of-the-art exact technique to solve VRPs-column generation (CG) applied to route-based formulations in which columns are generated via dynamic programming-cannot be successfully extended to the ConVRP because the linear relaxation of route-based formulations is weak. We propose the first exact method for the ConVRP, which can solve medium-sized instances with five days and 30 customers. The method solves, via CG, a formulation in which each variable represents the set of routes assigned to a vehicle over the planning horizon. As an upper bounding procedure, we develop a large neighborhood search (LNS) featuring a repair procedure specifically designed to improve the arrival-time consistency of solutions. Used as stand-alone heuristic, the LNS is able to significantly improve the solution quality on benchmark instances from the literature compared with state-of-the-art heuristics

    Degradation Prediction Model for Friction of Road Pavements with Natural Aggregates and Steel Slags

    Steel production wastes (steel slags) are used more often in asphalt concrete pavements as a valuable replacement for natural aggregates, which are becoming increasingly rare. In this paper authors investigate the polishing characteristics of aggregates, and in particular of steel slags, used in bituminous road surfacing, are a major factor in determining the resistance to skidding. The main purpose of the study is the identification of a suitable degradation model, based on friction indicators, in the laboratory, as well as the comparison of in-situ pavement skid resistance with the cumulative number of passing vehicles over the years. The model predicts the expected resistance to skidding of the road surface based on the knowledge of the polished stone value (PSV) of the aggregates and the expected trac on the road. In this study, several types of aggregates were compared: steel slag, limestone, limestone and slag mixture, diabase, Criggion stone and basalt. Using a standard PSV test, it was found that the aggregates did not reach the lower value of skid resistance (equilibrium value). The analysis of the British Portable Number (BPN) data versus polishing time allowed to empirically derive a regression model for each investigated aggregate. Hence, it appears possible to define both an investigatory level and threshold level to predict the actual residual life of the pavement from the examination of skid resistance

    An exact solution framework for multitrip vehicle-routing problems with time windows

    Multitrip vehicle-routing problems (MTVRPs) generalize the well-known VRP by allowing vehicles to perform multiple trips per day. MTVRPs have received a lot of attention lately because of their relevance in real-life applications - for example, in city logistics and last-mile delivery. Several variants of the MTVRP have been investigated in the literature, and a number of exact methods have been proposed. Nevertheless, the computational results currently available suggest that MTVRPs with different side constraints require ad hoc formulations and solution methods to be solved. Moreover, solving instances with just 25 customers can be out of reach for such solution methods. In this paper, we proposed an exact solution framework to address four different MTVRPs proposed in the literature. The exact solution framework is based on a novel formulation that has an exponential number of variables and constraints. It relies on column generation, column enumeration, and cutting plane. We show that this solution framework can solve instances with up to 50 customers of four MTVRP variants and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods from the literature

    An Exact Method for (Constrained) Assortment Optimization Problems with Product Costs

    We study the problem of optimizing assortment decisions in the presence of product-specific costs when customers choose according to a multinomial logit model. This problem is NP-hard and approximate solutions methods have been proposed in the literature to obtain both lower and upper bounds in a tractable manner. We propose the first exact solution method for this problem and show that provably optimal assortments of instances with up to one thousand products can be found, on average, in about two tenths of a second. In particular, we propose a bounding procedure based on the approximation method of Feldman and Topaloglu (2015a) to provide tight lower and upper bounds at a fraction of their computing times. We show how these bounds can be used to effectively identify an optimal assortment. We also describe how to adapt our approach to handle cardinality or space/resource capacity constraints on the assortment as well as assortment optimization under a mixed-multinomial logit model. In both cases, our solution method provides significant computational boosts compared to exact methods from the literature

    Breaking It Gently: A Rare Case of Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy Presenting as Sustained Ventricular Tachycardia

    Abstract We report a case of a 42-year-old female with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) who presented with recurrent episodes of palpitations, dizziness and lightheadedness. On evaluation, she developed a new onset sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) and the diagnosis was confirmed through genetic testing, cardiac imaging, and electrophysiological study. Insertion of automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD), antiarrhythmic medication, and ventricular ectopy radiofrequency ablation afforded improvement of symptoms. In conclusion, combination of these treatment modalities abated ventricular tachycardia from ARVC
