No total, 182 atletas participaram do estudo. The purpose of this study was to perform a survey about the prevalence, type and location of the injuries occurred in athletes of different modalities during the 53th Regional Games held in 2009. A total of 182 injured athletes being treated at the physical therapy clinic were included. Physical Therapy evaluation was performed to determine the anatomic location and type of injury, as well the sport modality. The results showed that mean age, height, weight and BMI were 23 years (±5.9), 1.73 m (±0.11), 71 kg (±14.22) and 24 kg/m² (±4) respectively. Proportionality to the number of athletes, handball athletes presented with higher number of injuries (4.25%), followed by indoor soccer players (3.7%), basketball (2.48%), volleyball (1.72%) and soccer (1.63%). The most common type of injury were sprains with 29.7% of cases (n=54) and mostly from soccer players; followed by contracture - 26.9% (n=49), mostly from basketball players; and contusion -25.8% (n=47), mostly from handball and indoor soccer players. The type of injury showed a significant association with the sports modality (p=0.0016). The lower limbs accounted for 71.4% of all injuries including knee (23.1%), ankle (18.1%), thigh (17.0%), leg (10.4%) and spine (9.9%). Preventive actions to avoid athletes' injury should be implemented in order to reduce the number of injuries in sports competitions such as in the Regional Games

Enhancing Clinical Decision-Making in LATAM through Virtual Genitourinary Tumour Boards

Inequity in cancer care access among LATAM countries is huge. Experience with gastrointestinal tumors in Latin America has shown care disparities can be reduced by equalizing access to high-quality medical knowledge in a context of a multidisciplinary environment for medical discussions. Here, we describe our experience of working with virtual genitourinary multidisciplinary tumor boards (vGUMDT), including how the virtual board has helped with clinical decision-making.We describe vGUMDT ́s experience and the importance of basing clinical decision-making in the consultant’s own center, reducing the need for referrals. In total, 345 cases were presented. The majority were prostate cancer cases, and the median age of patients was 64 years. Five participating centers were in Buenos Aires, 7 were in other cities in Argentina (Neuquén, Mendoza, Formosa, Salta, Santa Fé, Entre Ríos, Córdoba), and 3 centers were located in other countries in South America (Perú, Colombia, and Paraguay). Median distance from treating center to vGUMDT headquarters was 1289.8 km. A few patients (n = 60, 17.3%) were referred to the Alexander Fleming Cancer Institute or tertiary health care centers for surgery or systemic therapy, and a minority of cases were referred for radiotherapy. Multidisciplinary virtual experiences, such as vGUMDT, should be carefully addressed by health care decision-makers, given their popularity and their demonstrated cost-effectiveness

Palmitoylethanolamide Protects Against the Amyloid-β25-35-Induced Learning and Memory Impairment in Mice, an Experimental Model of Alzheimer Disease.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common form of neurodegenerative dementia. Amyloid-Β deposition, neurofibrillary tangle formation, and neuro-inflammation are the major pathogenic mechanisms that in concert lead to memory dysfunction and decline of cognition. Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is the naturally occurring lipid amide between palmitic acid and ethanolamine. Despite its clear role in inflammation and pain control, only limited in vitro evidence exist about a role for PEA in neurodegenerative diseases. Here we describe the neuroprotective activities of PEA in mice injected intracerebroventricularly with amyloid-Β 25-35 (Ab25-35) peptide (9 nmol). We used spatial and non-spatial memory tasks to evaluate learning and memory dysfunctions. Ab25-35 injection significantly impaired spontaneous alternation performances, water maze spatial reference and working-like memory, and novel object recognition test. PEA was administered once a day (3-30 mg/kg, subcutaneously), starting 3 h after Ab25-35, for 1 or 2 weeks. PEA reduced (10 mg/kg) or prevented (30 mg/kg) behavioral impairments induced by Ab25-35 injection. PEA failed to rescue memory deficits induced by Ab25-35 injection in peroxisome proliferator- activated receptor-α (PPAR-α) null mice. GW7647 (2-(4-(2-(1- cyclohexanebutyl)-3-cyclohexylureido)ethyl)phenylthio)-2-methylpropionic acid; 5 mg/kg per day), a synthetic PPAR-α agonist, mimicked the effect of PEA. Acute treatment with PEA was ineffective. According with the neuroprotective profile of PEA observed during behavioral studies, experimental molecular and biochemical markers induced by Ab25-35 injection, such as lipid peroxidation, protein nytrosylation, inducible nitric oxide synthase induction, and caspase3 activation, were reduced by PEA treatment. These data disclose novel findings about the therapeutic potential of PEA, unrevealing a previously unknown therapeutic possibility to treat memory deficits associated with AD
