Physical fractions of organic matter in an Oxisol cultivated with sugarcane in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
The objective of this work was to evaluate the physical fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) and the carbon management index (CMI) after different periods of soil tillage for sugarcane implantation. The study was carried out in a clayey Oxisol after 1, 3, and 5 years from soil tillage for crop plantation, with burning of the straw and manual cutting for harvest. As a reference, the soil of a native forest adjacent to the studied area was used. Soil samples were collected at the 0.00–0.05, 0.05–0.10, and 0.10–0.20-m soil layers, in order to quantify the CMI, as well as total organic C, particulated C, C associated with minerals, and C in the free light, occluded light, and heavy fractions of SOM. Soil tillage associated with previous burning of straw reduced the input of fresh organic matter to the soil and accelerated the decomposition of the SOM labile compartment, negatively affecting the stocks of soil physical fractions. The highest C proportions were observed in the fraction associated with minerals. The SOM density fractions were more sensible to detect changes in the stocks, lability, and the CMI, in the different crop implantation times. The cultivated areas had CMI lower than 100, which indicates the negative impacts of cropping on the stocks of organic matter and on soil physical quality
Soil quality in Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems in the Pampa Biome.
The increasing level of soil degradation has promoted the adoption of agricultural
management that combine agricultural production to soil conservation. In this
context, Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems (ILP) have been successfully adopted,
because they occupy the available resources in agroecosystems, concomitant to the
improvement of soil quality. Based on the above, this study was divided into two
chapters, where we sought to evaluate the soil quality on family farms in ILP
systems, defining physical, chemical and biological indicators able to detect the
effects of management practices used in different land use systems. The chapter 1
was developed in the municipality of Arroio do Padre and the chapter 2 in Rio
Grande, RS. Were evaluated three land use systems: grazed native field (CN),
ryegrass pasture (PA) and maize with succession of ryegrass (MI). In each of the
systems, disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in the layers from
0.00-0.05m, 0.05-0.10m and 0.10-0.20m for determining indicators such as: bulk
density, soil porosity, mean weight diameter, macronutrients, micronutrients, total
organic carbon, total nitrogen, granulometric physical fractionation and densimetric
physical fractionation, carbon management index, microbial biomass carbon, basal
soil respiration and laser-induced fluorescence. In Chapter 1, we concluded that the
factor analysis showed that the "Organic Matter Factor" was the largest contributor to
the total variance of the data evaluated in the three layers. The indicators that
compose the "Organic Matter Factor " are more associated with the CN, while the
indicators of "Aggregation Factor", "Compression Factor" and "Microbial Carbon
Factor" are more related to PA, and the indicators soil basal respiration, free light
fraction and porosity are more related to the system MI. The bulk density is related to
the three land use systems. Only the total porosity was not enough to detect
differences between the systems studied. In chapter 2, it was concluded that the
factor analysis showed that the factors "Organic Matter", "Light Organic Matter" and
"Humified Carbon" were the main contributors to the total variance of the data
evaluated in the three layers. The indicators that compose the "Organic Matter
Factor" are more associated with the CN and indicators related to "Aggregation
Factor", "Granulometric Fractions Factor” and " Total Porosity Factor" are more
associated with PA e MI. The bulk density, the heavy fraction of organic matter and
microbial carbon are related to the three land use systems. The mean weight
diameter and basal soil respiration were not effective to detect differences between
land use systems.
Neste
Somente a porosidade
No
e PA.
Organic matter and structural quality of an Oxisol under cultivation of sugarcane in Rio Grande do Sul state, 2013
According the increase in demand for renewable energy to replace those fossil, the sugarcane
crop has assumed importance in the nationally and internationally energy matrix. However,
because the heavy soil preparation for the implantation of culture and harvest by previous
burning of stubble have been observed negative impacts on the chemical and physical quality
of soils cultivated with sugarcane. This study is structured in two articles, the first is to
evaluate the aggregation, the physical fractions of organic matter (OM) and carbon
management index (CMI) of an Oxisol cultivated with sugarcane in the Rio Grande do Sul
state (RS), and the second article was to evaluate the tensile strength (TS) and friability (F) of
an Oxisol cultivated with sugarcane in RS state. The experimental design was completely
randomized and the treatments consist of various cycles of sugarcane: plant sugarcane (CP),
second ratoon sugarcane (C2), fourth ratoon sugarcane (C4). As a reference we used an area
of native forest (NF) with characteristics and properties of soil and topography similar by the
others. In each area were collected undisturbed and disturbed samples in layers from 0.00 to
0.05, from 0.05 to 0.10 m and from 0.10 to 0.20 m to quantify the percentage of water stable
aggregates (WSA), the mean weight diameter (MWD), total organic carbon (TOC), carbon
from the coarse fraction (CCF), the carbon associated with minerals (CAM), carbon free light
fraction (FLL), carbon occluded light fraction (OLF), carbon from the heavy fraction (HF),
CMI, TS and F.The soil preparation for the deployment of sugarcane, combined with previous
burning of stubble contributed to the reduction of young carbon cycling in the soil, reflecting
negatively on the stocks of physical particle size fractions of the OM and on distribution and
aggregate stability, except for the HF. With the exception of NF in the surface layer, the
proportions of physical density fractions of OM in relation to TOC increased in order
FLF<OLF<HF. All areas cultivated with sugarcane present CMI lower than 100, with the
lowest values observed in C2, indicating negative impacts on stocks of OM and on soil
quality. In the surface layer, the TS increased in depth and proportionally with the reduction
of the levels of TOC. In the surface layer, the soil was classified as very friable and in the
other layers, the areas C4 and MN presented themselves as friable. The TS and the F were
sensitive to detect differences in the structural quality of the areas cultivated with sugarcane.
Todas as
qualidade do solo.
Initial Recovery of Organic Matter of a Grass-Covered Constructed Soil after Coal Mining
ABSTRACT Revegetation is essential to improve the quality of constructed soils. This study investigated effects of perennial grasses on total organic carbon (TOC) stock, organic matter (OM) fractions and on quality of a recently constructed soil, after coal mining. Soil samples were collected from the 0.00-0.03 m layer two years after the beginning of the experiment. The treatments consisted of Cynodon dactylon cv vaquero (T1); Urochloa brizantha (T2); Panicum maximun (T3); Urochloa humidicola (T4); Hemarthria altissima (T5); Cynodon dactylon cv tifton (T6); bare constructed soil (T8); and natural soil (T9). The treatments with grass species increased the TOC stock by 57 % and increased the OM lability in comparison with T8. Higher C accumulation in the coarse and free light fractions and a higher C management index were observed in T2 and T3, indicating greater suitability of these species for the initial recovery of OM of the constructed soil
