    Maximizing Expected Value of Information in Decision Problems by Querying on a Wish-to-Know Basis.

    An agent acting under uncertainty regarding how it should complete the task assigned to it by its human user can learn more about how it should behave by posing queries to its human user. Asking too many queries, however, may risk requiring undue attentional demand of the user, and so the agent should prioritize asking the most valuable queries. For decision-making agents, Expected Value of Information (EVOI) measures the value of a query, and so given a set of queries the agent can ask, the agent should ask the query that is expected to maximally improve its performance by selecting the query with highest EVOI in its set. Unfortunately, to compute the EVOI of a query, the agent must consider how each possible response would influence its future behavior, which makes query selection particularly challenging in settings where planning the agent's behavior would be expensive even without the added complication of considering queries to ask, especially when there are many potential queries the agent should consider. The focus of this dissertation is on developing query selection algorithms that can be feasibly applied to such settings. The main novel approach studied, Wishful Query Projection (WQP), is based on the intuition that the agent should consider which query to ask on the basis of obtaining knowledge that would help it resolve a particular dilemma that it wishes could be resolved, as opposed to blindly searching its entire query set in hopes of finding one that would give it valuable knowledge. In implementing WQP, this dissertation contributes algorithms that are founded upon the following novel result: for myopic settings, when the agent can ask any query as long as the query has no more than some set number of possible responses, the best query takes the form of asking the user to choose from a specified subset of ways for the agent to behave. The work presented shows that WQP selects queries with near-optimal EVOI when the agent's query set is (1) balanced in the range of queries it contains; and (2) rich in terms of the highest contained query EVOI.PhDComputer Science and EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Selective Plasma Deposition of Fluorocarbon Films on SAMs

    A dry plasma process has been demonstrated to be useful for the selective modification of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates. These SAMs are used, during the fabrication of semiconductor electronic devices, as etch masks on gold layers that are destined to be patterned and incorporated into the devices. The selective modification involves the formation of fluorocarbon films that render the SAMs more effective in protecting the masked areas of the gold against etching by a potassium iodide (KI) solution. This modification can be utilized, not only in the fabrication of single electronic devices but also in the fabrication of integrated circuits, microelectromechanical systems, and circuit boards. In the steps that precede the dry plasma process, a silicon mold in the desired pattern is fabricated by standard photolithographic techniques. A stamp is then made by casting polydimethylsiloxane (commonly known as silicone rubber) in the mold. The stamp is coated with an alkanethiol solution, then the stamp is pressed on the gold layer of a device to be fabricated in order to deposit the alkanethiol to form an alkanethiolate SAM in the desired pattern (see figure). Next, the workpiece is exposed to a radio-frequency plasma generated from a mixture of CF4 and H2 gases. After this plasma treatment, the SAM is found to be modified, while the exposed areas of gold remain unchanged. This dry plasma process offers the potential for forming masks superior to those formed in a prior wet etching process. Among the advantages over the wet etching process are greater selectivity, fewer pin holes in the masks, and less nonuniformity of the masks. The fluorocarbon films formed in this way may also be useful as intermediate layers for subsequent fabrication steps and as dielectric layers to be incorporated into finished products

    Direct-Write Drawing of Carbon Nanotube/Polymer Composite Microfibers

    Carbon-nanotube- (CNT-) doped polymer solutions were drawn into arrays of microfibers using a novel direct-write process. This process utilizes a micromanipulator-controlled syringe loaded with solvated polymer mixed with CNTs to “write” networks of composite fibers with precisely positioned endpoints. The diameters of these composite fibers are correlated to the degree of capillary thinning that occurs prior to the solidification of the directly written CNT-doped solution filament. The fibers had diameters ranging from 7 μm to over 100 μm and possessed conductivities as high as 0.1 Sm−1. Fiber diameter was found to increase with increasing polymer concentration and decreasing fiber length and can be controlled through modulation of these parameters. The presence of CNTs was found not to significantly affect fiber diameter, despite the CNTs significant effect on viscosity, which was previously reported to influence diameter. This discrepancy is likely related to the non-Newtonian effects of CNT/polymer solutions, including an apparent shear thinning at increasing axial strain rates

    AbstractPatients who undergo cardiopulmonary bypass frequently have neuropsychologic dysfunction. This study was undertaken to determine whether altered cerebral perfusion and vascular responses may in part lead to these neuropsychologic changes. Pigs were placed on normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass for 2 hours. Basal cerebral blood flow and in vivo responses to administration by internal carotid artery of neuronally released vasoactive substances were evaluated before and 5 to 15 minutes after termination of cardiopulmonary bypass. Another group of pigs were placed on cardiopulmonary bypass for 2 hours and then perfused off bypass for 1 additional hour. In vitro responses of cerebral arterial microvessels (100 to 175 μm) from both groups were examined in a pressurized (40 mm Hg) no-flow state with videomicroscopy. Vessels from uninstrumented pigs served as control preparations for in vitro studies. Cerebrovascular resistance and cerebral perfusion were maintained constant during cardiopulmonary bypass and after separation from bypass. The internal carotid artery infusion of acetylcholine (cholinergic agonist) caused increased internal carotid artery blood flow before cardiopulmonary bypass but decreased blood flow after cardiopulmonary bypass. After 2 hours of cardiopulmonary bypass, the increase in internal carotid artery blood flow induced by isoproterenol (a β-adrenoceptor agonist) was reduced, whereas the response to sodium nitroprusside (a guanylate cyclase activator) was unchanged. In vitro acetylcholine-induced microvascular vasodilation was converted to a contractile response and isoproterenol elicited less relaxation after 2 hours of cardiopulmonary bypass. One hour of cerebral perfusion after cardiopulmonary bypass caused a further reduction in isoproterenol-induced relaxation but had no further effect on the cholinergically mediated response. In vitro relaxation responses to sodium nitroprusside and forskolin (an adenylate cyclase activator) were similar in all experimental groups, suggesting that second-messenger mechanisms remain intact after normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. In conclusion, basal cerebrovascular resistance and internal carotid artery blood flow are maintained if the systemic circulation and pressure are supported with fluid administration after cardiopulmonary bypass. Agonist-induced vasodilation of cerebral microvessels to cholinergic and β-adrenoceptor stimulation are selectively impaired after normothermic cardiopulmonary bypass, whereas second-messenger mechanisms remain intact.     Plasma androgens and the presence and course of depression in a large cohort of women

    Major depressive disorder (MDD) has a higher prevalence in women with supraphysiologic androgen levels. Whether there is also an association between depression and androgen levels in the physiological range, is unknown. This study examined if women with current MDD have higher androgen levels compared to women who have never had MDD, and if androgen levels are associated with onset and remission of MDD. In 1659 women (513 current MDD, 754 remitted MDD, and 392 never MDD), baseline plasma levels of total testosterone, 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, and androstenedione were determined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) with radioimmunoassays. Free testosterone was calculated. MDD status was assessed at baseline, and at 2 and 4 years follow-up. Women were aged between 18 and 65 years (mean age 41) with total testosterone levels in the physiological range (geometric mean 0.72 nmol/L [95% CI 0.27-1.93]). After adjusting for covariates and multiple testing, women with current MDD had a higher mean free testosterone than women who never had MDD (adjusted geometric mean 8.50 vs. 7.55 pmol/L, p = 0.0005), but this difference was not large enough to be considered clinically meaningful as it was consistent with statistical equivalence. Levels of other androgens and SHBG did not differ and were also statistically equivalent between the groups. None of the androgens or SHBG levels predicted onset or remission of MDD. Our findings support the idea that plasma androgens within the physiological range have no or only limited effects on depressive disorders in women
