    Respondent Consistency in a Tournament-Style Contingent Choice Survey

    We present the results of an internet-based contingent choice survey about management options at North Cascades National Park, focusing on respondent consistency. A tournament-style contingent ranking design followed by a contingent rating exercise allows for tests of different kinds of consistency in survey responses. Many respondents give inconsistent responses, but these inconsistencies do not create large differences in estimated tradeoffs between scenario attributes

Abstract: The submissionā€™s goal is to articulate how students in the 1950s shaped their identity in relationship to gender and gendered work in a clear and concise manner. The submission must not only look at the content provided in the sculpting of this identity, but also it must examine exactly how the sculpting of the identity took place, namely, communications in the student newspaper. One cannot prioritize the arguments for or against female industrialized labor and leave out the dimensions of male and female athletics. Likewise, it cannot leave out any advertisement or event sponsored by men or women associations. The project must demonstrate that identities were shaped in a multitude of ways even when providing a focused look at the contentions of gendered work. When looking into a field like gender, and especially gender discussions of years past, it is of the utmost importance to provide the narrative as the students themselves saw it in the 1950s and not as we would view it today. Therefore, it will be important for any presentation or evaluation of this topic to understand the narrative of ā€œseparate spheresā€. This concept is a historical consensus of gendered work occurring in one sphere for each gender. The male sphere focused upon the perceived masculine tasks of industry, while the female sphere focused on the feminine tasks of domesticity. It is from this general understanding of separate spheres, and the interpenetration of these spheres, that caused the gendered contentions examined in the newspaper

    Airborne sampling of aerosol particles: Comparison between surface sampling at Christmas Island and P-3 sampling during PEM-Tropics B

    Bulk aerosol sampling of soluble ionic compounds from the NASA Wallops Island P-3 aircraft and a tower on Christmas Island during PEM-Tropics B provides an opportunity to assess the magnitude of particle losses in the University of New Hampshire airborne bulk aerosol sampling system. We find that most aerosol-associated ions decrease strongly with height above the sea surface, making direct comparisons between mixing ratios at 30 m on the tower and the lowest flight level of the P-3 (150 m) open to interpretation. Theoretical considerations suggest that vertical gradients of sea-salt aerosol particles should show exponential decreases with height. Observed gradients of Na+ and Mg2+, combining the tower observations with P-3 samples collected below 1 km, are well described by exponential decreases (r values of 0.88 and 0.87, respectively), though the curve fit underestimates average mixing ratios at the surface by 25%. Cascade impactor samples collected on the tower show that \u3e99% of the Na+ and Mg2+mass is on supermicron particles, 65% is in the 1ā€“6 micron range, and just 20% resides on particles with diameters larger than 9 microns. These results indicate that our airborne aerosol sampling probes must be passing particles up to at least 6 microns with high efficiency. We also observed that nss SO42āˆ’ and NH4+, which are dominantly on accumulation mode particles, tended to decrease between 150 and 1000 m, but they were often considerably higher at the lowest P-3 sampling altitudes than at the tower.     Alkyl and multifunctional nitrates (RONO2, Ī£ANs) have been observed to be a significant fraction of NOy in a number of different chemical regimes. Their formation is an important free radical chain termination step ending production of ozone and possibly affecting formation of secondary organic aerosol. Ī£ANs also represent a potentially large, unmeasured contribution to OH reactivity and are a major pathway for the removal of nitrogen oxides from the atmosphere. Numerous studies have investigated the role of nitrate formation from biogenic compounds and in the remote atmosphere. Less attention has been paid to the role Ī£ANs may play in the complex mixtures of hydrocarbons typical of urban settings. Measurements of total alkyl and multifunctional nitrates, NO2, total peroxy nitrates (Ī£PNs), HNO3 and a representative suite of hydrocarbons were obtained from the NASA DC-8 aircraft during spring of 2006 in and around Mexico City and the Gulf of Mexico. Ī£ANs were observed to be 10ā€“20% of NOy in the Mexico City plume and to increase in importance with increased photochemical age. We describe three conclusions: (1) Correlations of Ī£ANs with odd-oxygen (Ox) indicate a stronger role for Ī£ANs in the photochemistry of Mexico City than is expected based on currently accepted photochemical mechanisms, (2) Ī£AN formation suppresses peak ozone production rates by as much as 40% in the near-field of Mexico City and (3) Ī£ANs play a significant role in the export of NOy from Mexico City to the Gulf Region

    Bromoform and dibromomethane measurements in the seacoast region of New Hampshire, 2002ā€“2004

    Atmospheric measurements of bromoform (CHBr3) and dibromomethane (CH2Br2) were conducted at two sites, Thompson Farm (TF) in Durham, New Hampshire (summer 2002ā€“2004), and Appledore Island (AI), Maine (summer 2004). Elevated mixing ratios of CHBr3 were frequently observed at both sites, with maxima of 37.9 parts per trillion by volume (pptv) and 47.4 pptv for TF and AI, respectively. Average mixing ratios of CHBr3 and CH2Br2 at TF for all three summers ranged from 5.3ā€“6.3 and 1.3ā€“2.3 pptv, respectively. The average mixing ratios of both gases were higher at AI during 2004, consistent with AI\u27s proximity to sources of these bromocarbons. Strong negative vertical gradients in the atmosphere corroborated local sources of these gases at the surface. At AI, CHBr3 and CH2Br2 mixing ratios increased with wind speed via seaā€toā€air transfer from supersaturated coastal waters. Large enhancements of CHBr3 and CH2Br2 were observed at both sites from 10 to 14 August 2004, coinciding with the passage of Tropical Storm Bonnie. During this period, fluxes of CHBr3 and CH2Br2 were 52.4 Ā± 21.0 and 9.1 Ā± 3.1 nmol māˆ’2 hāˆ’1, respectively. The average fluxes of CHBr3 and CH2Br2 during nonevent periods were 18.9 Ā± 12.3 and 2.6 Ā± 1.9 nmol māˆ’2 hāˆ’1, respectively. Additionally, CHBr3 and CH2Br2 were used as marine tracers in case studies to (1) evaluate the impact of tropical storms on emissions and distributions of marineā€derived gases in the coastal region and (2) characterize the transport of air masses during pollution episodes in the northeastern United States

    Dysbindin-1 in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of schizophrenia cases is reduced in an isoform-specific manner unrelated to altered dysbindin-1 gene expression

    DTNBP1 (dystrobrevin binding protein 1) remains one of the top candidate genes in schizophrenia. Reduced expression of this gene and the protein it encodes, dysbindin-1, has been reported in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of schizophrenia cases. It has not been established, however, if all dysbindin-1 isoforms are reduced in the DLPFC or if the reduction is associated with reduced DTNBP1 gene expression. Using Western blotting of whole-tissue lysates of the DLPFC with antibodies differentially sensitive to the three major isoforms of this protein (dysbindin-1A, -1B, and -1C), we found no significant differences between our schizophrenia cases and matched controls in dysbindin-1A or -1B, but did find a mean 46% reduction in dysbindin-1C in 71% of 28 case-control pairs (p = 0.022). This occurred in the absence of the one DTNBP1 risk haplotype for schizophrenia reported in the US and without alteration in levels of dysbindin-1C transcripts. Conversely, the absence of changes in the dysbindin-1A and -1B isoforms was accompanied by increased levels of their transcripts. We thus found no correspondence between alterations in dysbindin-1 gene and protein expression, the latter of which might be due to posttranslational modifications such as ubiquitination. Reduced DLPFC dysbindin-1C in schizophrenia probably occurs in PSDs, where we find dysbindin-1C to be heavily concentrated in the human brain. Given known postsynaptic effects of dysbindin-1 reductions in the rodent homolog of the prefrontal cortex, these findings suggest that reduced dysbindin-1C in the DLPFC may contribute to cognitive deficits of schizophrenia by promoting NMDA receptor hypofunction

    We describe the VISTA Science Archive (VSA) and its first public release of data from five of the six VISTA Public Surveys. The VSA exists to support the VISTA Surveys through their lifecycle: the VISTA Public Survey consortia can use it during their quality control assessment of survey data products before submission to the ESO Science Archive Facility (ESO SAF); it supports their exploitation of survey data prior to its publication through the ESO SAF; and, subsequently, it provides the wider community with survey science exploitation tools that complement the data product repository functionality of the ESO SAF. This paper has been written in conjunction with the first public release of public survey data through the VSA and is designed to help its users understand the data products available and how the functionality of the VSA supports their varied science goals. We describe the design of the database and outline the database-driven curation processes that take data from nightly pipeline-processed and calibrated FITS files to create science-ready survey datasets. Much of this design, and the codebase implementing it, derives from our earlier WFCAM Science Archive (WSA), so this paper concentrates on the VISTA-specific aspects and on improvements made to the system in the light of experience gained in operating the WSA.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures.
