Griggs and Corrothers: Historical Reality and Black Fiction

Sutton E. Griggs\u27s Imperium in Imperio and James D. Corrothers\u27s A Man They Didn\u27t Know are two early Afroamerican fictions which suggest a black alliance with foreign powers in the face of unrelenting racial injustice at home.1 Imperium in Imperio, published in 1899, has been described as the first political novel by a black American;2 and A Man They Didn\u27t Know, appearing in 1913, is probably the first Afroamerican fiction to suggest a specific alliance between American blacks, groups in Mexico, and the Japanese. Sutton E. Griggs is currently undergoing rediscovery, and Imperium in Imperio is by now well known to students of Afroamerican literature, if not to students of American literature in general. However, aspects of the historical context of Imperium in Imperio have been overlooked by literary scholars at significant cost to a complete appreciation of what Griggs is doing in the novel. Corrothers\u27s A Man They Didn\u27t Know has been overlooked in all respects. This highly interesting fictional work, comparable in important respects to Griggs\u27s novel, needs to be brought to the attention of students of American culture of various disciplines, and, like Imperium in Imperio, to be fully understood, it must be read in its historical context

Advisory opinion on responsibility and liability for international seabed mining (ITLOS Case No. 17): international environmental law in the seabed disputes chamber

On 1 February 2011, the Seabed Disputes Chamber (“the Chamber”) delivered its first Advisory Opinion. The Opinion provides useful guidance to the international community concerned with the deep seabed. First and foremost, the Chamber accomplished its task to assist the ISA with independent and impartial judicial interpretation of the Convention and related instruments. States that intend to extract valuable resources now know that they must evaluate their legal codes, administrative capacity, and their judicial enforcement mechanisms to determine where they fall short of the standards that the Chamber has identified. For most states it will be necessary to introduce new laws to provide the requisite rules, regulations and procedures. Entities seeking sponsorship will likely wish to work with these governments to develop a workable regime. Other entities, such as those interested in scientific research, other economic uses, and protection of the ocean and seabed resources, will want to assist with this process to ensure that their interests are respected and that developing states are given assistance to develop appropriate laws and enforcement capacity. Finally, the limitations and gaps in the Convention’s liability scheme have now been identified and await the international legal community’s attention

‘Skylarking’: Homosexual Panic and the Death of Private Kovco

This essay analyses key examples of language used during the recent case of Private Jake Kovco, the first Australian solider to die during Australia’s military involvement in Iraq. Kovco died not in combat but in his barracks room, shot in the head by his own pistol. In particular, the essay considers the implications of the military inquiry being told that Kovco may have accidentally shot himself while joking with his roommates ‘in a female/homosexual way’, the gun held to his head ‘almost to say this is so gay I would rather be dead’. Payne revisits Sedgwick’s concept of ‘homosexual panic’ to argue that the erasure of homophobia from the record of the incident (euphemised as ‘skylarking’) contributes to the normalisation of homophobia as an unworthy source of social and political panic, precisely because of the ‘systemic function’ Sedgwick attributes to homosexual panic in reinforcing heterosexual masculine entitlement

National Newspaper Analysis of the Press Coverage of Jesse Jackson\u27s 1984 Presidential Campaign: The Confirmation of the Candidate

Jesse Jackson\u27s 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns have motivated thousands of citizens throughout America to take a more active role in politics. The 1984 campaign witnessed many previously unregistered Americans actively participating in Jackson\u27s call to join the Rainbow Coalition. Four years later, Jackson once again hit a responsive chord within the American electorate, broadening his support base in his second run for the White House. His vibrant campaigns presented challenges not only to the American system of government, but also to accepted journalistic traditions in campaign reporting. Specifically, the dilemma has been a difficult one for journalists responsible for campaign coverage. How much coverage should a reporter give to Jesse Jackson\u27s campaign? Should he be treated like an Alan Cranston or Gary Hart in 1984, or a Paul Simon or Albert Gore in 1988? Or does the historical impact of his being the first black candidate to make a serious bid for the presidency warrant a different approach to press coverage? Highlighting this dilemma in the 1984 campaign, Dates and Gandy note: Jackson\u27s candidacy was a challenge for the press because on the one hand journalistic traditions would dictate that the ideological orientation of the media organization would constrain its coverage to be consistent with longstanding editorial practice.[1

Improving the conductance of carbon nanotube networks through resonant momentum exchange

We present a mechanism to improve the conductivity of carbon nanotube (CNT) networks by improving the conductance between CNTs of different chirality. We argue generally that a weak perturbation can greatly improve the inter-tube conductance by allowing momentum-conserving tunnelling. The mechanism is verified with a tight-binding model, allowing an investigation of its impact for a network containing a range of chiralities. We discuss practical implementations, and conclude that it may be effected by weak physical interactions, and therefore does not require chemical bonding to the CNTs.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

An Investigation of the Effects of Individual Differences on Technology Acceptance in the Workplace

The purpose of the current study was to test for moderating effects that conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness to experience have on relationships in the technology acceptance model. More specifically, the current study tested for previously overlooked moderation effects that these personality traits have on the relationships between behavioral intention and its predictors (i.e. perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and subjective norms). A sample of 96 employees from more than 16 industries participated in the study by completing an online survey. Results of the current study displayed a significant moderation effect by agreeableness on the relationship between perceived ease of use and behavioral intention, such that the relationship was stronger for those low in agreeableness. Additionally, openness to experience was found to moderate the relationship between subjective norms and behavioral intention when controlling for time of familiarity, such that the relationship was stronger for those high in openness to experience. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed
