Planar thin film SQUID with integral flux concentrator
A thin film SQUID is disclosed having improved flux concentration combined with simplicity of design and fabrication. The SQUID starts with a wafer like substrate having simple planar geometry. A large area of superconducting film is coated on the substrate, with a small open or uncoated area remaining at its center to define a SQUID loop, and a gap in the film formed, beginning at the outer circumferential edge of the substrate and extending radially inward to the open area. A Josephson junction is formed across the gap near the open area to interrupt the electrical continuity of the SQUID loop. A coil is attached to the surface of the substrate, electrically insulated from the superconducting film, and is energized to induce flux within the SQUID which is concentrated within the open area

A reference ontology approach to support global product-service production
The need to innovate and compete drives organisations to constantly seek new approaches to facilitate business and commerce. As market places become ever more globalised and digital economies grow, these organisations rely more heavily upon systems to design and deliver their products and services. Hence, when developing and operating a global production network the need for systems to interoperate between
different domains and contexts within a global production network becomes paramount if organisations are to succeed. This paper puts forwards a reference ontology that has been developed to enable the interoperation of software tools involved in the global production of new product-services systems (PSS). It sets out the levels of the reference ontology, detailing closely the product-service aspects. This has been
developed using a formal logic based approach. An example knowledge base has been created from industrial end user information with queries applied to this to provide a set of results showing the ability of the

Heterogeneity in ess transcriptional organization and variable contribution of the Ess/Type VII protein secretion system to virulence across closely related Staphylocccus aureus strains
The Type VII protein secretion system, found in Gram-positive bacteria, secretes small proteins, containing a conserved W-x-G amino acid sequence motif, to the growth medium. Staphylococcus aureus has a conserved Type VII secretion system, termed Ess, which is dispensable for laboratory growth but required for virulence. In this study we show that there are unexpected differences in the organization of the ess gene cluster between closely related strains of S. aureus. We further show that in laboratory growth medium different strains of S. aureus secrete the EsxA and EsxC substrate proteins at different growth points, and that the Ess system in strain Newman is inactive under these conditions. Systematic deletion analysis in S. aureus RN6390 is consistent with the EsaA, EsaB, EssA, EssB, EssC and EsxA proteins comprising core components of the secretion machinery in this strain. Finally we demonstrate that the Ess secretion machinery of two S. aureus strains, RN6390 and COL, is important for nasal colonization and virulence in the murine lung pneumonia model. Surprisingly, however, the secretion system plays no role in the virulence of strain SA113 under the same conditions
Measurements of the optical properties of thin films of silver and silver oxide
The optical properties of silver films and their oxides are measured to better characterize such films for use as sensors for atomic oxygen. Good agreement between properties of measured pure silver films and reported optical constants is observed. Similar comparisons for silver oxide have not been possible because of a lack of reported constants, but self-consistencies and discrepancies in our measured results are described
iGEM: a model system for team science and innovation
Teams are a primary source of innovation in science and technology. Rather
than examining the lone genius, scholarly and policy attention has shifted to
understanding how team interactions produce new and useful ideas. Yet the
organizational roots of innovation remain unclear, in part because of the
limitations of current data. This paper introduces the international
Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, a model system for studying
team science and innovation. By combining digital laboratory notebooks with
performance data from 2,406 teams over multiple years of participation, we
reveal shared dynamical and organizational patterns across teams and identify
features associated with team performance and success. This dataset makes
visible organizational behavior that is typically hidden, and thus
understudied, creating new opportunities for the science of science and
innovation.Comment: 78 pages including SI, 7 figures, 18 SI figure
An ontology supported risk assessment approach for the intelligent configuration of supply networks
As progress towards globalisation continues, organisations seek ever better ways with which to configure
and reconfigure their global production networks so as to better understand and be able to deal with risk. Such networks
are complex arrangements of different organisations from potentially diverse and divergent domains and geographical
locations. Moreover, greater focus is being put upon global production network systems and how these can
be better coordinated, controlled and assessed for risk, so that they are flexible and competitive advantage can be
gained from them within the market place. This paper puts forward a reference ontology to support risk assessment
for product-service systems applied to the domain of global production networks. The aim behind this is to help accelerate
the development of information systems by way of developing a common foundation to improve interoperability
and the seamless exchange of information between systems and organisations. A formal common logic based
approach has been used to develop the reference ontology, utilising end user information and knowledge from three
separate industrial domains. Results are presented which illustrate the ability of the approach, together with areas for

Secondary Sex Ratio among Women Exposed to Diethylstilbestrol in Utero
BACKGROUND. Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen widely prescribed to pregnant women during the mid-1900s, is a potent endocrine disruptor. Previous studies have suggested an association between endocrine-disrupting compounds and secondary sex ratio. METHODS. Data were provided by women participating in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) DES Combined Cohort Study. We used generalized estimating equations to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the relation of in utero DES exposure to sex ratio (proportion of male births). Models were adjusted for maternal age, child's birth year, parity, and cohort, and accounted for clustering among women with multiple pregnancies. RESULTS. The OR for having a male birth comparing DES-exposed to unexposed women was 1.05 (95% CI, 0.95-1.17). For exposed women with complete data on cumulative DES dose and timing (33%), those first exposed to DES earlier in gestation and to higher doses had the highest odds of having a male birth. The ORs were 0.91 (95% C, 0.65-1.27) for first exposure at ≥ 13 weeks gestation to < 5 g DES; 0.95 (95% CI, 0.71-1.27) for first exposure at ≥ 13 weeks to ≥ 5 g; 1.16 (95% CI, 0.96-1.41) for first exposure at < 13 weeks to < 5 g; and 1.24 (95% CI, 1.04-1.48) for first exposure at < 13 weeks to ≥ 5 g compared with no exposure. Results did not vary appreciably by maternal age, parity, cohort, or infertility history. CONCLUSIONS. Overall, no association was observed between in utero DES exposure and secondary sex ratio, but a significant increase in the proportion of male births was found among women first exposed to DES earlier in gestation and to a higher cumulative dose.National Cancer Institute (N01-CP-21168, N01-CP-51017, N01-CP-01289
