Development of an interchangeable end effector mechanism for the Ranger telerobotic vehicle
The Ranger program at the Space Systems Laboratory (SSL) at the University of Maryland is a demonstration of an extremely low cost, space flight experiment. The Ranger vehicle is designed to perform teleoperated spacecraft maintenance. Completing the various tasks included in spacecraft maintenance requires several specific tools. This paper describes the Ranger interchangeable end effector mechanism (IEEM). Its design allows Ranger to change end effectors to utilize the appropriate tool for the various tasks. The Ranger vehicle is designed with four manipulators. A seven degree-of-freedom (DOF) grappling manipulator securely attaches the vehicle to the work site. A 6 DOF camera positioning manipulator allows the operator to position a stereo pair of video cameras for visual feedback. The two remaining manipulators are the 7 DOF dexterous arms. They are the primary means by which Ranger accomplishes its required tasks. At the end of each of these dexterous manipulators is an IEEM. This paper begins with a brief overview of the Space Systems Laboratory and the Ranger program. The constraints leading to the requirements for an IEEM are described. The following section then describes the design strategies and the down selection process resulting in two candidate designs, taper and pneumatic connector type. Next, the leading candidate design is described in detail, followed by a preliminary discussion of failure modes and planned testing. The paper concludes with a brief review and a section discussing future work
A Nonlinear Theory for Predicting the Effects of Unsteady Laminar, Turbulent, or Transitional Boundary Layers on the Attenuation of Shock Waves in a Shock Tube with Experimental Comparison
The linearized attenuation theory of NACA Technical Note 3375 is modified in the following manner: (a) an unsteady compressible local skin-friction coefficient is employed rather than the equivalent steady-flow incompressible coefficient; (b) a nonlinear approach is used to permit application of the theory to large attenuations; and (c) transition effects are considered. Curves are presented for predicting attenuation for a shock pressure ratio up to 20 and a range of shock-tube Reynolds numbers. Comparison of theory and experimental data for shock-wave strengths between 1.5 and 10 over a wide range of Reynolds numbers shows good agreement with the nonlinear theory evaluated for a transition Reynolds number of 2.5 X 10(exp 5)
UV Imaging Polarimetry of the peculiar Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 477
We present the results of UV imaging polarimetry of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk
477 taken by the Faint Object Camera onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).
From a previous HST UV image (lambda ~ 2180A), Mrk 477 has been known to have
a pointlike bright UV hotspot in the central region, peculiar among nearby
Seyfert 2 galaxies. There are also claims of UV/optical variability, unusual
for a Seyfert 2 galaxy. Our data show that there is an off-nuclear scattering
region ~ 0."6 (~ 500 pc) NE from the hotspot. The data, after the subtraction
of the instrumental effect due to this bright hotspot region, might indicate
that the scattered light is also detected in the central 0."2 radius region and
is extended to a very wide angle. The hotspot location is consistent with the
symmetry center of the PA pattern, which represents the location of the hidden
nucleus, but our data do not provide a strong upper limit to the distance
between the symmetry center and the hotspot. We have obtained high spatial
resolution color map of the continuum which shows that the nuclear spiral arm
of 0."4 scale (~ 300pc) is significantly bluer than the off-nuclear mirror and
the hotspot region. The nature of the hotspot is briefly discussed.Comment: To appear in Ap
Open Bar - a Brouwerian Intuitionistic Logic with a Pinch of Excluded Middle
One of the differences between Brouwerian intuitionistic logic and classical logic is their treatment of time. In classical logic truth is atemporal, whereas in intuitionistic logic it is time-relative. Thus, in intuitionistic logic it is possible to acquire new knowledge as time progresses, whereas the classical Law of Excluded Middle (LEM) is essentially flattening the notion of time stating that it is possible to decide whether or not some knowledge will ever be acquired. This paper demonstrates that, nonetheless, the two approaches are not necessarily incompatible by introducing an intuitionistic type theory along with a Beth-like model for it that provide some middle ground. On one hand they incorporate a notion of progressing time and include evolving mathematical entities in the form of choice sequences, and on the other hand they are consistent with a variant of the classical LEM. Accordingly, this new type theory provides the basis for a more classically inclined Brouwerian intuitionistic type theory

As we tackle the disproportionate burden of chronic illness and access to quality health care of an increasingly diverse population, it is critical to infuse cultural and linguistic competence in all sectors of health care training. To reach the Healthy People 2020 goal of eliminating health disparities, health and human services education must provide the knowledge and experience to understand the root causes of health disparities, as well as strategies to advance ongoing cultural and linguistic competence
Energy Level Statistics of Quantum Dots
We investigate the charging energy level statistics of disordered interacting
electrons in quantum dots by numerical calculations using the Hartree
approximation. The aim is to obtain a global picture of the statistics as a
function of disorder and interaction strengths. We find Poisson statistics at
very strong disorder, Wigner- Dyson statistics for weak disorder and
interactions, and a Gaussian intermediate regime. These regimes are as expected
from previous studies and fundamental considerations, but we also find
interesting and rather broad crossover regimes. In particular, intermediate
between the Gaussian and Poisson regimes we find a two-sided exponential
distribution for the energy level spacings. In comparing with experiment, we
find that this distribution may be realized in some quantum dots.Comment: 21 pages 10 figure
