    Pigment analysis by Raman microscopy and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) of thirteenth to fourteenth century illuminations and cuttings from Bologna

    Non-destructive pigment analysis by Raman microscopy (RM) and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) has been carried out on some Bolognese illuminations and cuttings chosen to represent the beginnings, evolution and height of Bolognese illuminated manuscript production. Dating to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and held in a private collection, the study provides evidence for the pigments generally used in this period. The results, which are compared with those obtained for other north Italian artwork, show the developments in usage of artistic materials and technique. Also addressed in this study is an examination of the respective roles of RM and pXRF analysis in this area of technical art history

    A connection between item/subtest regression and the Rasch model

    The purpose of this paper is to link empirical Bayes methods with two specific topics in item response theory--item/subtest regression, and testing the goodness of fit of the Rasch model--under the assumptions of local independence and sufficiency. It is shown that item/subtest regression results in empirical Bayes estimates only if the Rasch model holds. Additionally, it is shown that a newly-derived exploratory goodness-of-fit test for the Rasch model, which does not need item and person parameter estimates, can be seen as an empirical Bayes test. This test compares the observed proportions of correct answers to one specific item, given any pattern that leads to a number-right score

    Diffractive sidewall grating coupler: towards 2D free-space optics on chip.

    Silicon photonics has been the subject of intense research efforts. In order to implement complex integrated silicon photonic devices and systems, a wide range of robust building blocks is needed. Waveguide couplers are fundamental devices in integrated optics, enabling different functionalities such as power dividers, spot-size converters, coherent hybrids and fiber-chip coupling interfaces, to name a few. In this work we propose a new type of nanophotonic coupler based on sidewall grating (SIGRA) concept. SIGRAs have been used in the Bragg regime, for filtering applications, as well as in the sub-wavelength regime in multimode interference (MMI) couplers. However, the use of SIGRAs in the radiation regime has been very limited. Specifically, a coarse wavelength division multiplexer was proposed and experimentally validated. In this work we study the use of SIGRAs in the diffractive regime as a mean to couple the light between a silicon wire waveguide mode and a continuum of slab waveguide modes. We also propose an original technique for designing SIGRA based couplers, enabling the synthesis of arbitrary radiation field profile by Floquet- Bloch analysis of individual diffracting elements while substantially alleviating computational load. Results are further validated by 3D FDTD simulations which confirm that the radiated field profile closely matches the target design field.Universidad de Málaga.     Porting a visualization package from IRIX to NT : what will I get, what will I pay?

    We discuss our experiences in porting a moderately large scientific visualization environment from IRIX to NT~4.0. Two porting strategies have been taken: a port via a POSIX emulation layer and a native NT port. POSIX compliant code can be ported to NT with relatively little effort if the code adheres to general accepted programming principles, such as modularity and encapsulation. The performance of a modern 3D Wintel machine is quite satisfactory for a variety of scientific desktop tasks. We have compared the performance of a 2 CPU Dell OptiPlex with FireGL 4000 graphics option to various SGI desktop workstations

    The monthly incidence of listeriosis infections in England and Wales had 2 sudden increases during April 2001 (41%) and March 2003 (48%). Although no causative association is demonstrated, these increases correspond to key dates relating to the onset and aftermath of the 2001 foot and mouth disease outbreak in the United Kingdom

    An ADER discontinuous Galerkin method on moving meshes for Liouville's equation of geometrical optics

    Liouville's equation describes light propagation through an optical system. It governs the evolution of an energy distribution on phase space. This energy distribution is discontinuous across optical interfaces. Curved optical interfaces manifest themselves as moving boundaries on phase space. In this paper, an ADER discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method on a moving mesh is applied to solve Liouville's equation. In the ADER approach a temporal Taylor series is computed by replacing temporal derivatives with spatial derivatives using the Cauchy-Kovalewski procedure. The result is a fully discrete explicit scheme of arbitrary high order of accuracy. A moving mesh is not sufficient to be able to solve Liouville's equation numerically for the optical systems considered in this article. To that end, we combine the scheme with a new method we refer to as sub-cell interface method. When dealing with optical interfaces in phase space, non-local boundary conditions arise. These are incorporated in the DG method in an energy-preserving manner. Numerical experiments validate energy-preservation up to machine precision and show the high order of accuracy. Furthermore, the DG method is compared to quasi-Monte Carlo ray tracing for two examples showing that the DG method yields better accuracy in the same amount of computational time.</p

    Essential role for proteinase-activated receptor-2 in arthritis

    Using physiological, pharmacological, and gene disruption approaches, we demonstrate that proteinase-activated receptor-2 (PAR-2) plays a pivotal role in mediating chronic inflammation. Using an adjuvant monoarthritis model of chronic inflammation, joint swelling was substantially inhibited in PAR-2-deficient mice, being reduced by more than fourfold compared with wild-type mice, with virtually no histological evidence of joint damage. Mice heterozygous for PAR-2 gene disruption showed an intermediate phenotype. PAR-2 expression, normally limited to endothelial cells in small arterioles, was substantially upregulated 2 weeks after induction of inflammation, both in synovium and in other periarticular tissues. PAR-2 agonists showed potent proinflammatory effects as intra-articular injection of ASKH95, a novel synthetic PAR-2 agonist, induced prolonged joint swelling and synovial hyperemia. Given the absence of the chronic inflammatory response in the PAR-2-deficient mice, our findings demonstrate a key role for PAR-2 in mediating chronic inflammation, thereby identifying a novel and important therapeutic target for the management of chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
