    After the In-Service Course: Challenges of Technology Integration

    This case study chronicles one teacher\u27s experience in the semester after an in-service course, Using Technology for Instruction and Assessment. Results suggest that success in the course and good intentions do not necessarily translate into dramatic change in methods or media of instruction. Student mobility and special needs, unexpected administrative mandates, the anxiety of being judged as competent based on standardized test results, poorly designed classrooms, insufficient time to master new software, and habitual ways of conceptualizing what and how students should learnall complicate efforts to help students use computers to construct meaning and represent their learning to others. Certainly, a professional development course is just one variable in a complex equation which has, as its solution, transformative teaching

    A hybrid rocket is a system consisting of a solid fuel grain and a gaseous or liquid oxidizer. Figure 1 shows three popular hybrid propulsion cycles that are under current consideration. NASA MSFC has teamed with industry to test two hybrid propulsion systems that will allow scaling to motors of potential interest for Titan and Atlas systems, as well as encompassing the range of interest for SEI lunar ascent stages and National Launch System Cargo Transfer Vehicle (NLS CTV) and NLS deorbit systems. Hybrid systems also offer advantages as moderate-cost, environmentally acceptable propulsion system.     The widespread appearance of large scale vacuum systems operating commercially in the micron range of pressures has initiated a new field of industrial endeavor, vacuum engineering. The ever increasing number of applications of vacuo in commercial processes and laboratory research has stimulated the design and improvement of vacuum equipment, and at the present time equipment may be obtained to meet practically any need. In turn, the variety of available tools has directed the engineers attention to improving old processes and developing new ones through the utilization of vacuum techniques ... The possibility of producing a relatively high purity silver in a single step by distilling off the zinc and lead in a vacuum was suggested as early as 1912 by H.J. Humphries in discussing a paper by Turner but until recently no experimental work on this possibility has been published. In 1949, experiments were conducted by Mr. C.H. Shih on the distillation of artificial and commercial crusts in a small vacuum furnace. Mr. Shih\u27s findings were extremely encouraging and it was decided to carry the investigation to the pilot plant stage.     Each year shows an Increased enrollment in the universities and colleges of California. The compulsory education law has served to keep more students in high school a longer time and upon graduation many of these pupils desire to attend an institution of higher learning. This fact, together with the influx of people into California from all parts of the United States and abroad to make their homes, has added materially to the numbers of prospective college students. It has been the policy of the colleges and universities in the State of California to admit graduates from accredited high schools without examination if the applicant hag the unqualified recommendation of the principal of the high school from which he graduates. This group Is designated as recommended students, a group which in most high schools comprises not more than twenty to fifty per cent of the graduating classes. The majority of the higher institutions of California have allowed the decision as to who should he recommended to remain with the secondary school principal. The College of the Pacific has followed the policy of accepting recommended graduates of accredited high schools who present fifteen entrance units, at least twelve of which must be of recommended grade
