    A dust disk surrounding the young A star HR4796A

    We report the codiscovery of the spatially-resolved dust disk of the Vega-like star HR 4796A. Images of the thermal dust emission at Ī»=18Ī¼\lambda = 18 \mum show an elongated structure approximately 200 AU in diameter surrounding the central A0V star. The position angle of the disk, 30āˆ˜Ā±10āˆ˜30^{\circ} \pm 10^{\circ}, is consistent to the position angle of the M companion star, 225āˆ˜225^{\circ}, suggesting that the disk-binary system is being seen nearly along its orbital plane. The surface brightness distribution of the disk is consistent with the presence of an inner disk hole of approximately 50 AU radius, as was originally suggested by Jura et al. on the basis of the infrared spectrum. HR 4796 is a unique system among the Vega-like or Ī²\beta Pictoris stars in that the M star companion (a weak-emission T Tauri star) shows that the system is relatively young, āˆ¼8Ā±3\sim 8 \pm 3 Myr. The inner disk hole may provide evidence for coagulation of dust into larger bodies on a timescale similar to that suggested for planet formation in the solar system.Comment: 12 pages, 3 PostScript figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Surface History of Mercury: Implications for Terrestrial Planets

    A working hypothesis of Mercury's history is presented. We infer the surface of Mercury to record a sequence of events broadly similar to those recorded on the moon, implying similar histories of impact bombardment. The oldest terrain so n Mercury seem to be better preserved from modification by ejecta from subsequently formed impact basins because of higher surface gravity. The large lunarlike impact craters on Mercury can be interpreted as part of a distinct episode of bombardment which may have affected all the terrestrial planets about 4 b.y. ago. The light cratering accumulated on the surfaces of the Mercurian smooth plains is similar in diameter/frequency relationship to that of the lunar maria and of the oldest Martian plains units, consistent with recent interpretations of lunar and Martian flux histories by Wetherill(1974) and Soderblom et al. (1974). A straightforward interpretation of the Mercurian surface record thus supports recent order of magnitude increases in age estimates of many Martian features discovered by Mariner 9 but is not conclusive. The large core inferred for Mercury combined with the lack of recognizable evidence of past atmospheric activity is more easily understood in terms of radially heterogeneous accumulation than in terms of differentiation of a homogeneous planet. Early core cooling may be reflected by widespread evidence of crustal shortening. However, Mercury's surface seems little affected by any tectonic, atmospheric, or volcanic processes for the last 3 b.y. or so, raising questions concerning (1) the relationship of the origin of Mercury's magnetic field to that of earth's and (2) the primary cause of volcanic flooding, which may have begun, and ended, approximately synchronously on Mercury and the moon

    Preliminary imaging results from the second Mercury encounter

    The second Mercury encounter has resulted in the acquisition of about 360 pictures of the south polar regions which provide a reliable cartographic and geologic tie between the two sides of the planet photographed on the first encounter. Stereoscopic coverage of large areas of the southern hemisphere was obtained by combining Mercury 1 and 2 pictures taken at different viewing angles. The south polar regions consist of heavily cratered terrain and intercrater plains interspersed with patches of smooth plains. No large areas of smooth plains similar to those surrounding Caloris occur in the south polar regions. No new types of terrain have been recognized, but lobate scarps are common. The second largest basin seen by Mariner 10 (āˆ¼600-km diameter) has been confirmed on the new photography. At high solar elevations the surface displays an abundance of rays and rayed craters

    Relationship between migraine history and breast cancer risk among premenopausal and postmenopausal women.

    Both migraine and breast cancer are hormonally mediated diseases, and it is biologically plausible that women with a history of migraine may have a reduced breast cancer risk. However, this relationship has only been assessed in a single relatively small study that was unable to assess the effect of migraine triggers, which are also well-established breast cancer risk factors (e.g., use of alcohol and exogenous hormones), on the inverse association observed. Utilizing data on 4,568 breast cancer cases and 4,678 controls who participated in a multicenter population-based case-control study in the United States, we evaluated the association between migraine history and breast cancer risk using unconditional logistic regression. Migraine history data were obtained from structured in-person interviews. Women with a history of migraine had a reduced risk of breast cancer [odds ratio, 0.74; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.66-0.82]. This risk did not differ by menopausal status, age at migraine diagnosis, use of prescription migraine medications, or when analyses were restricted to women who avoided various migraine triggers (including alcohol, exogenous hormones, and smoking). These data support a previous finding that a history of migraine may be associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. It extends the prior report in observing that this relationship holds for both premenopausal and postmenopausal women and is independent of exposure to common migraine triggers

    Breast cancer risk and hormone receptor status in older women by parity, age of first birth, and breastfeeding: a case-control study.

    BACKGROUND: Early age at first birth and multiparity reduce the risk of estrogen receptor-progesterone receptor (ERPR)-positive breast cancer, whereas breastfeeding reduces the risk of both ERPR-positive and ERPR-negative cancers. METHODS: We used multivariable logistic regression analysis to investigate whether age at first birth ( or =25 years) and breastfeeding (ever/never) modify the long-term effect of parity on risk of ERPR-positive and ERPR-negative cancer using 1,457 incident breast cancer cases and 1,455 controls ages > or =55 years who participated in the Women's Contraceptive and Reproductive Experiences Study. RESULTS: Women who gave birth before age 25 years had a 36% reduced risk of breast cancer compared with nulligravida that was not observed for women who started their families at an older age (P(heterogeneity) = 0.0007). This protective effect was restricted to ERPR-positive breast cancer (P(heterogeneity) = 0.004). Late age at first birth increased the risk of ERPR-negative cancers. Additional births reduced the risk of ERPR-positive cancers among women with an early first birth (P(trend) = 0.0001) and among women who breastfed (P(trend) = 0.004) but not among older mothers or those who never breastfed. In women with a late first birth who never breastfed, multiparity was associated with increased risk of breast cancer. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the effect of parity on a woman's long-term risk of breast cancer is modified by age at first full-term pregnancy and possibly by breastfeeding

    Duration of activity on lobateā€scarp thrust faults on Mercury

    Lobate scarps, landforms interpreted as the surface manifestation of thrust faults, are widely distributed across Mercury and preserve a record of its history of crustal deformation. Their formation is primarily attributed to the accommodation of horizontal shortening of Mercury's lithosphere in response to cooling and contraction of the planet's interior. Analyses of images acquired by the Mariner 10 and MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft during flybys of Mercury showed that thrust faults were active at least as far back in time as near the end of emplacement of the largest expanses of smooth plains. However, the full temporal extent of thrust fault activity on Mercury, particularly the duration of this activity following smooth plains emplacement, remained poorly constrained. Orbital images from the MESSENGER spacecraft reveal previously unrecognized stratigraphic relations between lobate scarps and impact craters of differing ages and degradation states. Analysis of these stratigraphic relations indicates that contraction has been a widespread and longā€lived process on the surface of Mercury. Thrust fault activity had initiated by a time near the end of the late heavy bombardment of the inner solar system and continued through much or all of Mercury's subsequent history. Such deformation likely resulted from the continuing secular cooling of Mercury's interior
