    Generating Shadows for Urban Design

    Get PDF
Through advancements in 3D technology, one is now able to analyze the impact of sunlight on the built environment by way of studying shadows and the amounts thereof. Urban planners, property developers, and other professionals are looking to expand upon, or work within, the premise of the right to light. The ability to know when and where shadows exist is a precursor to using that information to make better informed decisions about our environment. The ability to obtain information about shadows and, in turn, store that data in an accessible format that provides visualization possibilities is the desired outcome

A Photographic Record of Selected Industries of Box Elder County

    Get PDF
This thesis is primarily a photographic study of past and present industries of Box Elder County, Utah. A variety of industries have been established in this county since it was first settled in 1851. This study illustrates the varying degrees of growth and recession of industries within the county and also depicts the many changes in industry over the past century. The main purpose of the study was to gather photographs and pertinent information concerning the major industries of the county. It was proposed that this material would be useful to industrial arts teachers in their responsibility of presenting industry to the students in their classes. Others interested in industry would also benefit from the study. Research was done to find photographs and information in the major areas of Minerals, Manufacturing, Electric Light and Power, Transportation, and Communication. A total of 128 photographs are presented, some dating back as far as the 1860\u27s when early industries were comparatively new

Strain-dependent solid surface stress and the stiffness of soft contacts

Surface stresses have recently emerged as a key player in the mechanics of highly compliant solids. The classic theories of contact mechanics describe adhesion with a compliant substrate as a competition between surface energies driving deformation to establish contact and bulk elasticity resisting this. However, it has recently been shown that surface stresses provide an additional restoring force that can compete with and even dominate over elasticity in highly compliant materials, especially when length scales are small compared to the ratio of the surface stress to the elastic modulus, ÎĄ/E\Upsilon/E. Here, we investigate experimentally the contribution of surface stresses to the force of adhesion. We find that the elastic and capillary contributions to the adhesive force are of similar magnitude, and that both are required to account for measured adhesive forces between rigid silica spheres and compliant, silicone gels. Notably, the strain-dependence of the solid surface stress contributes significantly to the stiffness of soft solid contacts.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

Analysis of the evolution of research contributions by The Accounting Review, 1926-2005

In her presidential message to the American Accounting Association (AAA) in August 2005, Judy Rayburn discussed the issue of the relatively low citation rate for accounting research compared to finance, management, and marketing. Rayburn concluded that accounting\u27s low citation rate was due to a lack of diversity in topics and research methods. In this paper, we provide a review of the AAA\u27s flagship journal, The Accounting Review (TAR), following its 80 years of publication, and describe why some recent AAA leaders believe that significant changes should be made to the journal\u27s publication and editorial policies. At issue is whether scholarly accounting research is overly focused on mathematical analysis and empirical research, or accountics as it has sometimes been called, at the expense of research that benefits the general practice of accountancy and discovery research on more interesting topics. We conclude from our review of TAR that after mostly publishing research about accounting practices for the first 40 years, a sweeping change in editorial policy occurred in the 1960s and 1970s that narrowly defined scholarly research in accounting as that which employs accountics

Investigating A Method to Modify Student Social Media Behavior

Empirically validated interventions designed to modify student social media behavior are lacking. The current study was undertaken to design and test the effectiveness of just such an intervention. Students, acting in the role of hiring managers, were asked to rank job candidates based on their resumes and social media profiles. The goal of the intervention was to get students to see how social media and posting behavior can negatively affect future employability. Through a better understanding of the relationship between social media and employability, it was hoped that students would modify their own posting behavior. Although the intervention was not found to be effective, the results of the quasi-experiment provide insights that can be used to develop and test future interventions. Of particular interest were the students’ diverse and sometimes surprising assumptions about social media usage and how it may be evaluated in a professional context
