The 500 Cities Project-Local Data for Better Health-is a collaboration among the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the CDC Foundation, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), whose purpose is to provide high quality small area estimates for behavioral risk factors that influence health status, for health outcomes, and the use of clinical preventive services. These estimates can be used to identify emerging health problems and to develop and implement of effective, targeted public health prevention activities. This report is specific to Buffalo, NY

Origins of the Combinatorial Basis of Entropy

The combinatorial basis of entropy, given by Boltzmann, can be written $H = N^{-1} \ln \mathbb{W}$, where $H$ is the dimensionless entropy, $N$ is the number of entities and $\mathbb{W}$ is number of ways in which a given realization of a system can occur (its statistical weight). This can be broadened to give generalized combinatorial (or probabilistic) definitions of entropy and cross-entropy: $H=\kappa (\phi(\mathbb{W}) +C)$ and $D=-\kappa (\phi(\mathbb{P}) +C)$, where $\mathbb{P}$ is the probability of a given realization, $\phi$ is a convenient transformation function, $\kappa$ is a scaling parameter and $C$ an arbitrary constant. If $\mathbb{W}$ or $\mathbb{P}$ satisfy the multinomial weight or distribution, then using $\phi(\cdot)=\ln(\cdot)$ and $\kappa=N^{-1}$, $H$ and $D$ asymptotically converge to the Shannon and Kullback-Leibler functions. In general, however, $\mathbb{W}$ or $\mathbb{P}$ need not be multinomial, nor may they approach an asymptotic limit. In such cases, the entropy or cross-entropy function can be {\it defined} so that its extremization ("MaxEnt'' or "MinXEnt"), subject to the constraints, gives the ``most probable'' (``MaxProb'') realization of the system. A discussion of selected aspects of privacy, confidentiality, and anonymity in computerized conferencing

This paper presents a discussion of the potential uses of privacy, confidentiality and anonymity in computerized conferencing. Section I begins with definitions of the concepts, their aspects and allied terms; and briefly discusses their use in general communications and problem-solving activities. Section II explores their use in social research, particularly the survey method, a field that may yield useful analogues for computerized conferencing. Section III outlines the various functions of privacy, confidentiality and anonymity that have been proposed for their constructive use in computerized conferencing. Section IV reports various difficulties and compromises that have been encountered to date in striving to achieve true privacy, confidentiality or anonymity in computerized conferencing. Section V gives preliminary estimates of various ways of enhancing the concepts through computerized conferencing

The cover and the forward claim that PC 315/1-1-63 is a publication of the, then new, intelligence Production Center of the Defense Intelligence Agency. This appears to be an excellent technical-intelligence type document about American weapons and equipment. It could just as easily be a product of Soviet military intelligence. It contains descriptions and illustrations about various categories of landing craft and equipment. The categories of material covered include: Landing Craft Landing Ships Amphibious Vehicles Support Ships (including command ships and fire support ships) and Auxiliary equipment The appendices contain information about: The capacities of various types of craft Comparisons of various type of craft Samples of beaching loads for various types of craft In addition, the document contains a lengthy list of classification symbols for landing craft. It also contains a glossary. The distribution list is much more extensive than the distribution list for a typical Engineer Intelligence Guide

Center for Research on Sustainable Forests 2013 Annual Report

Together, all of the scientists associated with the CRSF brought a total of $1.85 million in outside revenue to support forest research in Maine and the northern forest. Of that,$1.36 million (or 73%) was spent directly on the research. The Maine Economic Improvement Fund (MEIF) provides base operating funds for the CRSF. The $144K investment by MEIF this year leveraged another$1.71 million from outside sources to support the CRSF mission; thus providing a 12:1 return. A hallmark of the success of the CRSF research effort is also measured by the 130 organizations that collaborated directly in the research presented in this report. Results from CRSF research were presented this year in 32 journal articles; 32 book chapters, theses, and research reports; and 130 presentations at conferences and meetings
