The ‘transaction X-ray’: understanding construction procurement
This paper presents the results of a case study, the Construction Case, which examines procurement practices within the UK construction supply chain and compares these with a more general UK sample taken from non-construction sectors. Using a qualitative methodology, the approaches to relationship management and buyer value perception are graphically mapped, using an innovative ‘transaction X-ray’ technique. The Construction Case considers procurement transactions conducted at various points along the construction value chain: the client, the construction firm and the specialist contractor. Recognising that the research design favours a small sample size, and thus limits generalisability beyond the boundaries of the case, the paper finds that construction industry procurement operates in an adversarial and largely arm’s-length manner. While procurement practice is found to share common aspects with other industrial sectors, the case demonstrates that the construction industry is more adversarial and less collaborative than is the average found across the other sectors examined. The paper outlines a useful framework whereby construction practitioners can evaluate elements of procurement practice within their own organisations, and also signposts the required direction for future research in order to reflect the gap, suggested by the case, between current normative theory and construction procurement practice
Professional buyers and the value proposition
Lusch (2011) considers Service-Dominant Logic (S-DL) to be an appropriate lens through which to view supply chain research, and suggests it be used to better understand value. The authors, accepting a founding premise of S-DL that value is phenomenologically determined by the recipient, adopt a qualitative methodology to penetrate the inherent complexity and commercial confidentiality of the buyer-seller relationship. In particular the authors make a comparative evaluation as to how the wider, psychological needs of the buyer interact with the effects of the organisational goals of their businesses. The study uses a longitudinal research design, involving web-based diaries and follow-up interviews to develop the empirical understanding of the dominant patterns of buyer value perception that, within the context of the investigation, both challenge extant thinking and informs the debate regarding the approaches to combining value creation and value capture (Skilton, 2014). The explanations offered suggest that exchange value achieves a greater buyer focus than utility value, and acknowledges the relative importance of buyer value perceptions that are not directly aligned with organisational objectives. These findings, it is argued, may cause organisations to reflect on their procurement policies and procedures as they seek to engage with potential suppliers
Heterobiaryl synthesis by contractive C-C coupling via P(V) intermediates
Heterobiaryls composed of pyridine and diazine rings are key components of pharmaceuticals and are often central to pharmacological function. We present an alternative approach to metal-catalyzed cross-coupling to make heterobiaryls using contractive phosphorus C–C couplings, also termed phosphorus ligand coupling reactions. The process starts by regioselective phosphorus substitution of the C–H bonds para to nitrogen in two successive heterocycles; ligand coupling is then triggered via acidic alcohol solutions to form the heterobiaryl bond. Mechanistic studies imply that ligand coupling is an asynchronous process involving migration of one heterocycle to the ipso position of the other around a central pentacoordinate P(V) atom. The strategy can be applied to complex drug-like molecules containing multiple reactive sites and polar functional groups, and also enables convergent coupling of drug fragments and late-stage heteroarylation of pharmaceuticals
The pregnant man: race, difference and subjectivity in Alan Paton’s Kalahari writing
In South African imaginative writing and scholarly research, there is currently an extensive
and wide-ranging interest in the ‘Bushman’, either as a tragic figure of colonial history, as
a contested site of misrepresentation, or even as an exemplary model of environmental
consciousness. Writing and research about ‘Bushmen’ has not only become pervasive in
the academy, but also a site of controversy and theoretical contestation. It is in this context
that this paper investigates the meaning and significance of ‘Bushmen’ for Alan Paton, one
of South Africa’s most well-known writers. Paton’s writing is not usually associated with
‘Bushman’ studies, yet this article shows that the ‘Bushman’ became a highly charged and
ambivalent figure in his imagination. Paton’s problematic ideas are contextualised more
carefully by looking at the broader context of South African letters. The article initially
analyses Paton’s representation of ‘Bushmen’ in his Lost City of the Kalahari travel narrative
(1956, published in 2005. Pietermaritzburg: KZN Press), and also discusses unpublished
archival photographs. A study of the figure of the ‘Bushman’ throughout the entire
corpus of his writing, ranging from early journalism to late autobiography, allows us to
trace the shift of his views, enabling us to reflect not only on Paton’s thinking about racial
otherness, but also gauge the extent to which his encounter with the Kalahari Bushmen

Strategic toolkits: seniority, usage and performance in the German SME machinery and equipment sector
This paper examines the strategic tool kit, from a human resource management (HRM) perspective, in terms of usage and impact. Research to date has tended to consider usage, assuming to a certain extent that knowledge and understanding of particular tools suggest that practitioners value them. The research on which this paper is based builds upon the idea that usage indicates satisfaction, but develops the usage theme to investigate which decision-makers are actually engaged in both tool appliance and the strategic process. Of particular interest to the researchers are the educational background, age and seniority of the decision-makers. In addition, potential links with HRM and organizational performance are also explored. The context of the research, the German machinery and equipment sector, provides an insight into the industry's ability to sustain growth in face of increasing international competition. The paper calls for a greater awareness, from a human resource perspective, and utilization of strategic management practice and associated decision-making aids
Fast pixelated detectors in scanning transmission electron microscopy. Part II: post acquisition data processing, visualisation, and structural characterisation
Fast pixelated detectors incorporating direct electron detection (DED)
technology are increasingly being regarded as universal detectors for scanning
transmission electron microscopy (STEM), capable of imaging under multiple
modes of operation. However, several issues remain around the post acquisition
processing and visualisation of the often very large multidimensional STEM
datasets produced by them. We discuss these issues and present open source
software libraries to enable efficient processing and visualisation of such
datasets. Throughout, we provide examples of the analysis methodologies
presented, utilising data from a 256×256 pixel Medipix3 hybrid DED
detector, with a particular focus on the STEM characterisation of the
structural properties of materials. These include the techniques of virtual
detector imaging; higher order Laue zone analysis; nanobeam electron
diffraction; and scanning precession electron diffraction. In the latter, we
demonstrate nanoscale lattice parameter mapping with a fractional precision
≤6×10−4 (0.06%)
Outcomes Associated With Early vs Late Initiation of Exclusive Enteral Feeding Regimens Following Laparoscopic Gastrostomy Tube Placement in the Pediatric Patient
ObjectivesDespite frequent placement of pediatric laparoscopic gastrostomy tubes (GTs), no rigorous evaluation of initial feeding and advancement regimens exists. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether early enteral feeding after GT placement is associated with increased symptoms, procedural complications, or length of stay (LOS).MethodsIn this retrospective cohort study, the records of all patients at a tertiary care pediatric hospital who had gastrostomy placement were reviewed. Only patients fed exclusively via gastrostomy were included. Feeding was monitored starting with the first postoperative feed and subsequently in 24- hour increments. Adverse events were recorded based on clinical documentation.ResultsA total of 480 patients met inclusion criteria. Patients who started feeds between 24 and 36Â hours had a shorter LOS compared with those who started at 36- 48Â hours (P = .0072) or >48Â hours (P < .0001). Patients requiring - ¥60Â hours to reach goal feeds had significantly longer LOS than the other groups. There was no difference in the distribution of the LOS based on percentage of goal feeds initiated. Microarray analysis of microRNA expression in the developing mammalian brain
BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs are a large new class of tiny regulatory RNAs found in nematodes, plants, insects and mammals. MicroRNAs are thought to act as post-transcriptional modulators of gene expression. In invertebrates microRNAs have been implicated as regulators of developmental timing, neuronal differentiation, cell proliferation, programmed cell death and fat metabolism. Little is known about the roles of microRNAs in mammals. RESULTS: We isolated 18-26 nucleotide RNAs from developing rat and monkey brains. From the sequences of these RNAs and the sequences of the rat and human genomes we determined which of these small RNAs are likely to have derived from stem-loop precursors typical of microRNAs. Next, we developed a microarray technology suitable for detecting microRNAs and printed a microRNA microarray representing 138 mammalian microRNAs corresponding to the sequences of the microRNAs we cloned as well as to other known microRNAs. We used this microarray to determine the profile of microRNAs expressed in the developing mouse brain. We observed a temporal wave of expression of microRNAs, suggesting that microRNAs play important roles in the development of the mammalian brain. CONCLUSION: We describe a microarray technology that can be used to analyze the expression of microRNAs and of other small RNAs. MicroRNA microarrays offer a new tool that should facilitate studies of the biological roles of microRNAs. We used this method to determine the microRNA expression profile during mouse brain development and observed a temporal wave of gene expression of sequential classes of microRNAs
Regiodivergent nucleophilic fluorination under hydrogen bonding catalysis: a computational and experimental study
The controlled programming of regiochemical outcomes in nucleophilic fluorination reactions with alkali metal fluoride is a problem yet to be solved. Herein, two synergistic approaches exploiting hydrogen bonding catalysis are presented. First, we demonstrate that modulating the charge density of fluoride with a hydrogen-bond donor urea catalyst directly influences the kinetic regioselectivity in the fluorination of dissymmetric aziridinium salts with aryl and ester substituents. Moreover, we report a urea-catalyzed formal dyotropic rearrangement, a thermodynamically controlled regiochemical editing process consisting of C–F bond scission followed by fluoride rebound. These findings offer a route to access enantioenriched fluoroamine regioisomers from a single chloroamine precursor, and more generally, new opportunities in regiodivergent asymmetric (bis)urea-based organocatalysis
