    Using modern techniques of dyadic harmonic analysis, we are able to prove sharp estimates for the Bergman projection and Berezin transform and more general operators in weighted Bergman spaces on the unit ball in Cn\mathbb{C}^n.     Visualizing and Understanding Convolutional Networks

    Large Convolutional Network models have recently demonstrated impressive classification performance on the ImageNet benchmark. However there is no clear understanding of why they perform so well, or how they might be improved. In this paper we address both issues. We introduce a novel visualization technique that gives insight into the function of intermediate feature layers and the operation of the classifier. We also perform an ablation study to discover the performance contribution from different model layers. This enables us to find model architectures that outperform Krizhevsky \etal on the ImageNet classification benchmark. We show our ImageNet model generalizes well to other datasets: when the softmax classifier is retrained, it convincingly beats the current state-of-the-art results on Caltech-101 and Caltech-256 datasets

    Electrostatic curved electrode actuators

    This paper presents the design and performance of an electrostatic actuator consisting of a laterally compliant cantilever beam and a fixed curved electrode, both suspended above a ground plane. A theoretical description of the static behavior of the cantilever as it is pulled into contact with the rigid fixed-electrode structure is given. Two models are presented: a simplified semi-analytical model based on energy methods, and fully three-dimensional (3-D) coupled electromechanical numerical simulations using CoSolve-EM. The two models are in qualitative agreement with each other, and predict stable actuator behavior when the beam deflection becomes constrained by the curved electrode geometry before electrostatic pull-in can occur. The pull-in behavior depends on the shape of the curved electrode. Test devices have been fabricated by polysilicon surface micromachining techniques. Experimental results confirm the basic theoretical results. Stable behavior with relatively large displacements and forces can be generated by these curved electrode actuators.     Reconstructed warm season temperatures for Nome, Seward Peninsula, Alaska

    [1] Understanding of past climate variability in the Bering Strait region and adjacent land areas is limited by a paucity of long instrumental and paleoclimatic records. Here we describe a reconstruction of May - August temperatures for Nome, Seward Peninsula, Alaska based on maximum latewood density data which considerably extends the available climatic information. The reconstruction shows warm conditions in the late 1600s and middle-20th century and cooler conditions in the 1800s. The summer of 1783, coinciding with the Laki, Iceland volcanic event, is among the coldest in the reconstruction. Statistically significant relationships with the North Pacific Index and Bering-Chukchi sea surface temperatures indicate that the Seward tree-ring data are potentially useful as long-term indices of atmosphere-ocean variability in the region.</p
